In this study, specimens were prepared which have some defects on the buttweld joint of mild steel. In order to detect the defects of specimens, the following tests were put to : AUT and RT. When the results of the three tests were compared, the conclusion could be brought to as follows. 1) AUT outstrips RT in the abillity to detect plane defects like slags or cracks, but RT excels AUT in the ability to detect spheroidal defects like blowholes. 2) RT detects neither taper cracks nor very closed cracks, whereas AUT detects both of them. 3) AUT can detect at once plane defects like cracks and spheroidal defects like blowholes.
This study has been performed to investigate the stress distribution around defects that behave as stress concentrators. Besides, the effect of stress interaction effects on the initiation of primary cracks were also investigated by rotary bending fatigue tests which were performed with specimens drilled micro surface defects and the stress distribution was analyzed using Finite Element Method. In addition, the stress interaction effects around defects and cracks were investigated by comparing the results of experiments and F.E.M. The results obtained are summarized as follows ; 1) Area which slip and micro cracks initiated at micro surface defects is between the maximum shear stress points and this area is over than ${\pm}30^{\circ}$ from the maximum stress point along the defect edge. 2) The stress interaction effect for the small size defect is larger than that of large size defect when the interval between them is near 3) Interval which there is no shear stress interaction effect analyzed by F.E.M. is larger than that of experimental results.

The shaft with the circular cross section has symmetric structural combination parts to keep the rotating balance. Hence the crack usually initiates from symmetric combination parts due to the stress concentration of these parts. In this study to estimate the fatigue behavior of symmetric cracks, the fatigue test was performed by using a rotary bending tester and the specimen with symmetric defects in circular cross section. The characteristics of crack initiation and propagation on the symmetric surface cracks in circular cross section were examined. We also observed the internal crack using the oxidation coloring method and investigated the fatigue behavior using the relationship between the surface crack and the internal crack. As a result, the fatigue life of symmetric cracks was reduced by 35% compared to that of a single crack. We examined the characteristics of fatigue behavior of elements with symmetric cracks using internal crack propagation rate and maximum stress intensity factor range that were obtained from an approximation method.

If defects are located far apart, fatigue cracks are independently initiated from them and gradually approach other cracks so that the fatigue life becomes influenced by the crack growth behavior of those interacting cracks. In this study, the effect of the stress interaction between defects on the fatigue crack propagation behavior is investigated experimentally and these results are verified by finite element method. In addition, fatigue crack propagation behaviors under micro hole interaction field are studied.

This study has been performed to investigate the stress distribution around defects that behave as stress concentrators and fracture mechanical analysis for cracks initiatiating at stress concentrators. The stress distribution was analyzed using Finite Element Method and non dimensional stress intensity factor was determined by the mean stress method. In addition, stress interaction effects around defects and cracks were compared.

It is commonly required that tubes with defects exceeding $40\%$ of wall thickness in depth should be plugged; however, this criterion is too conservative for some locations and for some types of defects. Many studies have been done with the aim of developing an alternative plugging criteria, and these studies have shown that steam generator tubes with a certain range of axial through-wall cracks could remain in service without any safety or reliability problems. However, these studies have been limited, thus far, to consideration of single cracked tubes, necessitating a study on multiple cracks, which are commonly found. A crack coalescence model applicable to steam generator tubes with two collinear axial through-wall cracks was proposed in the previous study. In this paper, the investigation is extended to the parallel axial cracks spaced in a circumferential direction, because parallel axial cracks are more frequently detected during in-service inspections than collinear axial cracks. Interaction effects between two parallel cracks are evaluated by performing elastic and elastic-plastic finite element analyses.

The metal forming behavior and defect formation in Ti-6Al-4V tube during hot backward extrusion were investigated. To predict the forming-defects such as shear band, inner cracks or surface cracks, dynamic material model(DMM) including Ziegler's instability criterion and modified Cockcroft-Latham fracture criterion(C-L model) were used. These models were coupled to the internal variables generated from FE analysis. The chilling effect and friction indicated a great influence on the deformation mode of the tube and the formation of surface cracks. The simulation results for the backward extrusion were compared with the experimental observations.

Cracks are typical defects that occur in concrete structures. When cracks occur in the structure, durability reduction, concrete neutralization, and steel corrosion cause functional safety problems. In order to prevent such cracks, surface repair method is performed for cracks smaller than 0.3 mm and rechargeable method is performed for cracks larger than 0.3 mm. However, even if it is applied by the surface repair method at less than 0.3 mm, re-leakage cracks continue to occur. Recently, the Supreme Court ruled that the rechargeable method should be applied to cracks less than 0.3mm in order to reduce the occurrence of defects. However, it was considered that the repair fees were too high relative to the observed defect rate, resulting in a necessitation of modifying the existing construction analysis administration standards. This study analyzes the differences in the subjective views on the durability degradation with regards to surface repair methods in concrete structures.

Recently, the use of digital technology in architectural technology is gradually increasing with the development of various industrial technologies. There are artificial intelligence and drones in the field of architecture, and among them, deep learning technology has been introduced to conduct research in areas such as precise inspection of buildings, and it is expressed in a highly reliable way. When a building is deteriorated, various defects such as cracks in the surface and subsidence of the structure may occur. Since these cracks can represent serious structural damage in the future, the detection of cracks was conducted using artificial intelligence that can detect and identify surface defects by detecting cracks and aging of buildings.
Electromechanical properties of REBCO CC tapes are known to be limited by defects (cracks) that form in the brittle REBCO layer. These defects could be inherently acquired during the CC tapes' manufacturing process, such as slitting, and which can be initiated at the CC tapes' edges. If propagated and long enough, they are believed to cause critical current degradation and can substantially decrease the delamination strength of CC tapes. Currently, commercially available CC tapes from various manufacturers utilize different growth techniques for depositing the REBCO layers on the substrates in their CC tapes preparation. Their epitaxial techniques, unfortunately, cannot perfectly avoid the formation of particles, in which sometimes acts as current blocking defects, known as outgrowths. Collective research regarding the composition, size, and formation of these particles for various CC tapes with different deposition techniques are particularly uncommon in a single study. Most importantly, these particles might interact in one way or another to the existing cracks. Therefore, systematic investigation on the interactions between the cracks' development mechanism and particles on the REBCO superconducting layers of practical CC tapes are of great importance, especially in the design of superconducting devices. Here, a proper etching process was employed for the CC tapes to expose and observe the REBCO layers, clearly. The scanning electron microscope, field emission scanning microscope, and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy were utilized to observe the interactions between cracks and particles in various practical CC tapes. Particle compositions were identified whether as non-superconducting or superconducting and in what manner it interacts with the cracks were studied.
