  • In this paper, the ECT(eddy current testing) signal analysis of eddy current array probe for inspection of SG(steam generator) tube in NPP(nuclear power plant) using electromagnetic FEM(finite element method) was performed. To obtain the electromagnetic characteristics of probes, the governing equation was derived from Maxwell's equation, and the problem was solved by using the 3-dimensional FEM. The types of defects were FBH(flat bottomed hole) and OD groove, Spiral groove, natural defects(pitting, SCC, multiple SCC, wear). The depth of FBH defects were 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100 of SG tube thickness, and it was assumed that the defects were located on the tube outside. And the operation frequency of 100kHz, 300kHz and 400kHz were used. Material of specimen was Inconel 600 which is usually used for SG tubes in NPP. The signal difference could be observed according to the variation of size and depth on FBH defects and operation frequencies. The results in this paper can be helpful when the ECT signals from EC array probe are evaluated and analyzed.

  • The aim of this study is an investigation of the interaction of two micro hole defects affecting fatigue crack initation life and propagation behavior. The locatio of two micro hole defects was considered as an angle of alignment and the distance between the centers of two micro hole defects. The fatigue cracking behavior is experimented under bending. When micro defects are located close to each other, the fatigue crack initiation lives are varied with their relative locations. In the experiments, the area of local plastic strain strongly played a role in the fatigue crack initiation lives. Therefore we introduce a parameter which contains the plastic deformation area at stress concentrations and propose a fatigue crack initiation life prediction curve. In addition, the directions and propagation rates of fatigue cracks initiated at two micro hole defects are studied experimentally.

  • Objectives: We have treated people who have color vision defects with oriental medicine; here we demonstrate several representative cases to illustrate the effectiveness of our treatment. Material and methods: We recruited study patients who visited one oriental hospital for color vision defects. We show several representative cases to illustrate the effectiveness of our treatment. The study initially consisted of 178 subjects who took part during a 3-year period. Subjects, all of whom consented to this treatment and trial, were classified by those who have a color vision defect and those who don't by the Ishihara test and another by the Hahn color vision test. We tried color vision correction treatment with acupuncture. Acupuncture therapy where the retina and optic nerves were activated was conducted in parallel with vision correction. Assessment of therapy was conducted at 30 times, 60 times, 90 times, or 120 times of therapy. Results: Assessment of therapy was performed by conducting treatment 30 times, 60 times, 90 times, or 120 times. Surprisingly, all subjects could correctly recognize color after the treatment; although there were case by case differences according to the number of therapy treatments each individual received. Conclusions: Color vision defects can be treated. To enable those with color vision defects to enjoy better quality of life and increased opportunity in color vision-dependent job fields, therapy to correct the problem is a viable option.

  • The formation degree of sustain (ITO pattern) determines the quality of a PDP (Plasma Display Panel). Thus, in the present study, we attempt to detect 100% of the defects that are larger than $30{\mu}m$. Currently, the inspection method in the PDP manufacturing process is dependent upon the naked eye or a microscope in off-line mode. In this study, a prototype inspection system for PDP ITO patterned glass is developed. The developed system, which is based on a line-scan mechanism, obtains information on the defects and sorts the defects by type automatically. The developed inspection system adopts a multi-vision method using slit-beam formation for minimum inspection time and the detection algorithm is embodied in the detection ability. Characteristic defects such as pin holes, substances, and protrusions are extracted using the blob analysis method. Defects such as open, short, spots and others are distinguished by the line type inspection algorithm. It was experimentally verified that the developed inspection system can detect defects with reliability of up to 95% in about 60 seconds for the 42-inch PDP panel.

  • Ultrasonic technique which is one of the most common nondestructive evaluation techniques has been applied to evaluate the integrity of structures by analyzing the characteristic of scattering sign al from internal defects. Therefore, a numerical analysis of ultrasonic scattering field due to defect profiles is absolutely needed for the accurate, quantitative estimation of internal defects. In this paper, the SH-wave scattering by multi-cavity defects and inclusion using Elastodynamic Boundary Element Method is studied. The effects of shape and distance of defects on transmitted and reflected fields are considered. The interaction of multi-cavity defects in SH-wave scattering is also investigated. Numerical calculations by the BEM have been carried out to predict near field solution of scattered fields of ultrasonic SH-wave. The presented results can be used to improve the detection sensitivity and pursue quantitative nondestructive evaluation for inverse problem.

  • The wheelsets are one of most important component: damages in wheel tread and press fitted axle are a significant cost for railway industry. Since failure in railway wheelset can cause a disaster, regular inspection of defects in wheels and axles are mandatory. Ultrasonic testing, acoustic emission and eddy current testing method and so on regularly check railway wheelset in service. However, it is difficult to use this method because of its high viscosity and because its sensitivity is affected by temperature. Also, due to noise echoes it is difficult to detect defects initiation clearly with ultrasonic testing. It is necessary to develop a non-destructive technique that is superior to conventional NDT techniques in order to ensure the safety of railway wheelset. In the present paper, the new NDT technique is applied to the detection of surface defects for railway wheelset. To detect the defects for railway wheelset, the sensor for defect detection is optimized and the tests are carried out with respect to surface and internal defects each other. The results show that the surface crack depth of 1.5 mm in press fitted axle and internal crack in wheel could be detected by using the new method. The ICFPD method is useful to detect the defect that initiated in the tread of railway wheelset.

  • Background Perineal defects are commonly encountered during the treatment of conditions such as malignancy, infectious disease, and trauma. Covering large defects in the perineal area is challenging due to its complicated anatomy and the need for functional preservation. Methods Fourteen patients who underwent reconstructive surgery with multiple perforator flaps for defects >$100cm^2$ in the perineal area were included in this retrospective cohort study. Characteristics of the perforator flap operation and postoperative outcomes were reviewed. Results Reconstruction was performed using 2 perforator flaps for 13 patients and 3 perforator flaps for 1 patient. Internal pudendal artery perforator flaps were mainly used for covering the defects. The average defect size was $176.3{\pm}61.8cm^2$ and the average size of each flap was $95.7{\pm}31.9cm^2$. Six patients had minor complications, such as wound dehiscence and partial necrosis of the flap margin, which were corrected with simple revision procedures. Conclusions Multiple perforator flaps can be used to achieve successful reconstructions of large perineal defects that are difficult to reconstruct with other coverage methods.

  • As the use of advanced quality materials in constructions has been increasing since 1980 with the improvements in the quality of life and economic scale, there has been drastic increase in constructions using stones for the internal and external construction materials. However, the reality is where many problems rise due to improper construction and management of uncertified stones which shorten the expiry date of the stones and act as the factor causing defects in buildings. Such defects not only bring economic losses but also influence consumer choice and act as risk factors to demand expansion of stone market. Therefore, the object of this study lies on proposing plans to prevent personal and economical losses due to repetitive defects by deriving the types of defects generated by process in stone constructions and identify the causes. Also, proposing construction process management plans as the measure for defect prevention, analyzing problems of stone constructions followed by the whole proves of design, construction and maintenance of stones, and solving such problems through appropriate participation of professional consultants depending on situations.

  • Background Adipofascial flaps covered with a skin graft address the challenges involved in reconstructing dorsal foot defects. The purpose of this study was to describe a large adipofascial flap based on the perforators of the dorsalis pedis artery for large foot defects. Methods Twelve patients aged 5-18 years with large soft tissue defects of the dorsal foot due to trauma were treated with an extended dorsalis pedis adipofascial flap from May 2016 to December 2018. The flap was elevated from the non-injured half of the dorsum of the foot. Its length was increased by fascial extension from the medial or lateral foot fascia to the plantar fascia to cover the defect. All perforators of the dorsalis pedis artery were preserved to increase flap viability. The dorsalis pedis artery and its branches were kept intact. Results The right foot was affected in 10 patients, and the left foot in two patients. All flaps survived, providing an adequate contour and durable coverage with a thin flap. Follow-up lasted up to 2 years, and patients were satisfied with the results. They were able to wear shoes. Donor-site morbidity was negligible. Two cases each of partial skin graft loss and superficial necrosis at the tip of the donor cutaneous flap occurred and were healed by a dressing. Conclusions The hinged multiperforator-based extended dorsalis pedis adipofascial flap described herein is a suitable method for reconstructing dorsal foot defects, as it provides optimal functional and aesthetic outcomes with minimal donor site morbidity.

  • This paper is concerned with type of imperfections present within the anodic oxide films on AA2024 and surface hardness of the anodic film measured after ink-impregnation. The anodic oxide films were formed for 25 min at 40 mA/㎠ and 15±0.5℃ and 300 rpm of magnet stirring rate in 20% sulfuric acid solution. The ink-impregnation allows clear observations of not only the imperfections within the anodic oxide films but also an indentation mark on the oxide film surface made by a pyramidal-diamond penetrator for the hardness measurement. There were observed four different regions in the anodic oxide films on AA2024 and the surface hardness of the anodic oxide films appeared to be crucially dependent on the type of defects, showing 60~100 Hv on the oxide surface region I with large size black defect, 100~140 Hv on the oxide surface region II with large size grey defect, 140~170 Hv on the oxide surface region III with mall size black and/or grey defects and 170~190 Hv on the oxide surface region IV without defects. The pyramidal indentation marks were observed to be distorted in the regions with a large size black and grey defects, while no distortion of the indentation mark was observed in the regions with small size defects and without visible defects.
