  • Defect assessment of a weld zone is important in fitness-for-service evaluation of plant components. Typically a J and $C^*$ estimation method for a defective homogeneous component is extended to a mismatched component, by incorporating the effect due to the strength mismatch between the weld metal and the base material. The key element is a mismatch limit load. For instance, the R6/R5 procedure employs an equivalent material concept, defined by a mismatch limit load. A premise is that if a proper mismatch limit load solution is available, the same concept can be used for any defect location (either a weld centre defect or a heat affected zone (HAZ) defect) and for any material combination (either two-material or multi-material combinations; either similar or dissimilar joints). However, validation is still limited, and thus a more systematic investigation is needed to generalise the suggestion to any geometry, any defect location and any material combination. This paper describes the effect of structural geometry on the $C^*$ integral for defective similar welds, based on systematic elastic-creep 2-D and 3-D finite element (FE) analyses, to attempt to elucidate the questions given above. It is found that the existing 'equivalent material' concept is valid only for limited cases, although it provides conservative estimates of $C^*$ for most of cases. A modification to the existing equivalent material concept is suggested to improve accuracy.

  • The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of the porous hydroxyapatite particles (Interpore $200^{(R)}$) and guided tissue regeneration membrane ($Gore-Tex^{TM}$ augmentation material) on amount and shape of generating new bone adjacent to implant. Implants were placed immediately after extraction in the bilateral 3rd, 4th premolars of the mandible of the adult dogs. In all experimental groups, artificial bony defects were formed at the buccal cortex area, 3.3mm in width and 3.0mm in depth. In the control group : sutured without HA particles & membranes after placing implants, the experimental group 1 : membrane was place over the artificial bony defect, the experimental group 2 : bony defect was filled with HA particles and covered with membrane. The examination of bone-implant interfaces using light microscope and fluorescent microscope concluded as follows. 1. In all three experimental groups, osseointegration was observed without epithelial migration. 2. In the healing degree of bony defect area, the experimental group 1, 2 showed more prominent healing than control group, and the experimental group 1 showed the most excellent bone formation. 3. In fluorescent microscopic finding, bone remodeling was observed in regenerated bone tissue at defect area of experimental group 1, but in experimental group 2, irregular, discontinuous linear fluorescence was observed at the lower portion of defect area and sign of bone remodeling was weak.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of i) the extent of peri-implant bone defects and ii) the application of bone cement on implant stability with respect to the measurement direction. Methods: In 10 bovine rib bones, 4 implant osteotomies with peri-implant bone defects of various widths were prepared: i) no defect (D0), ii) a 2-mm-wide defect (D2), iii) a 4-mm-wide defect (D4), and iv) a 8-mm-wide defect (D8). The height of all defects was 10 mm. Implant stability quotient (ISQ) values and Periotest values (PTVs) were measured after implant placement and bone cement application. Results: With increasing defect width, decreased ISQs and increased PTVs were observed. Statistically significant differences were found between groups D0 and D8, D0 and D4, and D2 and D8. Prior to bone cement application, inconsistent PTVs were found in group D8 depending on the measurement direction. Bone cement increased the implant stability. Conclusion: Peri-implant bone deficits measuring around 50% of the implant surface compromised implant stability. Clinically, PTVs should be cautiously interpreted in implants with large peri-implant defects due to inconsistent recordings with respect to the measurement direction.

  • To investigate the turbulence characteristics within the boundary layer over a flat plate, an experimental study was performed using a PIV technique in a circular water channel. For two water velocities, 0.92 and 1.99 m/s, the water velocity profiles were taken and analyzed to determine turbulent characteristics such as the Reynolds stress, Taylor micro-length scale, and Kolmogorov length scale within the defect law region of the boundary layer. These analysis methods may be applied to research on the friction drag reduction technology using micro-bubbles or an air sheet over the surface of a ship's hull, because the physical reason for the friction drag reduction could be found by understanding the variation of the turbulence characteristics and structures in the boundary layer.

  • Forty eight patients diagnosed as atrial septal defect, had been operated from April 1986 to December 1990 at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Inha University Hospital, were analysed retrospectively. Of the 48 patients, 12 patients, were male and 36 patients were female, Their ranged from 8 months to 51 years old, and the mean was 18.0 years old. The proceeding two symptoms were exertional dyspnea and frequent upper respiratory infection. But 10 patients [20.8%] were asymptomatic. Electrocardiographic findings were regular sinus rhythm in 100.0%, RVH in 29.2%, incomplete RBBB in 27.1%, and first degree AV block in 2.1%. Hemodynamic studies were performed in 38 of 48 patients. Significant pulmonary hypertension[over 50mmHg in systolic pulmonary arterial pressure], which is the most serious risk factor, was developed in 4 patients[8.3%]. There was statistical significance between size of defect[cm2/BSA-M2] and systolic pulmonary arterial pressure[sPAP] retrospectively[p=0.036]. We could not find the correlationship between age and Qs % size. Anatomically, secundum type constituted 97.9%, in which 43 patients were PFO type[91.6%] and 3 patients were IVC type[6.3%]. 38 of 48 ASD patients were repaired with patch closure[72.9%] and remains were repaired with direct closure[27.1%]. The operative result was excellent except two cases of transient postoperative arrhythmia. There was no operative mortality.

  • DBPAS has been used to characterize atomic size defect structures in materials. In this investigation the numerical analysis of the Doppler spectra was employed to the determination of the shape parameter, S, defined as the ratio between the amount of counts in a central portion of the spectrum and the total counts of whole spectrum. As the samples were exposed by X-ray increasing the exposed doses from 3, 6, and 9 Gy with 6 MV and 15 MV, respectively and also irradiated by X-ray as the medical applications used for in 0, 2, 4 and 6 years. The S-parameter values were increased as increasing the exposed time and the energies, that indicated the defects generate more. The S-parameters of the samples with medical treatment is varied from 0.4932 to 0.4956.

  • This study analyzed the cause and liability of a car fire. The car was purchased 1 year ago and had traveled 8,500 km. When the car stopped at a red right and was about to start when the light turned green, the car next to it sounded itsa horn. As a result, the driver stopped the car and found that there was a fire in the engine compartment, which the fire brigade subsequently extinguished. This car fire may have been caused by an electrical spark from a screw hook inserted into the battery + terminal. Therefore, the courts decided that the car owner or driver was not responsible for the fire, because the electrical spark from the hook that caused it resulted from the automaker's manufacturing defect.

  • DBPAS has been used to characterize atomic level defect structures in materials. In this investigation the numerical analysis of the Doppler spectra was restricted to the determination of the shape parameter, S, defined as the ratio between the total amount of counts in a central portion of the spectrum and the total amount of counts. As samples were exposed by X-ray increasing from 3, 6, and 9 Gy with 6 MV, and 10 MV each and also by E-beam increasing the energies with 6 MeV, 9 MeV, 12 MeV, and 20 MeV. The S-parameter values were increased as increasing the exposed time and the energies. The S-parameters of the large and small size grains in $CaWO_4$ were measured. The S-parameter of the small size grains in $CaWO_4$ was resulted in larger values.

  • In this study, numerical investigation has been performed on the impingement, spreading and solidification of a coating material droplet impacting onto a solid substrate in the thermal spray process. The numerical model is validated through the comparison of the present numerical result with experimental data fer the flat substrate without surface defects. An analysis of deposition formation on the non-polished substrate with surface defects is also performed. The parametric study is conducted with various surface defect sizes and shapes to examine the effect of surface defects on the impact and solidification of the liquid droplet on the substrate.

  • The relationship between the EFBH (Equivalent Flat-Bottom Hole) size measured by non-destructive method and the actual size by destructive method in many rotors manufactured at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd. was investigated. In this investigation. "the Master Curve" compensating the differences between UT reported sizes and actual sizes of defects in our rotor forgings were obtainable. The applicability of this "Master Curve" as a way of calculating the actual defect size was also investigated. For the evaluation of rotor forgings, it is expected that this "Master Curve" may be used to determine the accurate actual sizes of defects.
