The G-class cement is commonly used in practice for geothermal well cementing in order to protect a steel casing that is designed to transport hot water/steam from deep subsurface to ground surface during operating a geothermal power plant. In order to maintain optimal performance of geothermal wells, physical properties of the cementing material should be satisfactory. In this paper, relevant factors (i.e., groutability, uniaxial compression strength, thermal conductivity and free fluid content) of the G-class cement were experimentally examined with consideration of various water-cement (w/c) ratios. Important findings through the experiments herein are as follows. (1) Groutability of the G-class cement increases by adding a small dose of retarder. (2) There would be a structural defect caused when the w/c ratio is kept higher in order to secure groutability. (3) Thermal conductivity of the G-class cement is small enough to prevent heat loss from hot steam or water to the outer ground formation during generating electricity. (4) The G-class cement does not form free water channel in cementing a geothermal well. (5) The Phenolphthalein indicator is applicable to the distinction of the G-class cement from the drilling mud.
An earth tube soil air heat exchange system was designed, installed and operated as a single pass heat exchanger to utilize the geothermal energy as an natural energy source. This study was undertaken to investigate the potential of the heating and cooling, energy gain, heat exchange efficiency and coefficient of performance of the system. The system consisted of 30m in length and 30cm in diameter polyethylene pipes buried 2m deep in soil. Maximum heating and cooling performance were 2.51㎾ and 1.26㎾ at the air mass rate of 21cmm. Energy gain and coefficient of performance were the function of temperature difference between outside air and soil temperature. They were expressed as Q=0.33$ imes$$Delta T_{max}$+0.134(㎾) for energy gain and COP=0.44$ imes$$Delta T_{max}$+0.178 for coefficient of performance with correlation factor of 0.95. The mean of heat exchange efficiencies was 85.6%.
The low velocity body was detected during the invesfigation of the crustal structune and upper mantle in the Korean Peninsula using ray method and observational seismic data. We observed the arrival time delays of P and S waves that pass through the Bugok hot spring area and the chugaryong rift zone in the Korean Peninsula. The present geothermal exploration accounts for the high heat flow in these regions, suggesting that the area are the 'delay shadows' produced by a deep, low velocity body(Resenberg et aL, 1980). We tried to verify the hypothesis that the low-velocity body is caused by the partial melting in the lower crust can be explained by the lateral variation(inhomogeneous model) of the lower crust velocity using Ray Method(Cerveny and Psencik, 1983).

The Performance of U-tube ground heat exchanger for geothermal heat Pump systems depends on the thermal properties of the soil, as well as grout or backfill materials in the borehole. In-situ tests provide a means of estimating some of these properties. In this study, in-situ thermal response tests were completed on two vertical boreholes, 130 m deep with 62 mm diameter high density polyethylene U-tubes. The tests were conducted by adding a monitored amount of heat to water over a $17\~18$ hour period for each vertical boreholes. By monitoring the water temperatures entering and exiting the loop and heat load, overall thermal conductivity values of grout/soil formation were determined. Two parameter estimation models for evaluation of thermal response test data were compared when applied on the same temperature response data. One model is based on line-source theory and the other is a numerical one-dimensional finite difference model. The average thermal conductivity deviation between measured data and these models is of the magnitude $1\%$ to $5\%$.

Electrical and electromagnetic methods were widely applied to survey of civil engineering, environment site assessments and maintenance of underground structures in Korea. Electro-physical properties measurements of soil and rock are necessary in order to quantitatively estimate the ground from these survey results. A few geotechnical researcher groups have been simplified measurement system of the electro-physical properties, which was intermittently operating by the necessity. Recent strong concern about $CO_2$ underground storage and development of gas hydrate projects have urged many advanced countries. The electro-physical properties estimation of the deep object stratum is very importance for basic information of these research. So, advanced countries have a high-end measurement system with high temperature(200 degrees) and pressure(300 MPa), also they have been a lot of experience and know-how on the electro-physical properties measurement.
By the analysis of discontinuity at the outcrop and lineament on the satellite image, the joints have deeply relationship with the lineaments. The joint spaces at the drilling core are mostly 1~20 cm but at the rhyolite which is distributed near fault they have more closely. These volcanic rocks belong to the subalkaline series tuff, rhyolite, basalt in the study area from the diagram of $Nb/Y-Zr/TiO_2$. The composition diagram of Hf/3-Th-Nb/16 show destructive plate-margin basalt and their differentiates. The environment of formation of volcanics are normal continental arc. Most of LREE show high enriched pattern but HREE show depleted pattern. The K/Ar age of intermediate volcanics, tuff, rhyolite, crystal tuff are 55.3Ma, 77.25 Ma~91.22Ma, 63.16~64.39Ma, 54.49 Ma respectively.
Deep drilling project should be managed systematically and efficiently because it is significantly influenced by various related factors having uncertainty and high risk in terms of economy and effective management. In particular, drilling project involves participants from various sectors including necessary service company and it also needs their collaboration by sharing related information occurring at drilling process in order to secure efficient performance management. We developed 4D (3D + time) information based visualization system for progress management by combining 3D design model and predicted optimized control parameters for each section in geothermal well design. We also applied PDM (precedence diagramming method) to the system in order to setup the effective process model and hooked it up to 3D information based on precedence relation and required time for informatized process network.
The failure mechanism of a deep hard rock tunnel under high geostress and high geothermalactivity is extremely complex. Uniaxial compression tests of granite at different temperatures were conducted. The complete stress-strain curves, mechanical parameters and macroscopic failure types of the rock were analyzed in detail. The brittleness index, which represents the possibility of a severe brittleness hazard, is proposed in this paperby comparing the peak stress and the expansion stress. The results show that the temperature range from 20 to $60^{\circ}C$ is able to aggravate the brittle failure of hard rock based on the brittleness index. The closure of internal micro cracks by thermal stress can improve the strength of hard rock and the storage capacity of elastic strain energy. The failure mode ofthe samples changes from shear failure to tensile failure as the temperature increases. In conclusion, the brittle failure mechanism of hard rock under the action of thermal coupling is revealed, and the analysis result offers significant guidance for deep buried tunnels at high temperatures and under high geostress.
This numerical study investigates seismicity and fault slip induced by fluid injection in deep geothermal reservoir with pre-existing fractures and fault. Particle Flow Code 2D is used with additionally implemented hydro-mechanical coupled fluid flow algorithm and acoustic emission moment tensor inversion algorithm. The output of the model includes spatio-temporal evolution of induced seismicity (hypocenter locations and magnitudes) and fault deformation (failure and slip) in relation to fluid pressure distribution. The model is applied to a case of fluid injection with constant rates changing in three steps using different fluid characters, i.e. the viscosity, and different injection locations. In fractured reservoir, spatio-temporal distribution of the induced seismicity differs significantly depending on the viscosity of the fracturing fluid. In a fractured reservoir, injection of low viscosity fluid results in larger volume of induced seismicity cloud as the fluid can migrate easily to the reservoir and cause large number and magnitude of induced seismicity in the post-shut-in period. In a faulted reservoir, fault deformation (co-seismic failure and aseismic slip) can occur by a small perturbation of fracturing fluid (<0.1 MPa) can be induced when the injection location is set close to the fault. The presented numerical model technique can practically be used in geothermal industry to predict the induced seismicity pattern and magnitude distribution resulting from hydraulic stimulation of geothermal reservoirs prior to actual injection operation.
Attention has been focused on geothermal energy as an alternative energy because it is continuously operable without external supply. Most of geothermal anomalies in Korea are related to deep circulation of groundwater through a fracture system in granite area. Therefore it is very important to understand the distribution of the fracture system which is the main channel of ground water. In this research, we constructed the velocity models with a fracture system and the layered sediments, respectively, and generated synthetic data sets with them to verify the presented vertical seismic profiling (VSP) preprocessing scheme. We compared the results from conventional VSP preprocessing flow to those from VSP preprocessing flow considering fracture system. We noticed that the preprocessing flow considering fracture system retains more sufficient signal including down-going wave than conventional preprocessing. In addition, we applied 3D VSP prestack phase screen migration to the preprocessed reversed VSP (RVSP) data from Seokmo Island so that we were able to image fracture structure of the geothermal site in Seokmo Island.
