  • We develop a real-time data transfer system for the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) photometry data and test whether it is suitable for Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) and three different observatories, which are Cerro Tololo Inter-Ameriacan Observatory (CTIO) in Chile, Siding Springs Observatory (SSO) in Australia, and South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in South Africa. For this test, we use a high speed global network being dedicated for researches. From the test, we obtain that the elapsed times between KASI and each three observatories, CTIO, SSO, and SAAO to transfer 650 MB of data are 99.0, 9.2, 119.0 seconds, respectively. This means that the system can be used for the real-time data processing of KMTNet.

  • This paper presents fractional frequency reuse (FFR) with sub-channel borrowing to improve spectral efficiency of the wireless broadband (WiBro) system. FFR has constraints on usable sub-channels to balance the interference and cell capacity. Our FFR with sub-channel borrowing allows use of the dedicated sub-channels assigned to neighboring cells. Simulation results show that the proposed FFR with sub-channel borrowing improves the performance of the WiBro system.

  • This paper describes a post-layout simulation method using VHDL and C for verifying the architecture of antifuse-based FPGAs and the dedicated CAD system. An antifuse-based FPGA consists of programming circuitry including decoding logic, logic modules, segmented tracks, antifuses and I/O pads. The VHDL model which includes all these elements is used for logic verification and programming verification of the implemented circuit by reconstructing the logic circuit from the bit-stream generated from layout tool. The implemented circuit comprises of logic modules and routing networks. Since the routing delay of the complex networks is comparable to the delay of the logic module in the FPGA, the accurate post-layout simulation is essential to the FPGA system. In this paper, the C program calculates the delay of the routing netowrks using SPICE, elmore or horowitz delay models and the results feedback to the VHDL simulation. Critical path anc be found from this post-layout simulation results.

  • An alternative human interface enabling people with severe motor disabilities to control an assistive system is presented. Since this interface relies on the biosignals originating from the contraction of muscles on the face during particular movements, even individuals with a paralyzed limb can use it with ease. For real-world application, a dedicated hardware module employing a general-purpose digital signal processor was implemented and its validity tested on an electrically powered wheelchair. Furthermore, an additional attempt to reduce error rates to a minimum for stable operation was also made based on the entropy information inherent in the signals during the classification phase. In the experiments, most of the five participating subjects could control the target system at their own will, and thus it is found that the proposed interface can be considered a potential alternative for the interaction of the severely disabled with electronic systems.

  • A general purpose program NUFLEX for the analysis of 3-D heat/fluid flow in complex geometry with pre/post processor have been developed, which consists of a flow solver based on FVM and a dedicated pre/post processor. The program employs a general non-orthogonal grid system and solve laminar and turbulent (lows with standard and RNG $\kappa-\epsilon$ turbulence models. NUFLEX is capable of analysing two-phase flow with topologically complex interface, turbulent diffusion combustion, solidification problems and magnetic flow. For the purpose of verification of the program and testing the applicability, several practical problems are solved and compared with the available data. Comparison of the NUFLEX results with that by the STAR-CD program has been also made for the same flow configuration and grid structure.

  • Increasing demands on the safety of public train services have led to the development of various types of security monitoring systems. Most of the surveillance systems are focused on the estimation of crowd level in the platform, thereby yielding too many false alarms. In this paper, we present a novel security monitoring system to detect critically dangerous situations such as when a passenger falls from the station platform, or when a passenger walks on the rail tracks. The method is composed of two stages of detecting dangerous situations. Objects falling over to the dangerous zone are detected by motion tracking. 3D depth information retrieved by the stereo vision is used to confirm fallen events. Experimental results show that virtually no error of either false positive or false negative is found while providing highly reliable detection performance. Since stereo matching is performed on a local image only when potentially dangerous situations are found; real-time operation is feasible without using dedicated hardware.

  • This paper is a proposal of Sentinel Asia for Environment (SAFE). The essential to this project is to help environmental agencies in Asia to set up an environmental monitoring system with satellite observation data. It is focused on an environmental issues originated from anthropogenic events detected as land cover and land use change in Asians' daily human life including; agriculture, global warming gas, urban environment and forest resources. It is leaded by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) along with University of Tokyo and Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand under the umbrella of Sentinel Asia which is dedicated to disaster monitoring issues. It is expected to initiate a information outgoing through WWW for Asian countries to set up their national land information system focusing on environmental changes.

  • A bi-modal tram can travel in not only dedicated way but also road so as to reduce construction costs and increase vehicle operation efficiency, whose passenger capacity is 2,500 to 7,000 persons/direction/hour. A bi-modal has an electronic guidance system that knows the location and route of the vehicle, and uses magnetic markers in the road surface for reference. Since a bi-modal tram will be operated in the downtown area, there is some possibility that strong wind occurred between high-rise buildings can produce sudden lateral movement (displacement) of the vehicle to influence its automatic operation controlled by electronic guidance system. For bi-modal tram in the automatic operation mode, lateral movements occurred by strong wind were calculated and analyzed in the dynamic model developed by using the ADAMS. Some useful relations among vehicle speeds, wind speeds, and lateral behaviors were discussed in this paper.

  • Five-axis laser cutting has great advantages when it is applied to 3-dimensional machining requiring high cutting quality. For developing 5-axis CNC laser cutting systems, however, many problems such as rotating a laser head or a working table, 5-axis servo-control mechanism, tool path generation and post processing, and collision avoidance between a laser head and a work-piece should be solved. In this paper, we deal with developing a dedicated CAM system based on UG-NX3 for 5-axis laser cutting machine. Two essential modules such as post-processor and cutting motion simulation was developed. The developed system was applied to cutting curve defined on 3-D workpiece in order to show the validity of the proposed methods.
