  • The first Space-VLBI project, VSOP, started successfully with the launch of the dedicated space-VLBI satellite HALCA in 1997. The project has been in scientific operation in the 1.6 GHz and 5 GHz bands, and studies have been done mainly of the jet phenomena related to active galactic nuclei. A second generation space- VLBI project, VSOP-2, has been planned by the working group formed at ISAS/JAXA with many collaborators. The spacecraft is planned to observe in the 8, 22 and 43 GHz bands with cooled receivers for the two higher bands, and with a maximum angular resolution at 43 GHz (7 mm) of about 40 micro-arcseconds. The VSOP-2 satellite will also have the capability of the phase-reference and full polarization observations, which will produce more powerful results than those of the VSOP project. Far-future space-VLBI projects following VSOP and VSOP-2, have a large potential to achieve enough resolution and sensitivity to satisfy astronomers in future.

  • This paper reviews the legacy of the SPCIA Coronagraph Instrument (SCI) of which the primary scientific objective is the characterization of Jovian exoplanets by coronagraphic spectroscopy in the infrared. Studies on binary shaped pupil mask coronagraphs are described. Cryogenic active optics is discussed as another key technology. Then approaches to observing habitable zones in exoplanetary systems with a passively-cooled space infrared telescope are discussed. The SCI was dropped in a drastic change of the SPICA mission. However, its legacy is useful for space-borne infrared telescopes dedicated for use in exoplanetary science in the future, especially for studies of biomarkers.

  • For the Designing a Dedicated Outdoor Air System with Ceiling Radiant Cooling Panels the concept of a dedicated outdoor air system(DOAS) with parallel sensible cooling was born from the decoupled system concept, which can be summarized as decoupling of ventilation and air-conditioning functions, or decoupling of sensible and latent load functions. First , remove the latent loads from the outside air(OA) intake and generated in spaces using a 100% OA ventilation system(i.e., DOAS). Second, remove the space sensible loads using a parallel mechanical cooling system, such as fan coil units, conventional variable air volume , and ceiling radiant cooling panel(CRCP) independent of the ventilation system.

  • In this paper, we address a layout design problem for determining a K-class-based dedicated storage layout in an automated storage retrieval system. K-class-based dedicated storage employs K zones in which lots from a class of products are stored randomly. Zones form a partition of storage locations. Our objective function is to minimize the expected single command travel time, which is expressed as a set function of space requirements for zones, average demand rates from classes, and one-way travel times from the pickup/deposit station to locations. We construct a heuristic algorithm based on analytical results and a local search method, the methodology deveolped can be used with easily-available data by warehouse planners to improve the throughput capacity of a conventional warehouse as well as an AS/RS.

  • This article is dedicated to my colleague and friend Professor Soon-Kil Hong, Ph.D, who is the famous President of the Korean Association of Air and Space Law and distinguished teacher at the prestigious Hankuk Aviation University. I had the honour and pleasure to teach there a few years ago - upon his gracious invitation. Professor Soon-Kil Hong has made a long, outstanding and impressive career in aviation and space activities, both from a practitioners and academic perspective. That is why I have tried to find a subject which addresses these facets of his personality although this humble article cannot do justice to the great merits of Professor Soon-Kil Hong. This article discusses the liability aspects for damages and injuries to passengers on suborbital flights, by examining: 1. Recent developments regarding space tourism 2. Suborbital flights in relation to the Chicago Convention 3. The application of space law treaties to space tourism 4. Potential candidates for liability regimes applying to space tourism 4.1 Introduction 4.2 Liability under international space law 4.2.1 The Outer Space Treaty (1969) 4.2.2 The Liability Convention (1972) 4.2.3 Conclusions 4.3 Liability under international private air law 4.3.1 Introduction 4.3.2 The Warsaw Convention (1929), as variously amended 4.3.3 The Montreal Agreement (1999) 4.3.4 Conclusions 5. • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristic of common space of public schools in New York City and how the common space can perform a decisive role in enriching public space not as simply connecting between programs but as common space for a wide range of uses for communities as well as students. This study illustrates with a general design guideline of SCA(School of Construction Authority) and how the rules help the common space as an interactive link between community and site/site and school building/building and outdoor space/outdoor space and lobby in the urban context. Since its founding in New York City, 1958, Mitchell/Giurgola Architects office has dedicated itself to working with institutions and public and private schools for 50 years and has been working with SCA for 10 public schools since 1990. Through five school examples by Mitchell Giurgola architects, the study describes how the office suggests public "place" interweaving inner public space and outer public space through lobbies. A result of this research can be proposed what improvements should be made on common space in domestic schools by analyzing of positive aspects of SCA schools.

  • We develop a real-time data transfer system for the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) photometry data and test whether it is suitable for Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) and three different observatories, which are Cerro Tololo Inter-Ameriacan Observatory (CTIO) in Chile, Siding Springs Observatory (SSO) in Australia, and South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in South Africa. For this test, we use a high speed global network being dedicated for researches. From the test, we obtain that the elapsed times between KASI and each three observatories, CTIO, SSO, and SAAO to transfer 650 MB of data are 99.0, 9.2, 119.0 seconds, respectively. This means that the system can be used for the real-time data processing of KMTNet.

  • K-SIM (KASI-Simulation) research project is dedicated to develop new numerical techniques in order to theoretically study galaxy formation and evolution. As the first step of the K-SIM, to model tidal stripping of galaxies with a very high resolution in a fully cosmological context, we invented the Galaxy Replacement Technique (GRT) that is very efficient and fast. The high resolution allows us to accurately resolve the tidal stripping process and well describe the formation of ultra-low surface brightness features in the galaxy cluster (㎶ < 32 mag/arcsec^2), such as the intra-cluster light, shells and tidal streams. I'll introduce how the GRT is designed and which science topics in low-surface brightness regime can be visited using the GRT.
