  • The surveillance robot has been an important component in the field of service robot industry. In the surveillance robot technology, one of the most important technology is to identify a person. In this paper, we propose a gait recognition method based on contourlet and fuzzy LDA (Linear Discriminant Analysis) for surveillance robots. After decomposing a gait image into directional subband images by contourlet, features are obtained in each subband by the fuzzy LDA. The final gait recognition is performed by a fusion technique that effectively combines similarities calculated respectively in each local subband. To show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, various experiments are performed for CBNU and NLPR DB datasets. From these, we obtained better classification rates in comparison with the result produced by previous methods.

  • In a general variance component model, nonnegative quadratic estimators of the components of variance are considered which are invariant with respect to mean value translaion and have minimum bias (analogously to estimation theory of mean value parameters). Here the minimum is taken over an appropriate cone of positive semidefinite matrices, after having made a reduction by invariance. Among these estimators, which always exist the one of minimum norm is characterized. This characterization is achieved by systems of necessary and sufficient condition, and by a cone restricted pseudoinverse. In models where the decomposing covariance matrices span a commutative quadratic subspace, a representation of the considered estimator is derived that requires merely to solve an ordinary convex quadratic optimization problem. As an example, we present the two way nested classification random model. An unbiased estimator is derived for the mean squared error of any unbiased or biased estimator that is expressible as a linear combination of independent sums of squares. Further, it is shown that, for the classical balanced variance component models, this estimator is the best invariant unbiased estimator, for the variance of the ANOVA estimator and for the mean squared error of the nonnegative minimum biased estimator. As an example, the balanced two way nested classification model with ramdom effects if considered.

  • A three-dimensional constitutive modeling for reinforced concrete is presented for finite element nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete. The targets of interest to the authors are columns confined by lateral steel hoops, RC thin shells subjected to combined in-plane and out-of-plane actions and massive structures of three-dimensional (3D) extent in shear. The elasto-plastic and continuum fracture law is applied to pre-cracked solid concrete. For post cracking formulation, fixed multi-directional smeared crack model is adopted for RC domains of 3D geometry subjected to monotonic and reversed cyclic actions. The authors propose a new scheme of decomposing stress strain fields into sub-planes on which 2D constitutive laws can be applied. The proposed model for 3D reinforced concrete is experimentally verified in both member and structural levels under cyclic actions.

  • Azo dyes containing effluents from different industries pose threats to the environment. Though there are physico-chemical methods to treat such effluents, bioremediation is considered to be the best eco-compatible technique. In this communication, we discuss the decolorization potentiality of five azo dyes by Podoscypha elegans (G. Mey.) Pat., a macro-fungus, found growing on the leaf-litter layer of Bethuadahari Wildlife Sanctuary in West Bengal, India. The fungus exhibited high laccase and very low manganese peroxidase activities under different culture conditions. Decolorization of five high-molecular weight azo dyes, viz., Orange G, Congo Red, Direct Blue 15, Rose Bengal and Direct Yellow 27 by the fungus was found to be positive in all cases. Maximum and minimum mean decolorization percentages were recorded in Rose Bengal (70.41%) and Direct Blue 15 (24.8%), respectively. This is the first record of lignolytic study and dye decolorization by P. elegans.

  • The bacterial motility in sand was studied with Alcaligenes xylosoxidans Y234 which is known as a strong decomposer of aromatic chemicals, especially toluene. Apparent motility coefficient (${\mu}$c,app) and apparent chemotaxis coefficient (${\mu}$c,app) for toluene were measured in the sands which have four different porosities. Adsorption ratio of Alcaligenes xylosoxidans Y234 on the sands was measured as 17%. The ramdom motility coefficients were 0.85∼1.68${\times}$10-3$\textrm{cm}^2$/sec, and decreased as the porosity of sands decreased. Apparent chemotaxis coefficients were measured as 1.1∼6.8${\times}$10-5$\textrm{cm}^2$/sec, and decreased as the porosity decreased and with time. The tendency of alcaligenes xylosoxidans Y234 movement towards toluene seemed very weak and showed little chemotaxis.

  • By introducing the notion of constraint-oriented fuzzy inference, we will show that it provides us ways of fuzzy control methods that has abilities of adaptation, learning and self-organization. The basic supporting techniques behind these abilities are“hard”processing by Artificial Intelligence or traditional computational framework and“soft”processing by Neural Network or Genetic Algorithm techniques. The reason that these techniques can be incorporated to fuzzy control systems is that the notion of“constraint”itself has two fundamental properties, that is, the“modularity”property due to its declarativeness and the“logicality”property due to its two-valuedness. From the former property, the modularity property, decomposing and integrating constraints can be done easily and efficiently, which enables us to carry out the above“soft”processing. From the latter property, the logicality property, Qualitative Reasoning and Instance Generalization by Symbolic Reasoning an be carried out, thus enabling the“hard”processing.

  • This paper describes fabrication of a micro cell counter integrated with an oxygen micropump and counting experiment with Sephadex G-25 beads ($70{\sim}100\;{\mu}m$). The pumping part consisted of a microheater, catalyst (manganese dioxide) enveloped with paraffin, hydrogen peroxide, and microchannel, and the counting part consisted of collimated light, a microwindow, and a phototransistor including an external circuit. The micropump generated oxygen gas by decomposing hydrogen peroxide with manganese dioxide, which was initiated by melting the paraffin with the microheater, and pumped beads in the microchannel. When the beads passed the microwindow, they shaded the collimated light and changed the illumination on the phototransistor, which caused the current variation in the circuit. The signals, according to the bead size, reached up to 22 mV with noise level of 2 mV during 50 seconds and the numbers of peaks were analyzed by magnitude.

  • This paper describes an a, pp.oach to recognizing composite features of prismatic parts. AAG (Attribute Adjacency Graph) is adopted as the basis of describing basic feature, but it is extended to enhance the expressive power of AAG by adding face type, angles between faces and normal vectors. Our a, pp.oach is called Extended AAG (EAAG). To simplify the recognition procedure, feature classification tree is built using the graph types of EEA and the number of EAD's. Algorithms to find open faces and dimensions of features are exemplified and used in decomposing composite feature. The processing sequence of recognized features is automatically determined during the decomposition process of composite features.
