  • A decode-and-forward two-way relay system benefits from orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and relay transmission. In this paper, we consider a decode-and-forward two-way relay system over OFDMwith two strategies: A joint subcarrier matching algorithm and a power allocation algorithm operating with a total power constraint for all subcarriers. The two strategies are studied based on average capacity using numerical analysis by uniformly allocating power constraints for each subcarrier matching group. An optimal subcarrier matching algorithm is proposed to match subcarriers in order of channel power gain for both transmission sides. Power allocation is defined based on equally distributing the capacity of each hop in each matching group. Afterward, a modified water-filling algorithm is also considered to allocate the power among all matching groups in order to increase the overall capacity of the network. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations are completed to confirm the numerical results and show the advantages of the joint subcarrier matching, power allocation and water filling algorithms, respectively.

  • A decode-and-forward system with an energy-harvesting relay is analyzed for the case when an arbitrary number of independent interference signals affect the communication at both the relay and the destination nodes. The scenario in which the relay harvests energy from both the source and interference signals using a time switching scheme is analyzed. The analysis is performed for the interference-limited Nakagami-m fading environment, assuming a realistic nonlinearity for the electronic devices. The closed-form outage probability expression for the system with a nonlinear energy harvester is derived. An asymptotic expression valid for the case of a simpler linear harvesting model is also provided. The derived analytical results are corroborated by an independent simulation model. The impacts of the saturation threshold power, the energy-harvesting ratio, and the number and power of the interference signals on the system performance are analyzed.

  • In dual-hop relaying systems, the conventional partial relay selection is based on the channel information only for the first hop. On the other hand, the efficient partial relay selection is based on the channel information for the hop with the minimum of the average channel powers for the first and second hops at each end-to-end link since the correlation coefficient between the end-to-end link quality and the link quality of the hop with the minimum of the average channel powers for the first and second hops is larger than that between the end-to-end link quality and the link quality of the other hop. In this paper, the outage probability of the conventional partial relay selection and the efficient partial relay selection in dual-hop decode-and-forward relaying systems is analyzed for non-identically distributed Rayleigh fading channels. Through numerical investigation, the outage performance of the efficient partial relay selection is compared with the outage performances of the conventional partial relay selection and the best relay selection based on all the channel information for the first and second hops.

  • In this paper, we perform interference cancellation in multiuser MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) relay network with improved Amplify-and-Forward (AF) and Decode-and-Forward (DF) relay protocols. The work of interference cancellation is followed by evolved NodeB (eNB), Relay Node (RN) and User Equipment (UE) to improve the error performance of whole transmission system with the explicit use of relay node. In order to perform interference cancellation, we use Dirty Paper Coding (DPC) and Thomilson Harashima Precoding (THP) allied with detection techniques Zero Forcing (ZF), Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE), Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) and Ordered Successive Interference Cancellation (OSIC). These basic techniques are studied and improved in the proposal by using the functions of relay node. The performance is improved by Decode-and-Forward which enhance the cancellation of interference in two layers at the cooperative relay node. The interference cancellation using weighted vectors is performed between eNB and RN. In the final results of the research, we conclude that in contrast with the conventional algorithms, the proposed algorithm shows better performance in lower SNR regime. The simulation results show the considerable improvement in the bit error performance by the proposed scheme in the LTE-Advanced system.

  • In this paper, we analyze the secrecy performance of single-input multiple-output (SIMO) relay systems over κ-μ shadowed fading channels. Based on considering relay model employing decode-and-forward (DF) protocol, two security evaluation metrics, namely, secure outage probability (SOP) and probability of strictly positive secrecy capacity (SPSC) are studied, for which closed-form analytical expressions are derived. In addition, Monte Carlo results prove the validity of the theoretical derivation. The simulation results confirm that the factors that enhance the security include large ratio of (μD, μE), (mD, mE), (LD, LE) and small ratio of (kD, kE) under the high signal-to-noise ratio regime.

  • This paper considers a cellular two-way relay network with one base station (BS), one relay station (RS), and two users. The two users are far from the BS and no direct links exist, and the two users exchange messages with the BS via the RS. A non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and network coding (NC)-based decode-and-forward (DF) two-way relaying (TWR) scheme TWR-NOMA-NC is proposed, which is able to reduce the number of channel-uses to three from four in conventional time-division multiple access (TDMA) based TWR approaches. The achievable sum-rate performance of the proposed approach is analyzed, and a closed-form expression for the sum-rate upper bound is derived. Numerical results show that the analytical sum-rate upper bound is tight, and the proposed TWR-NOMA-NC scheme significantly outperforms the TDMA-based TWR and NOMA-based one-way relaying counterparts.

  • Cooperative hybrid-automatic repeat request (HARQ) protocols, which can exploit the spatial and temporal diversities, have been widely studied. The efficiency of cooperative HARQ protocols is higher than that of cooperative protocols because retransmissions are only performed when necessary. We classify cooperative HARQ protocols as three decode-and-forward-based HARQ (DF-HARQ) protocols and two amplified-and-forward-based HARQ (AF-HARQ) protocols. To compare these protocols and obtain the optimum parameters, two unified frameworks are developed for protocol analysis. Using the frameworks, we can evaluate and compare the maximum throughput and outage probabilities according to the SNR, the relay location, and the delay constraint. From the analysis we can see that the maximum achievable throughput of the DF-HARQ protocols can be much greater than that of the AF-HARQ protocols due to the incremental redundancy transmission at the relay.

  • Using decode-and-forward relaying in the cognitive radio networks, the spectrum efficiency can improve furthermore. The optimization algorithm of the spectrum sensing estimation time is presented for the cognitive relay networks in this paper. The longer sensing time will bring two aspects of the consequences. On the one hand, the channel parameters are estimated more accurate so as to reduce the interferences to the authorized users and to improve the throughput of the cognitive users. On the other hand, it shortens the transmission time so as to decease the system throughput. In this time, it exists an optimal sensing time to maximize the throughput. The channel state information of the sub-bands is considered as the exponentially distributed, so a stochastic programming method is proposed to optimize the sensing time for the cognitive relay networks. The computer simulation results using the Matlab software show that the algorithm is effective, which has a certain engineering application value.

  • The conventional best relay selection based on all the channel information for the first and second hops in dual-hop systems has a large consumption of resources for channel feedback. In this paper, we analyze the average bit error rate for partial relay selection based on the channel information only for the first hop in dual-hop decode-and-forward relaying systems, where we assume independent Rayleigh fading channels. In particular, we provide an exact and closed-form expression for the average bit error rate of M-ary QAM. Also, through numerical investigation, the performance of the partial relay selection is compared with the performance of the best relay selection, and the performance is evaluated for different numbers of relays and various average channel power ratios for the first and second hops.

  • In this paper, we propose a two-way relaying scheme using non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technology. In this scheme, two sources transmit packets with each other under the assistance of the decode-and-forward (DF) relays, called as a TWDFNOMA protocol. The cooperative relays exploit successive interference cancellation (SIC) technique to decode sequentially the data packets from received summation signals, and then use the digital network coding (DNC) technique to encrypt received data from two sources. A max-min criterion of end-to-end signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) is used to select a best relay in the proposed TWDFNOMA protocol. Outage probabilities are analyzed to achieve exact closed-form expressions and then, the system performance of the proposed TWDFNOMA protocol is evaluated by these probabilities. Simulation and analysis results discover that the system performance of the proposed TWDFNOMA protocol is improved when compared with a conventional three-timeslot two-way relaying scheme using DNC (denoted as a TWDNC protocol), a four-timeslot two-way relaying scheme without using DNC (denoted as a TWNDNC protocol) and a two-timeslot two-way relaying scheme with amplify-and-forward operations (denoted as a TWANC protocol). Particularly, the proposed TWDFNOMA protocol achieves best performances at two optimal locations of the best relay whereas the midpoint one is the optimal location of the TWDNC and TWNDNC protocols. Finally, the probability analyses are justified by executing Monte Carlo simulations.
