Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Study on the Photoproduced Cation Radical of N-Methylphenothiazine in the Gel Matrices

  • The photoproduced cation radical of N-methylphenothiazine $(PC_1)$ doped into phenyltriehtoxysilane (PhiTEOS), vinyltriethoxysilane (VTEOS) and methyltriethoxysilane (METOS) was studied with electron spin resonance (ESR) and electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR). The photoinduced charge separation efficiency was determined by integration of ESR spectra which correspond to the amount of photoproduced cation radical in the matrices. This was correlatively studied with the polarity and pore size of the gel matrices. The relative polarity of the matrices was determined by measuring ${\lambda}_{max}$ values of $PC_1$ in the different matrices. The relative pore size among the matrices was determined by measuring relative proton matrix ENDOR line widths of the photoproduced cation of $PC_1$. The decay kinetic constants of the cation radical of $PC_1$ in the different matrices with relatively studied with fitting the biexponential decay curves after exposure at the ambient condition. This is correlatively interpreted with the polarity and pore size of the matrices.

Under-Developed and Under-Utilized Eclipsing Binary Model Capabilities

  • Existing but largely unused binary star model capabilities are examined. An easily implemented scheme is parameterization of starspot growth and decay that can stimulate work on outer convection zones and their dynamos. Improved precision in spot computation now enhances analysis of very precise data. An existing computational model for blended spectral line profiles is accurate for binary system effects but needs to include damping, thermal Doppler, and other intrinsic broadening effects. Binary star ephemerides had been found exclusively from eclipse timings until recently, but now come also from whole light and radial velocity curves. A logical further development will be to expand these whole curve solutions to include eclipse timings. An attenuation model for circumstellar clouds, with several absorption and scattering mechanisms, has been applied only once, perhaps because the model clouds have fixed locations. However the clouds could be made to move dynamically and be combined into moving streams and disks. An area of potential interest is polarization curve analysis, where incentive for modeling could follow from publication of observed polarization curves. Other recent advances include direct single step solutions for temperatures of both stars of an eclipsing binary and third body kinematics from combined light and velocity curves.

The effects of the scattering opacity and the color temperature on numerically modelling of the first peak of type IIb supernovae

  • A type IIb supernova (SN IIb) is the result of core-collapse of a massive star which lost most of its hydrogen-rich envelope during its evolution. The pre-SN progenitor properties, such as the total radius and the mass of the hydrogen-rich envelope, can widely vary due to the mass-loss history of the progenitors. Optical light curves of SNe IIb are dominated by energy released by the hydrogen recombination and the radioactive decay of 56Ni in the early and late epochs respectively. This may result in distinctive double peaked light curves like the one observed in SN 1993J. The first peak, caused by the hydrogen recombination, can be modelled with numerical simulations providing information on the pre-SN progenitor properties. We compare two radiation-hydrodynamics codes, STELLA and SNEC, that are frequently used in SNe modelling, and investigate the effect of opacity treatment on the temporal evolution of the color temperature of SNe and eventually on the optical light curves. We find that with a proper treatment of the scattering opacity, SNe IIb models exploded from the progenitor models evolved with latest stellar evolution model hardly match the observational data. We also discuss the smaller scale features found in the models during hydrogen recombination phase.

  • Shut-in pressure, reopenting pressure and fracture orientation are very important parameters to be evaluated precisely in in-situ stress measurement by hydraulic fracturing. Graphical methods on pressure-time curves have been conventionally used, even though these are seriously dependent on subjectivity of interpreters. So there have been many demands on new method to objectivity in determining parameters. We have developed integrated hydrofracturing data processing program (HYDFRAC), based on nonlinear regression analysis and can be invoked under the Window graphical user interface. HYDFRAC consiste of three routines, that is shut-in pressure routine, reopening pressure routine, and fracture delineation routine. Each of routines include independent modules according to parameter determination methods. Its application to field tests ensured both objectivity and facility in determining of hydraulic fracturing parameters. Determining shut-in pressures at each pressurization cycles, we adopted the exponential pressure-decay method(EPD method), the bilinear pressure-decay-rate method (PDR method), and the tangent intersection method in order to find the pressurization-cyclic tendency of shut-in pressures. The estimated pressure by PDR method exists in the range of the upper and lower values by EPD method, and lies near to the upper value more than the lower. Being the pressurization cycle increased, the range of upper and lower limits come to be stabilized gradually. By graphical superposition method and bilinear pressure-accumulated volume method, reopening pressures were determined. Vertical and inclined fracture attitudes were determined by applying the directional statistics and sinusoidal curve fitting, respectively. The results of evaluation of hydrofracturing parameters showed that statistical methods could enhance the objectivity better than graphical methods.

보리전분젤의 역학적 성질 (Mechanical Properties of Barley Starch Gels)

  • 리오메타 또는 회전점도계를 사용하여 $9{\sim}30%$ 쌀보리와 겉보리전분 젤의 역학적 성질을 조사하였다. 20 및 30% 보리전분젤의 압축파괴특성은 $0{\sim}2\;kg$의 하중하에서 탄성, 소성 및 파괴의 3영역을 포함한 변형을 나타내었다. 압축응력완화 곡선은 시료전분젤의 점탄성이 2개의 Maxwell 모형을 병렬로 연결한 4요소역학 모형으로 설명할 수 있음을 보였다. 또 9% 전분젤에 대한 정상전단하의 응력완화는 선형점탄성 이론으로 설명할 수 있었으며 이들 응력완화과정은 전분젤의 구조에 미치는 온도 또는 첨가제영향의 검토에 유효한 것으로 시사되었다.

THE MILLIMETER-RADIO EMISSION OF BL LACERTAE DURING TWO γ-RAY OUTBURSTS

  • We present a study of the inexplicit connection between radio jet activity and ${\gamma}$-ray emission of BL Lacertae (BL Lac; 2200+420). We analyze the long-term millimeter activity of BL Lac via interferometric observations with the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) obtained at 22, 43, 86, and 129 GHz simultaneously over three years (from January 2013 to March 2016); during this time, two ${\gamma}$-ray outbursts (in November 2013 and March 2015) can be seen in ${\gamma}$-ray light curves obtained from Fermi observations. The KVN radio core is optically thick at least up to 86 GHz; there is indication that it might be optically thin at higher frequencies. To first order, the radio light curves decay exponentially over the time span covered by our observations, with decay timescales of $411{\pm}85$ days, $352{\pm}79$ days, $310{\pm}57$ days, and $283{\pm}55$ days at 22, 43, 86, and 129 GHz, respectively. Assuming synchrotron cooling, a cooling time of around one year is consistent with magnetic field strengths $B{\sim}2{\mu}T$ and electron Lorentz factors ${\gamma}$ ~ 10 000. Taking into account that our formal measurement errors include intrinsic variability and thus over-estimate the statistical uncertainties, we find that the decay timescale ${\tau}$ scales with frequency ${\nu}$ like ${\tau}{\propto}{\nu}^{-0.2}$. This relation is much shallower than the one expected from opacity effects (core shift), but in agreement with the (sub-)mm radio core being a standing recollimation shock. We do not find convincing radio flux counterparts to the ${\gamma}$-ray outbursts. The spectral evolution is consistent with the 'generalized shock model' of Valtaoja et al. (1992). A temporary increase in the core opacity and the emergence of a knot around the time of the second ${\gamma}$-ray event indicate that this ${\gamma}$-ray outburst might be an 'orphan' flare powered by the 'ring of fire' mechanism.

도로 차선 재료의 공용수명 예측방법 (Methodology to Predict Service Lives of Pavement Marking Materials)

  • 차선의 밝기를 나타내는 반사성능은 교통량, 도색 후 경과시간, 차선재료, 색상 등에 따라 지역별로 차이가 발생한다. 본 연구에서는 고속도로에서 조사된 차선 성능의 자료를 바탕으로 교통량과 차선의 공용수명을 독립변수로 하고 차선의 성능을 종속변수로 하는 회귀식을 산정하였다. 전국의 고속도로를 대상으로 모바일 차선반사 성능 차량을 사용하여 $2005{\sim}2006$년의 2년동안 3개월 간격으로 차선의 성능을 추적 조사하였다. 축적된 DB에는 차선의 성능뿐 아니라 차선의 재료, 색상, 기하구조, 교통량, 도색시기 등이 포함되어 있다. 본 연구에서 추적 조사된 차선성능을 기초로하여 다양한 환경에서의 차선재료의 성능을 비교 분석하여 여러 인자에 의한 차선성능 곡선을 도출하였다. 차선성능 곡선을 통해 지역별 교통량과 도색 이후의 시간의 경과에 따른 차선의 성능을 예측할 수 있었다. 선형함수, 로그함수, 지수함수, 음지수함수 등을 이용하여 차선의 성능을 나타내는 회귀식과 변동을 추정한 후, 결정계수가 가장 높고, 현장측정치와 가장 유사한 모형을 차선의 성능 예측모형으로 결정하였다. 현장조사 결과와의 검증결과, 차선성능 예측 모델은 90% 신뢰도에서 유의함을 볼 수 있었고, 특히 누적 교통량의 증가에 따라 현장 데이터와 높은 연관성을 보여주었다. 따라서 본 방법론에 의한 차선수명 예측 모델을 통해 차선의 공용수명과 잔존수명을 예측하여 도색시기를 결정할 수 있다.

Energy- and Time-Dependent Branching to Competing Paths in Coupled Unimolecular Dissociations of Chlorotoluene Radical Cations

  • The energy- and time-dependent branching to the competing dissociation paths are studied by theory for coupled unimolecular dissociations of the o-, m-, and p-chlorotoluene radical cations to $C_7{H_7}^+$ (benzylium and tropylium). There are four different paths to $C_7{H_7}^+$, three to the benzylium ion and one to the tropylium ion, and all of them are coupled together. The branching to the multiple paths leads to the multiexponential decay of reactant with the branching ratio depending on both internal energy and time. To gain insights into the multipath branching, we study the detailed kinetics as a function of time and internal energy on the basis of ab inito/RRKM calculations. The number of reaction steps to $C_7{H_7}^+$ is counted for each path. Of the three isomers, the meta mostly goes through the coupling, whereas the para proceeds with little or no coupling. In the beginning, some reactants with high internal energy decay fast to the benzylium ion without any coupling and others rearrange to the other isomers. Later on all three isomers dissociate to the products via long-lived intermediates. Thus, the reactant shows a multiexponential decay and the branching ratio varies with time as the average internal energy decreases with time. The reciprocal of the effective lifetime is taken as the rate constant. The resulting rate-energy curves are in line with experiments. The present results suggest that the coupling between the stable isomers is thermodynamically controlled, whereas the branching to the product is kinetically controlled.

CsI:X(X=Li+,K+,Rb+단결정의 섬광특성 (Scintillation Characteristics of CsI:X(X=Li+,K+,Rb+ Single Crystals)

  • CsI에 활성제로 Li, K, Rb를 첨가하여 CsI(Li), CsI(K) 및 CsI(Rb) 단결정을 Czochralski방법으로 육성하였다. $^{137}CS$(0.662 MeV)에 대한 CsI(Li:0.2 mole%) 섬광체의 에너지 분해능은 14.5%이었고 CsI(K:0.5 mole%) 섬광체는 15.9%이었으며 CsI(Rb:1.5 mole%) 섬광체는 17.0%이였다. 이들 CsI(Li), CsI(K) 및 CsI(Rb) 섬광체의 $\gamma$선 에너지에 대한 에너지 교정곡선은 선형적 이였다. 일정비율 시간분석법(CFT :constant-fraction timing method)으로 측정한 CsI(Li:0.2 mole%), CsI(K:0.5 mole%) 및 CsI(Rb:1.5 mole%) 성광체의 시간 분해능은 각각 9.0 ns, 14.7 ns 및 9.7 ns이였다. CsI(Li:0.2 mole%), CsI(K:0.5 mole%) 및 CsI(Rb:1.5 mole%) 섬광체의 형광감쇠시간은 각각 ${\tau}_1=41.2\;ns$, ${\tau}_2=483\;ns$, ${\tau}_1=47.2\;ns$, ${\tau}_2=417\;ns$${\tau}_1=41.3\;ns$${\tau}_2=553\;ns$이였다. 그리고 CsI(Li:0.2 mole%), CsI(K:0.5 mole%) 및 CsI(Rb:1.5 mole%) 단결정의 인광감쇠시간은 각각 0.51 s, 0.57 s 및 0.56 s이였다.

식물플랑크톤 색소의 형광 특성과 lifetime 측정 (Steady state and Lifetime Measurements of Primary Fluorescence from Phytoplanktons)

  • 남조류와 crytomonads를 포함한 식물플랑크톤의 일차적 형광특성을 in vivo 상태에서 조사하였다. 형광과 exciatation 스펙트럼을 측정한 견과, 약 580-640 nm 영역에 걸친 형광 스펙트럼이, 조사된 모든 식물플랑크톤으로부터 얻어졌다. 관찰된 형광 스펙트럼의 $\lambda_{max}$ 값은, Synechofoccus sp.(SYN)을 제외하고 모두 유사한 것으로 나타났다 $(\pm3nm)$. 관찰된 형광 스펙트럼의 형광소(fluorophore)를 밝히기 위하여, 식물플랑크톤의 형광 스펙트럼의 세기와 모양, $\lambda_{max}$를 식물플랑크톤에 존재하는 유기화합물의 표준용액의 것과 비교하였다. 식물플랑크톤의 fluorescence $lifetime(\lambda)$과 fluorescence decay curve를 식물플랑크톤에 존재하는 유기화합물의 표준용액의 $\lambda$값과 비교하였다. 580 nm의 형광 파장을 사용하여 얻은 식물플랑크톤의 fluorescence decay는 menoex-ponential과 biexponential decay를 보였으며, 식물플랑크톤의 $\lambda(1.39-1.95ns)$ b-phycoerythrin의 표준용액의 $\lambda(3.23ns)$값보다 현저히 작게 나타났다. 이는 이미 알려진 광합성 능력을 가진 intact cell 내부에서 엽록소 a와 biliprotein간의 효율적인 에너지 전달 체계에 의한 $\lambda$값의 단축으로 여겨지며, 580nm의 형광특성이 biliprotein에 의한 것임을 보여준다.
