Crystallization of Neodymium carbonate from Neodymium Chloride Solution (염화네오디뮴 수용액으로부터 탄산네오디뮴 결정화)

  • In this study, the crystallization of neodymium carbonate from neodymium chloride solution by addition of ammonium bicarbonate was investigated. The concentration of reactants such as neodymium chloride and ammonium bicarbonate, and reaction temperature play an important part in order to obtain the crystal of neodymium carbonate. It seemed that amorphous neodymium carbonate was prepared by aggregation of primary particles formed through nucleation. If reaction rate was increased by increasing the concentration of reactants and reaction temperature, then neodymium carbonate crystal could be obtained. Lanthanite-type neodymium carbonate[$Nd_2(CO_3)_3{\cdot}8H_2O$] and tengerite-type neodymium carbonate[$Nd_2(CO_3)_3{\cdot}2.5H_2O$] could be obtained with reaction renditions. Lanthanite-type neodymium carbonate was sensitive to temperature. The thermal decomposition of neodymium carbonate contained the processes or dehydration, decarbonation and crystalization of $Nd_2O_3$. The shape of lanthanite-type neodymium carbonate was irregular lump type, and tengerite-type neodymium carbonate had the shape of needle type. The shape of $Nd_2O_3$ was affected by the shape of neodymium carbonate.

Calcination Properties of Cement Raw Meal and Limestone with Oxidation/Reduction Condition (산화/환원 소성분위기에서 석회석 및 시멘트 원료물질의 소성거동 특성)

  • When the multi-stage combustion process is applied to the cement kiln to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions in the cement industry, oxidation/reduction section that can increase combustion efficiency by reducing NOx to NO and completely burning unburned materials is essential In this study, when applied the oxidation/reduction system of the cement kiln preheater and calciner, the optimal oxidation/reduction calcination crisis that can secure the quality stability of the final product, cement clinker, was to be observed macroscopically, and the mass change of raw materials according to the burning conditions, decarbonation rate, and calcination rate were investigated. The results showed that the thermal decomposition of raw materials tends to be promoted in the oxidation condition rather than in the reduction condition, and that the thermal decomposition of limestone, which has a relatively high CaO content, is carried out later than that of cement raw meal, which is thought to be caused by the CO2 fractionation in the kiln. The thermal decomposition properties of raw materials according to oxidation/reducing burning condition showed a relatively large difference in temperature range lower than normal limestone themal decomposition temperature, which is thought to be expected to improve the thermal efficiency of raw materials according to the formation of oxidation condition in the section 750℃ of burning temperature. However, for this study, lab scale. Because there is a difference from the field process as a scale study, it is deemed necessary to verify the actual test results of the pilot scale.

A Study on the Characteristics of Manufactured Mg Crown on the Calcining Conditions of Dolomite (백운석의 소성 조건에 따른 제조 Mg crown의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Mg crowns were manufactured using domestic dolomite (Ca·Mg(CO3)2) (20~30 mm). In order to manufacture the calcined dolomite (CaO·MgO), (a) electric furnace (950 ℃, 480 min) and (b) microwave furnace (950 ℃, 60 min) processes were used. As a result of XRD analysis, it was analyzed as (a) CaO 56.9 wt%, MgO 43.1 wt% by electric furnace process and (b) CaO 55 wt%, MgO 45 wt% by microwave furnace process. Even when the decarbonation reaction time of dolomite was shortened by 1/8 in microwave furnace process compare with electric furnace process, the calcined dolomite could be produced. The hydration reaction (ASTM C 110) is a standard for the hydration reactivity of calcined dolomite, and the calcined dolomite produced by electric furnace process showed a high hydration reactivity (max temp 79.8 ℃/1.5 minutes). Such hydration reactivity was occurred by only CaO hydration reaction and that was confirmed by XRD analysis. The calcined dolomite produced by microwave furnace process showed low hydration reactivity (max temp 81.7 ℃/19.5 minutes). Such low hydration reactivity was occurred by CaO and MgO hydration reaction due to the hydration reaction of CaO thereafter occurring of the hydration reaction of MgO, and that was confirmed by XRD analysis. The prepared Mg crown were 58.8 g and 74.6 g by electric furnace and microwave furnace processes, respectively, under the reaction conditions of 1,230 ℃, 60 min, 5 × 10-2 torr by silicothermic reduction.

Characteristics of finishing materials used in tomb No.1 of the Songje-ri, in Naju (나주 송제리 고분군 1호분에 사용된 마감재의 재료적 특성)

  • This study aims to characterize the material of the finishing materials used in the No.1 stone chamber tomb of the Baekje-era tumuli in Songjeri, Naju with mineralogical, chemical, and physical analyses. The finishing material is a mixture of white lumps and fragments, presumed to be shells, that remain on the surface and between the gaps of the stone walls inside the tomb. The analysis results revealed that the main constituent mineral of the finishing material is calcite. Infrared spectroscopy showed peaks due to calcium carbonate, and thermal reaction decarbonation in the 700~800℃ range, high calcium content, and loss on ignition were confirmed. Therefore, the main material of the finishing materials was determined to be lime, and since no aggregates such as sand or gravel were found, it was identified as lime paste. The shell fragments mixed into the lime paste appear dark blue or grayish-white in color, with no original shape remaining. The surface has a layered structure, and microscopic observations revealed prismatic layers with a columnar structure and nacreous layers with a consistent orientation, suggesting that the shells are from bivalve mollusks. Additionally, X-ray imaging of the shell fragments showed holes and tunnels caused by boring marine organisms both on the surface and inside, and radiocarbon dating results confirmed that the dating of the shells was consistent with the construction period of the tomb. It is concluded that the finishing material used in Tomb No. 1 in Songje-ri, Naju, was lime paste mixed with shell fragments, and the lime was made using the shells of bivalve mollusks as the raw material.

Geology, Mineralization, and Age of the Pocheon Fe(-Cu) Skarn Deposit, Korea (한국 포천 철(-동) 스카른 광상의 지질, 광화작용 및 생성연대)

  • The Pocheon iron (-copper) deposit, located at the northwestern part of the Precambrian Gyeonggi massif in South Korea, genetically remains controversial. Previous researchers advocated a metamorphosed (-exhalative) sedimentary origin for iron enrichment. In this study, we present strong evidences for skarnification and Fe mineralization, spatially associated with the Myeongseongsan granite. The Pocheon deposit is composed of diverse carbonate rocks such as dolostone and limestone which are partially overprinted by various hydrothermal skarns such as sodic-calcic, calcic and magnesian skarn. Iron (-copper) mineralization occurs mainly in the sodic-calcic skarn zone, locally superimposed by copper mineralization during retrograde stage of skarn. Age data determined on phlogopites from retrograde skarn stage by Ar-Ar and K-Ar methods range from $110.3{\pm}1.0Ma$ to $108.3{\pm}2.8Ma$, showing that skarn iron mineralization in the Pocheon is closely related to the shallow-depth Myeongseongsan granite (ca. 112 Ma). Carbon-oxygen isotopic depletions of carbonates in marbles, diverse skarns, and veins can be explained by decarbonation and interaction with an infiltrating hydrothermal fluids in open system ($XCO_2=0.1$). The results of sulfur isotope analyses indicate that both of sulfide (chalcopyrite-pyrite composite) and anhydrites in skarn have very high sulfur isotope values, suggesting the $^{34}S$ enrichment of the Pocheon sulfide and sulfate sulfur was derived from sulfate in the carbonate protolith. Shear zones with fractures in the Pocheon area channeled the saline, high $fO_2$ hydrothermal fluids, resulting in locally developed intense skarn alteration at temperature range of about $500^{\circ}$ to $400^{\circ}C$.

Comparative Study of Total Acidity Content of Makgeolli with Pre-Treatment and Analysis Methods (전처리과정과 분석방법에 따른 막걸리의 총산 함량 비교)

  • The total acidity (TA) of Makgeolli was affected by suspended solids and $CO_2$ produced during the fermentation process. Nine Makgeollis (four sterilized and five unsterilized Makgeollis) were collected in the market, and their TAs were compared before and after filtration and $CO_2$ removal. TAs of sterilized Makgeollis were 0.379~0.477%, which significantly decreased to 0.167~0.225% after filtration and 0.132~0.170% after $CO_2$ removal (P<0.05). TAs of unsterilized Makgeollis were 0.412~0.467% and decreased to 0.157~0.365% after filtration and 0.143~0.280% after $CO_2$ removal (P<0.05). TAs of Makgeollis were compared by three methods using different indicators. The TAs of sterilized and unsterilized Makgeollis were 0.105~0.123% and 0.105~0.200%, respectively, by bromthymol blue+neutral red (light green), 0.129~0.154% and 0.130~0.255%, respectively, by phenolphthalein (faint pink), and 0.120~0.146% and 0.130~0.232%, respectively, by bromthymol (blue). Nowadays, Makgeolli is commercialized with various distinct colors, and thus it is important to select appropriate indicators for proper titration endpoint identification for TA measurement. The compositions of organic acids profiles varied depending on sterilized or unsterilized Makgeollis, in which oxalic acid (0.108~0.329 mg/mL), malic acid (ND to 0.134 mg/mL), lactic acid (0.127~0.776 mg/mL), and citric acid (ND to 1.159 mg/mL) were found, and lactic acid was in unsterilized more than sterilized Makgeollis.

Mineralogical Analysis of Calcium Silicate Cement according to the Mixing Rate of Waste Concrete Powder (폐콘크리트 미분말 치환율에 따른 이산화탄소 반응경화 시멘트의 광물상 분석)

  • In the realm of cement manufacturing, concerted efforts are underway to mitigate the emission of greenhouse gases. A significant portion, approximately 60%, of these emissions during the cement clinker sintering process is attributed to the decarbonation of limestone, which serves as a fundamental ingredient in cement production. Prompted by these environmental concerns, there is an active pursuit of alternative technologies and admixtures for cement that can substitute for limestone. Concurrently, initiatives are being explored to harness technology within the cement industry for the capture of carbon dioxide from industrial emissions, facilitating its conversion into carbonate minerals via chemical processes. Parallel to these technological advances, economic growth has precipitated a surge in construction activities, culminating in a steady escalation of construction waste, notably waste concrete. This study is anchored in the innovative production of calcium silicate cement clinkers, utilizing finely powdered waste concrete, followed by a thorough analysis of their mineral phases. Through X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis, it was observed that increasing the substitution level of waste concrete powder and the molar ratio of SiO2 to (CaO+SiO2) leads to a decrease in Belite and γ-Belite, whereas minerals associated with carbonation, such as wollastonite and rankinite, exhibited an upsurge. Furthermore, the formation of gehlenite in cement clinkers, especially at higher substitution levels of waste concrete powder and the aforementioned molar ratio, is attributed to a synthetic reaction with Al2O3 present in the waste concrete powder. Analysis of free-CaO content revealed a decrement with increasing substitution rate of waste concrete powder and the molar ratio of SiO2/(CaO+SiO2). The outcomes of this study substantiate the viability of fabricating calcium silicate cement clinkers employing waste concrete powder.

A Study on the Method for Quantifying CO2 Contents in Decarbonated Slag Materials by Differential Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (DTG 분석법을 활용한 슬래그류 비탄산염 재료의 CO2 정량 측정방법 연구)

  • Limestone (CaCO3, calcium carbonate), which is used as a raw material in the portland cement and steel industry, emits CO2 through decarbonation by high temperatures in the manufacturing process. To reduce CO2 emissions by the use of raw materials like limestone, it has been proposed to replace limestone with various industrial by-products that contain CaO but less or none of the carbonated minerals, that cause CO2 emissions. Loss of Ignition (LOI), Thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and Infrared Spectroscopy (IR) are used to quantitative the amount of CO2 emission by using these industrial by-products, but CO2 emissions can be either over or underestimated depending on the characteristics of by-product materials. In this study, we estimated CO2 contents by LOI, TG, IR and DTG(Differential Thermogravimetric analysis) of calcite(CaCO3) and samples that contain CO2 in the form of carbonate and whose weight increases by oxidation at high temperatures. The test results showed for CaCO3 samples, all test methods have a sufficient level of reliability. On the other hand, for the CO2 content of the sample whose weight increases at high temperature, LOI and TG did not properly estimate the CO2 content of the sample, and IR tended to overestimate compared to the predicted value, but the estimated result by DTG was close to the predicted valu e. From these resu lts, in the case of samples that contain less than a few percent of CO2 and whose weight increases during the temperature that carbonate minerals decompose, estimating the CO2 content using DTG is a more reasonable way than LOI, TG, and IR.
