  • Ovigerous crab of Sphaerozius nitidus of the family Menippidae was collected from Geojedo, Gyeongsangnamdo and hatched in the laboratory. Digital imaging of live zoeas of the first zoea stage of S. nitidus has been reported for the first time in the world, and its morphology has been redescribed and illustrated. This study is different from former study in that it has three unequal setae with exopod of antenna, 5+4 setae with basial endite of maxilla, and dorsomedial spine and lateral minute spine with fork of telson. The first zoea of S. nitidus has black pigments occurring behind the eyes, on the dorsal spine medially and on the basis of lateral carapace spines, on basal of basis of maxillipeds 1, 2, and posterior margins of somites 1-5, and yellowish green chromatophores on the dorsal spine.

  • An ovigerous hair crab, Telmessus acutidens, was collected in South Korean waters and its larvae were reared in the laboratory. The larval development consists of four zoeal (including an extra zoeal stage) and one megalopal stages. Four zoeal stages are described and illustrated in detail. The zoeas of the present material show some differences from Kurata (1963)'s plankton-collected zoea of T. acutidens in the characteristics of the carapace spines, an endopod and an exopod of the antenna, and the posterolateral process of the abdominal somite. Kurata's zoea agreed well with that of T. cheiragonus. So, it is suggested that Kurata's zoea may be the second zoea of T. cheiragonus.

  • During a survey for the southern sea of Korea, an iphiculid crab, Pariphiculus coronatus, was newly recorded from Korea. Specimens were obtained at a depth of 109-120 m near Jejudo Island. Pariphiculus coronatus can be distinguished from congeners by the following characters: the carapace length and the carapace width subequal, the surface of carapace covered with round granules, the medial tubercles of the intestinal and cardiac region of the carapace, and the first gonopod curved in the half region and straight in the distal portion. The Korean leucosiods have 16 genera and 20 species so far. Here we provide the diagnosis and illustration of Pariphiculus coronatus.

  • The varunid crab, Varuna yui Hwang & Takeda, 1986, is known as widely distributed in the Southeast Asian region. Three specimens of varunid crabs were collected near the estuary of the river from Korea and identified as V. yui. Varuna yui could be distinguished from the other congeneric species, V. litterata (Fabricius, 1798), by having a more extended mesial lobe on the distal region of the male first gonopod. In this paper, morphological diagnosis and illustrations of the newly collected V. yui are provided. The specimens examined herein were deposited in the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea and Nakdonggang National Institute of Biological Resources.

  • Animals in Order Decapoda consist of a plentiful species and vary in external and internal shape, taste, feeding habit and the feature of alimentary canal. In this case, the morphological study on the midgut epithelium of filter feeding Decapoda in Crustacea, Korean fresh water crayfish (Cambaroides similis Koelbel), the only species dwelling in Korea, were performed by scanning electron microscopy. The anterior-most parts of midgut epithelium appeared to be many shallow, dense and irregular folds where a linear microvilli (MV) (1-3$\\mu$m long) numbered from a few to ten had raised. Middle part of the gut, the folds got gradually shallower. MV arranging on one, two or three lines were slightly thicker than those mentioned above. The number of MV in each group seemed gradual decrease from a apical border with maximum thirty in group to furrow with none. From the middle to posterior parts of the gut, the MV were slightly thinner and longer (2.5-4 $\\mu$m long) and raised twelve on a line and, in some cases, added from one to five on another line. On the posterior-end parts of the gut, the epithelium showed many shallow and dense folds as the anterior parts again. A group of thin and long MV (2-7 $\\mu$m long) countable fifteen on a line were raised to the base of each fold. In some cases, the MV also added utmost in five on the other line. All the MV observed in this study were posteriorly directed.

  • Molt-staging of Metapenaeopsis dalei was determined by microscopic observation on their setal development of dissected uropods, Five major stages (Stage A, B, C, D and E) were defined by the morphology of setal development. Premolt stage (Stage D) can be divided into 4 distinctive substages ($D_1{\sim}D_4$) according to the premolting processes. The setal cones were formed at Stage B under the old cuticle, and the setal shafts were visible at the end of such Stage $D_1'$. The casting process of the old cuticle lasted less than 1 min. The molt stages in M. dalei thus are generally similar to those of other shrimp species.

  • The postembryonic development of the Korean crayfish, Cambaroides similis (Koelbel, 1892), was described in detail and compared with those of other known species of Astacidae and American Cambaridae, and phylogenetic relationship of the genus Cambaroides was discussed. Ovigerous females of the Korean crayfishes appear in May. Durations of juvenile stages 1 and 2 are two and four weeks at 15.0 $\pm$ 0.5$^{\circ}C$, respectively. From juvenile stage 3, it leaves from its mother. It is considered that C. similis is very closely related more to the Astacidae than to the Cambaridae in the characteristics of the maxillule of juvenile stage 1 and the antenna, maxilla, pleopod, and telson of juvenile stage 2.

  • The first zoeal stage of Heptacarpus rectirostris (Stimpson, 1860) is re-described and illustrated in detail from laboratory-hatched material. The first zoea of H. rectirostris is more closely related to that of H. futilirostris than to H. camtschaticus, H. pandaloides, and H. geniculatus by having the pterygostomial spine and two anteroventral denticles on the carapace. The former two species, however, can be readily distinguished by the presence (H. futilirostris) or absence (H. rectirostris) of the posterolateral spine on the abdominal somites 4-5. A provisional key to the first zoeas of Heptacarpus for which larval studies are known from Korea and adjacent waters is provided. A list of larval descriptions within the Hippolytidae from Korea and adjacent waters is also included.

  • Two pagurid hermit crabs of the genus Pagurus, P. proximus Komai, 2000 and P. simulans Komai, 2000, were collected from the East Sea of Korea are reported. Brief descriptions and illustrations of these two species are provided. Both have been confounded with P. brachiomastus (Thallwitz, 1891) until recently Komai (2000a) reviewed the taxonomic status of this species complex. Kim's (1973) record of P. brachiomastus from Korea was synonymized to P. proximus by Komai (2000a) and the latter in Korean waters is confirmed through this study. P. simulans is recorded for the first time from Korea as well as the East Sea (Sea of Japan).

  • The megalopae of Pugettia quadridens quadridens (De Haan, 1850), P. quadridens intermedia Sakai, 1938, and P. marissinica Takeda and Miyake, 1972 were obtainded in the laboratory. They are described and illustrated in detail. The megalopal morphology of these three Pugettia species in compared with other Epialtinae megalopae. P. marissinica is quite ditterent from P. quadrides intermedia and P. quadridens quadridens. P. quadridens intermedia and P. quadridens. quadridens are very closely resemble to each other.
