  • This study was carried out in the peatland for estimating the paleoenvironment based on the analysis from its fossils plant and radiocarbon at the Hwayang-ri, Hyeondeok-myeon, Pyeongtaek-city, South Korea. Variety of fossil was collected from the peatland which could discriminated with naked eye and sorted into seeds, leaves, stems from four-stage of standard sieve. During analysis for the large plant fossil within the peatland, the dead plants were largely divided into 3 fossil zones according to its peatland. In the fossil zone III (the oldest layer; 6,970~6,070 yr $C^{14}$ B.P.), the observation of leaves of hydrophyte such as Trapa sp. and stems of Alnus japonica which appeared in wetland means that the environment was influenced by the climate changes such as rainfall increasing and sea level rise. In the fossil zone II (the middle layer; 6,070~5,800 yr C14 B.P.), the occurrence of Gramineae, Cyperaceae and Fagaceae indicate that the environmental condition might be more or less dry by decreasing rainfall and drop in sea level. The fossil zone I (the recent layer; 5,800~4,540 yr $C^{14}$ B.P.) where lots of herbaceous plants, increasing of Fagaceae, decreasing of A. japonica. and distribution of Pinaceae were showed, was inferred to be repeated both dry and wet environment due to human disturbance.

  • Rice black-streaked dwarf virus(RBSDV) was purified from infected maize leaves. Antiserum against RBSDV was prepared for virus detection by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). In detection of RBSDV by ELISA, effective dilution range of antiserum extracted in RBSDV-containing host plants and insect vectors was from 320 to 2,560 times in rice plant, 320 to 5,120 in maize plant, and 160 to 2,560 times in insect vector, Laodelphax striatellus F, respectively. The percentage of viruliferous vector in overwintered nymphs of Laodelphax striatellus determined by ELISA were 3.0 in Milyang, 2.3 in Chilgok, and 3.7 in Sunsan area. Dead insect vector which could not be tested for vims infection by conventional rice seedling inoculation test could be tested by ELISA. One hundred plants of rice and maize were randomly sampled in the field and tested whether or not they were infected with RBSDV. In rice plants, 4 out of 98 plants turned out to be infected with RBSDV by ELISA. In maize plant, 3 out of 92 plants which were excepted 8 plants to be appeared symptom already were infected. As a result, ELISA could be detected even in case of symptomless plants at early stage of viral infection.

  • Sedimentation is one of the most common and important units in conventional water treatment plants. Structure such as various baffle walls and inclined plate settler may be obstacles to the horizontal flow when it is poorly designed. Therefore, the effects of these structures on characteristics of hydraulic flow must be evaluated to improve the settling efficiency of the floc. The hydraulic characteristic of the four sedimentations at the three real WTPs (water treatment plants), which have different structural properties respectively inside the settling basin, were investigated by tracer (fluoride) test. The inclined plate settler installed inside settling basin caused a undesirable impact on horizontal flow and produced dead zone. Intermediate baffle and solid baffle wall under the inclined plate settler at GE plant help to minimize the formation of density currents and flow short circuiting. However, installing perforated baffle under the inclined plate settler at other plants could not induce even distribution of flow. NaF used as a tracer was recovered more than 90% at investigated all basin. Morill index ($t_{90}/t_{10}$), Modal index ($t_p/T-HRT$) and short-circuiting index ($[M-HRT-t_p/M-HRT$) were determined from tracer test results performed at three WTPs. Those indices ranged 2.99~3.45, 0.44~0.72 and 0.23~0.47, respectively.

  • To clarify the varietal differences of resistance to complete flooding, physiological characteristics in relation to flooding resistance in each growth stage of rice plants, the present study was carried out. The rate of survival after flooding at seeding stage of rice plants of the cultivar 'FR 13A' and Ind. X Jap. cultivars were 91.8% and 33.8% to 40%, respectively, while the Japonica varieties were completely dead. The tolerant varieties which has higher rate of survival showed the higher $O_2$ release, the higher catalase activity and lower peroxidase activity according to flooding treatment. Japonica type varieties showed the higher elongation of plant during flooding, lower recovery of flooding damage and the abrupt decrease of yield according to the increase of flooding periods in comparision to Ind. X Jap. crossed varieties when they were flooded at the active tillering stage. When rice plants were flooded at the booting stage, Ind. X Jap. crossed varieties had the higher photosynthesis, respiratory rate, root oxidizing power, ethylene evolution and lower yield reduction in comparision to japonica varieties.varieties.

  • This paper presents a new identification method which utilizes fuzzy inference in parameter identification. The proposed system has an additional control loop where a real plant is replaced by a plant model. The control system to be designed is to satisfy the following specifications: 1) It has zero steady-state error. 2) It has adequate damping characteristics. 3) 1),2) satisfied, it has a shortest rise-time. Fuzzy rules describe the relationship between comparison results of the features and magnitude of modification in the model parameter values. This method is effective in auto-tuning because the response of the closed loop is verified. The proposed method is tested in simulation for several plants with high-order lags and dead-times.

  • Today's industrialized plants are required to reduce SOx emitted from stacks at factories, utility power stations, etc. For this purpose, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system is installed and gas-gas heater (GGH) is used to play a vital role to reheat the wet treated gas from FGD. The sector plates are located at cold and hot sides of gas gas heater. They serve as sealing to prevent mixing treated and untreated gases. Therefore, the deformation of the sector plate due to its dead weight and gas pressure should be considered as major factor for the sector plate design.

  • Hyphal growth by Fusarium moniliforme was best at -14 bars osmotic water potential. Hyphal growth was prevented at -94 bars. The production of microconidia was best at -14 bars osmotic potential and prevented at -84 bars regardless of Strain. In contrast, this fungus sporulated macroconidia best at -1.4 bars and progressively less with each increment drop in water potential below that of basal media. The rate of spore germination followed a similar pattern with all of the spores; uniformly maximal at about -1.4 bars and progressively slower as the water potential was lowered from -1.4 bars to -42 bars. Under the natural conditions, plants infected by F. moniliforme produce microconidia on the dead tissues instead of producing macroconidia. This phenomenon agrees well with the water potential experiment since the dead plant tissues have a lower water potential than the living plant.

  • To improve the quality of water from water supply source and to establish the management plan of dead plants in flood control reservoir around Juam Lake, the effect of water quality by dead plant in column with passing time was investigated. In column test, the amounts of release by Carex dimorpholepis were $7,893-7,917mg\;m^{-2}\;month^{-1}$ COD, $2,711-2,816mg\;m^{-2}\;month^{-1}$ T-N and $342-547mg\;m^{-2}\;month^{-1}$ T-P. The amounts of release by Miscanthus sacchariflorus were $6,487-6,507mg\;m^{-2}$ COD, $1,813-1,868mg\;m^{-2}$ T-N and $226-405mg\;m^{-2}\;month^{-1}$ T-P in column. Therefore, the release of COD, T-N and T-P by Carex dimorpholepis were more than those by Miscanthus sacchariflorus Benth in column.
