Estuarine dams are a recent and global phenomenon. While estuarine dams can provide the benefit of improved freshwater resources, they can also alter estuarine processes. Due to the wide range of estuarine types and estuarine dam configurations, the effect of estuarine dams on estuaries is not well understood in general. To develop a systematic understanding of the effect of estuarine dam location and freshwater discharge interval on a range of estuarine types (strongly stratified, partially mixed, periodically stratified, and well-mixed), this study used a coupled hydrodynamic-sediment dynamic numerical model (COAWST) and compared flow, sediment transport, and morphological conditions in the pre- and post-dam estuaries. For each estuarine type, scenarios with dam locations at 20, 55 and 90 km from the mouth and discharge intervals of a discharge every 0.5, 3, and 7 days were investigated. The results were analyzed in terms of change in tide, river discharge, estuarine classification, and sediment flux mechanism. The estuarine dam location primarily affected the tide-dominated estuaries, and the resonance length was an important length scale affecting the tidal currents and Stokes return flow. When the location was less than the resonance length, the tidal currents and Stokes return flow were most reduced due to the loss of tidal prism, the dead-end channel, and the shift from mixed to standing tides. The discharge interval primarily affected the river-dominated estuaries, and the tidal cycle period was an important time scale. When the interval was greater than the tidal cycle period, notable seaward discharge pulses and freshwater fronts occurred. Dams located near the mouth with large discharge interval differed the most from their pre-dam condition based on the estuarine classification. Greater discharge intervals, associated with large discharge magnitudes, resulted in scour and seaward sediment flux in the river-dominated estuaries, and the dam located near the resonance length resulted in the greatest landward tidal pumping sediment flux and deposition in the tide-dominated estuaries.
This study explores the possibility of finding intersections of commonness and differences between Mahasweta Devi's short stories, "The Hunt" and "Douloti the Bountiful" and Angela Carter's "Flesh and the Mirror" and "Master" in Fireworks. At appearance, Carter as a writer of Great Britains and Devi as a writer of India in postcolonial period do not seem to share any commonness. This study, however, tried to find "common differences," to quote Chandra Mohanty's terminology, as a basis of solidarity possible between these two different feminist writers. Another concept appropriated in this process of comparing Carter and Devi is Gayatri Spivak's 'planetary comparative literature,' which contends the necessity of critical regional studies and the study of Asian Literature in the study of English literature. Devi and Carter, despite their historical, geopolitical and racial differences, share commonness in depicting Asian or colonized women not only as the oppressed others but also as the subjects who show potential for resistance and independence. Carter portrays Japanese women as the colonized and oppressed others of Japanese society, even though Japan did not have any colonial history. Devi finds in the postcolonial Indian women both the oppressed in the interstice of colonial/postcolonial/patriarchal Indian history and the potential for resistance. Despite some limitation in her understanding of Asia, Carter shows her insight to accept Asia as a true origin of her self-knowledge and performativity of her woman's role. Despite their differences, these two writers use Freud's 'unheimlich' from the feminist point of view, in general. Devi's depiction of the heroine's dead body at the end of the story implicates the possibility of resistance through women's 'uncanny' bodies. Carter converts Freudian and negative connotation of woman's body into positive and comfortable 'home' as a starting point of her self knowledge.

The asymmetric polylactic acid (PLA) membrane was prepared via phase inversion method using non-solvent induced separation (NIPS) technique. This study aims to synthesized as well as to characterize the PLA membrane and evaluating the membrane performance on water flux and permeability. In addition, this research also studied the removal performance of methylene blue dye. The polymer solution has been prepared using 12 wt.% of PLA and dissolved in 88 wt.% of Dimethylacetamide (DMAc) as a solvent. Then, the cast film was immersed in different ratio of coagulant bath medium (distilled water: methanol: ethanol) ranging from 100:0:0, 75:25:0, 75:0:25 and 75:12.5:12.5, respectively). Several characterizations were performed which include, membrane contact angle and membrane porosity. Performance PLA membranes were determined in terms of water flux and permeability at 1 bar transmembrane pressure using dead-end permeation cell. Finally, methylene blue (MB) removal efficiency was tested at the same transmembrane pressure. The findings revealed that the increase of alcohol concentration in coagulant bath resulted in higher porosity and lower contact angle. In short, MB dye rejection efficiency is also closely related to the amount of alcohol ratio used in coagulant baths. Increases in concentration of methanol and ethanol in coagulant bath medium increases the membrane porosity thus increased in efficiency of methylene blue rejection.
Purpose : The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of inhaled nitric oxide(iNO) on gas exchange, hemodynamics and pulmonary inflammation in newborn piglets with E. coli induced septic lung. Methods : Twenty three instrumented and ventilated piglets were randomized into three groups : CON(n=6), PCON(n=9), and PNO(n=8). In the piglets of the PCON and PNO groups, E. coli septic lung was induced by endotracheal instillation of E. coli. Ten ppm iNO was given continuously in the PNO group after endotracheal instillation of E. coli. All animals were mechanically ventilated for six hour with a peak inspiratory pressure of 30 $cmH_2O$, frequency of 25 breaths/min, $FiO_2$ 1.0 and a positive end-expiratory pressure of 4 $cmH_2O$. All measurements were made at one hour intervals during the experiment. At the end of the experiment, lung tissue was harvested for the analysis of myeloperoxidase activity, indicative of lung inflammation. Results : All piglets with pulmonary instillation of E. coli developed E. coli sepsis. Piglets in the PCON group developed progresseve pulmonry hypertension, hypoxemia and hypercarbia compared to the CON group due to increased pulmonary vascular resistance, intrapulmonary shunt fraction and physiologic dead space fraction. iNO did not reverse pulmonary hypertension in the PNO group. However iNO significantly improved oxygenation, which was attributed to marked improvement of venous admixture and partial attenuation of increase in dead space fraction. Increased myeloperoxidase activity in PCON compared to CON was significantly attenuated in PNO. Conclusion : iNO improves oxygenation and lung inflammation in newborn piglets with E. coli induced septic lung.
In this study the nanofiltration (NF) membrane treatment of a nitric acid waste solutions containing $Pb^{+2}$ heavy metal ion discharging from the etching processes of an electronics and semiconductors industry has been studied for the purpose of recycling of nitric acid etching solutions. Three kinds of NF membranes (General Electric Co. Duraslick NF-4040 membrane, Dow Co. Filmtec LP-4040 membrane and Koch Co. SelRO MPS-34 4040 membrane) were tested for their separation efficiency (total rejection) of $Pb^{+2}$ ion and membrane stability in nitric acid solution. NF experiments were carried out with a dead-end membrane filtration laboratory system. The membrane permeate flux was increased with the increasing storage time in nitric acid solution and lowering pH of acid solution because of the enhancing of NF membrane damage by nitric acid. The membrane stability in nitric acid solution was more superior in the order of Filmtec LP-4040 < Duraslick NF-4040 < SelRO MPS-34 4040 membrane. The total rejection of Pb+2 ion was decreased with the increasing storage time in nitric acid solution and lowering the pH of acid solution. The total rejection of $Pb^{+2}$ ion after 4 months NF treatment was decreased from 95% initial value to 20% in the case of Duraslick NF-4040 membrane, from 85% initial value to 65% in the case of SelRO MPS-34 4040 membrane and from 90% initial value to 10% in the case of Filmtec LP-4040 membrane. These results showed that SelRO MPS-34 4040 NF membrane was more suitable for the treatment of an acidic etching waste solutions containing heavy metal ions.
Objectives : The goal of the surgical management of large and giant aneurysm is complete extirpation of the aneurysms with preservation or reconstruction of the parent artery. To improve the surgical management results of those aneurysms in the future, we review our experience and discuss technical maneuvers and strategies used to avoid potential complications of those aneurysm surgery. Material and Methods : During the past 12 years, thirty six cases of large and giant aneurysms(diameter>19mm) were managed by surgery. The clinical characteristics, treatment methods, surgical complications and outcome of those cases were analyzed and, based on the review of the literatures, the preventive methods of surgical complication related to the clipping of those aneurysms were discussed. Results : The locations of those aneurysms were anterior circulation in 34 cases and posterior circulation in 2 cases. The most frequent site of aneurysmal location was a paraclinoidal region of the anterior circulation. The aneurysms were managed surgically by direct clipping of aneurysmal neck in 31 cases, aneurysmal trapping followed by extracranial-intracranial bypass in 2 cases, proximal clipping of parent artery, aneurysmorrhaphy, and excision of aneurysm followed by end to end anastomosis of parent artery in each one case. Surgical complications occurred in 13 cases. A parent vessel occlusion by thrombus formation and parent vessel stenosis after clipping of aneurysm were the main complications. We obtained good outcome in 27, fair 5, poor 1 and dead in 3 case(s). Conclusion : We conclude that selection of suitable management method for each case, high quality of surgical technique and prevention of complication during operation are important key points for the successful treatment of large and giant aneurysm. The heparinization prior to application of temporary clip on parent vessels, aneurysmal decompression during dissection and clipping of aneurysm, complete closing of the aneurysmal neck and avoiding the narrowing of parent vessel after clipping of aneurysm were the main technical maneuvers used to avoid complications of those aneurysm surgery.

Livestock industry in Korea has been growing rapidly and has reached 23 trillion Korean won in 2021. This study focuses on broiler, which is one of the largest sectors in livestock industry. As the effects of climate change get more serious, primary industry such as livestock industry is fragile to climate change since it directly interacts with nature. Therefore, maintaining suitable rearing environment is important. One of the most frequently used ventilation type for controlling the rearing environment of broiler house, tunnel ventilation, causes frequent air velocity fluctuation which makes maintaining the rearing environment important. By measuring the air temperature, relative humidity and air velocity in various points inside the broiler house, the internal thermal environment uniformity was analyzed according to length, width and zone. The experimental house was found to have dead zone with high air temperature, relative humidity and low air velocity near the end of the inlet and at the end of the broiler house. By using heat stress index to analyze quantitatively, zone with highest heat stress index was found to increase by 7.55% compared to the lowest zone. As a result, to maintain uniform rearing environment inside the broiler house, different factors must be measured and analyzed and used to operate the environmental control facilities.
Background : Pressure-controlled ventilation (PCV) is frequently used recently as the initial mode of mechanical ventilation in the patients with respiratory failure. Theoretically, because of its high initial inspiratory flow, pressure-controlled ventilation has lower peak inspiratory pressure and improved gas exchange than volume-controlled ventilation (VCV). But the data from previous studies showed controversial results about the gas exchange. Moreover, the comparison study between PCV and VCV with various inspiration : expiration time ratios (I : E ratios) is rare. So this study was performed to compare the respiratory mechanics and gas exchange between PCV and VCV with various I : E raitos. Methods : Nine patients receiving mechanical ventilation for respiratory failure were enrolled. They were ventilated by both PCV and VCV with various I : E ratios (1 : 2, 1 : 1.3 and 1.7 : 1). $FiO_2$, tidal volume, respiratory rate and external positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) were kept constant throughout the study. After 20 minutes of each ventilation mode, arterial blood gas, airway pressures, expired $CO_2$ were measured. Results : In both PCV and VCV, as the I : E ratio increased, the mean airway pressure was increased, and $PaCO_2$ and physiologic dead space fraction were decreased. But P(A-a)$O_2$ was not changed. In all three different I : E ratios, peak inspiratory pressure was lower during PCV, and mean airway pressure was higher during PCV. But $PaCO_2$ level, physiologic dead space fraction and P(A-a)$O_2$ were not different between PCV and VCV with three different I : E ratios. Conclusion : There was no difference in gas exchange between PCV and VCV under the same tidal volume, frequency and I : E ratio.
This paper deals with experimental research to increase thermal storage efficiency of hot water stored in an actual storage tank for solar application. The effect of increased energy input rate due to stratification has been discussed and illustrated through experimental data, which was taken by changing dynamic and geometric parameters. Ranges of the parameters were defined for flow rate, the ratio of diameter to height of the tank and inlet-exit water temperature difference. During the heat storage, when the flow was lower, the temperature difference was larger and the ratio of diameter to height of the tank was higher, the momentum exchange decreased. As for this experiment, when the flow rate was 8 liter/min, the temperature difference was $30^{\circ}C$ and the ratio of diameter to height of the tank was 3, the momentum exchange was minimized resulting in a good thermocline and a stable stratification. In the case of using inlet ports, if the modified Richardson number was less than 0.004, full mixing occured and so unstable stratification occured, which mean that this could not be recommended as storage through thermal stratification. Using a distributor was better than using inlet ports to form a sharp thermocline and to enhance the stratification. It was possible to get storage efficiency of 95% by using the distributor, which was higher than a storage efficiency of 85% obtained by using inlet ports in same operation condition. Furthermore, if the distributor was manufactured so that the mainpipe decreases in diameter toward the dead end to maintain constant static pressure, it might be predicted that further stable stratification and higher storage efficiency are obtainable(ie:more than 95%).
Ammonium perchlorate (AP) is primarily derived from the process of liquid incineration treatment when dismantling a solid rocket propellant. A series of batch dead-end nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane experiments were conducted to explore the retention mechanisms of AP under various hydrodynamic and solution conditions. Low levels of silicate type of siloxane had been detected through the GC/MS and FTIR analysis of liquid solutions extracted from solid ammonium perchlorate composite propellant (APCP). It is indicated that NF/RO membranes fouling in the presence of APCP was mainly attributed to the AP interactions because the concentration of silicate type of siloxane was negligible compared to that of AP. The osmotic pressure of AP was presumably resulted in the flux declines ranging from 13 to 17% in the case of the application of low-pressure (551 and 896 kPa for NF and RO) compared to those in application of high-pressure. The retention of AP by NF/RO membranes significantly varied from approximately 10 to 70% for NF and 26 to 87% for RO, depending on the operating and solution water chemistry conditions. The results suggested that retention efficiency of AP was fairly increased by reducing concentration polarization (i.e. application of low-pressure and stirring speed of 600 rpm) and increasing the pH of a solution. The result of this study was also consistent with the previous modeling of 'solute mass transfer of NF/RO membranes' and demonstrated that hydrodynamic and solution water chemistry conditions are to be a key factor in the retention of AP by NF/RO membranes.
