The aim of the present study was to investigate the ear and kernel characteristics of colored waxy corn hybrids during ripening according to different sowing dates. Heukjinjuchal and Eolrukchal 1 were sown at April 20 (first cropping) and July 20 (second cropping) in 2011~2012. The accumulated temperature from silking to harvesting was about $590{\sim}610^{\circ}C$. It takes 23~24 days when Heukjinjuchal and Eolrukchal 1 were sown in April 20, but July 20 sowing takes 32~35 days. Ear weight, ear diameter, 100-kernel weight and starch content of colored waxy corn were increased as ears matured (p<0.05). Growth temperature was getting decreased during the ripening stage of second cropping, the rate of ear and kernel development had slowed. Starch granules started to accumulate in the cells around the pericarp, then developed in the cells around the embryo. In the second cropping, starch granules in the kernel of colored waxy corn were less compact than the first cropping. The contents of total anthocyanins, cyanidin-3-glucoside and pelargonidin-3-glucoside were increased according to ripening (p<0.05). These results will be helpful to farmers for double cropping of colored waxy corn cultivation and management.

Since maize (Zea mays L.) originated in central and south America, it requires warm climate conditions throughout its growing season. Growth halts when night-time temperatures drop below 10℃, and the plant may die if temperature reach -1.7℃. Thus, temperature should be maintained between 10 and 30℃ from seeding to maturity. The germination temperature for maize should be at least 8-11℃, whit an optimal range 32-34℃. Since temperature significantly affects the germination rate and period, it plays a crucial role in maize growth. In this study, we evaluated the quantity and feed value of 11 major varieties to determine those best suited for maize cultivation as feed in higher latitude, specifically in Democratic People's of Republic of Korea, below 38 degrees north. A cultivation test was also conducted in Suwon in Republic of Korea, to assess adaptability in areas south of Mt. Suyang. Among the varieties tested, Shinhwangok2 reached silking the fastest, in 65 days, while Gwangpyeongok took the longest at 75 days. The stem length of all varieties exceeded 230 cm. Gwangpyeongok had the tallest stems, while Daanok and Shinhwangok2ho displayed the highest ear ratios. Dacheongok presented the highest values in both dry matter and TDN quantity, with 31,420 kg/ha and 21,66 kg/ha respectively. Pyeonggangok had the highest crude protein content at 8.0%. TDN (%) ranged from 57-68%, with Hwangdaok reaching up to 68%. Based on these findings, Dacheongok and Pyeonggangok appear to be the most suitable varieties for cultivation in terms of both quantity and feed value.

A field experiment was carried out to determine the optimum application level of dicamba herbicide for efficient control of Abutilon avicennae in silage corn field. Five treatments of application levels (0 ; control, $0.75{\ell},\;1.0{\ell},\;1.25{\ell}\;and\;1.5{\ell}$) were arranged at National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon in 1995 and 1996. The hybrid silage corn was P 3352 and dicamba herbicide was applied at 5~6 leaf stage of corn. The growth of corn was poor in control plot, and the days for tasseling and silking were delayed 2~3 days when compared with the plots of herbicide application. The control efficiency of Abutilon avicennae was excellent as 94.7~98.1% in the plots of dicamba application. A slight injury of herbicide was observed at early stage of corn when applied at $1.0{\ell},\;1.25{\ell}\;and\;1.5{\ell}$ of dicamba per ha. Forage dry matter(DM) yield, length and weight of ear in the plots of dicamba treatments were significantly higher than those of control. The DM yield of control(12,070kg/ha) was only 64.2~66.9% of dicamba treatment plot(18,050~18,795kg/ha). However, there was no yield difference among dicamba application level. The percentage of ear to total DM yield was ranged from 53.4 to 56.8%. The nutritive value(crude protein, ADF, NDF, digestibility and TDN) was very similar among all treatments. From the above results, it is recommended that optimum application level of dicamba herbicide was $0.75{\sim}1.0{\ell}/ha$ for efficient control of Abutilon avicennae and for silage corn production without herbicide injury.

A field experiment was carried out to determine the optimum application level of dicamba herbicide for efficient control of Calystegia japonica in silage corn field. Six treatments of application levels (0 ; control, $0.75{\ell},\;1.0{\ell},\;1.25{\ell},\;1.5{\ell},\;and\;2.0{\ell}/ha$) were arranged at National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon in 1995. The hybrid silage corn was DK 729, and dicamba herbicide was applied at 5~6 leaf stage of corn. The growth of corn was poor in control plot, and the days for tasseling and silking were delayed 1~4 days when compared with the plots of herbicide application. The control efficiency of Calystegia japonica was excellent as 74.3~94.6% in the plots of dicamba application. A slight injury of herbicide was observed at early stage of corn when applied at $1.25{\ell}$ and $1.5{\ell}$ of dicamba per ha, and severe injury was found at $2.0{\ell}$ of dicamba. Forage dry matter(DM) yield, and length of ear in the plots of dicamba treatments were significantly higher than those of control. The DM yield of control(4,866kg/ha) was only about 30% of dicamba treatment plot (14,960~16,340kg/ha). However, there was no yield difference among dicamba application level. The percentage of ear to total DM yield was ranged from 33.6 to 39.4%. With application of herbicide, the contents of crude protein and nitrogen free extract were increased, and that of crude fiber was decreased in stover. However, nutritive value of corn ear was very similar among all treatments, regardless of herbicide treatment. From the above results, it is recommended that optimum application level of dicamba herbicide was $0.75{\sim}1.0{\ell}/ha$ for efficient control of Calystegia japonica and for silage corn production without herbicide injury.

This study was done to investigate the interplanting effects of corn, when a corn hybrid with tillers (IK derivaties) was interplanted with a corn hybrid without tillers(Jinjoo Ok). The interplanting ratios of two hybrids, IK and Jinjoo Ok, were 1 to 1, 1 to 2, 1 to 3, 2 to 1, and 3 to 1. The interp1anting effects were compared with monoculture for major agronomic characteristics. 1. The plant height was increased when interplanted regardless of the interplanting ratios of the two hybrids. The general growth of IK hybrid was a little hindered when the interplanting ratio of Jinjoo Ok hybrid increased. 2. The number of tillers produced by the IK hybrid increased until 40 days after emergence and appeared to increase as the interplanting ratio of IK hybrid increased. 3. When monocultured, the fresh weight of IK hybrid per 10a was 8,096kg and and 6,677kg at silking and dough stages, respectively and these were 77%, 53% over the fresh weight of Jinjoo Ok at the sarne stages. When IK and Jinjoo Ok hybrids were interplanted in 1 to 1 ratio, the fresh weight of IK was 20% higher than that of Jinjoo Ok monocultured. 4. The highest grain yield per 10a was obtained from the Jinjoo Ok hybrid monocultured and the yield was 434kg. Even the interplanting ratios between IK and Jinjoo Ok were 1 to 1 and 1 to 3, the grain yield of Jinjoo Ok was 16% and 13% over the IK, respectively. 5. Root and stalk lodging of IK hybrid was 29% when monocultured and seemed to increase as the interplanting ratio of Jinjoo Ok increased. The lowest lodging was found when the interplanting ratio of IK and Jinjoo Ok was 1 to 1. 6. Stem diameter of IK hybrid was also decreased as the interplanting ratio of Jinjoo Ok increased. The ear height of IK was lowered as the interplanting ratio of IK was increased. The two hybrids tested seemed to have tolerance to the black streaked dwarf virus(BSDV).

Yanganok, a new single cross variety, was developed by the maize breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2012. This hybrid, which has a high yield of grain was produced by crossing two inbred lines, KS164 and KS163. KS164 is the seed parent and KS163 is the pollen parent of Yanganok. It is a yellow-orange intermediate maize hybrid (Zea mays L.). After a preliminary yield trial and advanced yield trial of Yanganok (Suwon180) in Suwon for 2 years, a regional yield trial was carried out for its growth characteristics, and yields were determined at 4 different locations from 2009 to 2012, with the exception of 2010. It was named 'Yanganok'. The silking date of Yanganok is 2 days earlier than that of the check hybrid, Kwangpyeongok. Plant height of Yanganok is similar to Kwangpyeongok, but its ear height ratio is higher than that of Kwangpyeongok. It has resistance to lodging. Stay-green features of Yanganok are similar to those of Kwangpyeongok. The ear ratio of Yanganok is similar to Kwangpyeongok. It has moderate resistance to southern leaf blight (Bipolaris maydis) and strong resistance to northern leaf blight (Exserohilum turcicum). It has moderate resistance to black streaked dwarf virus (BSDV), ear lot and corn borer. The dry matter yield of Yanganok, 17.45 ton/ha, was similar to that of Kwangpyeongok. The total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield of Yanganok, 11.96 ton/ha, was similar to that of Kwangpyeongok. The grain yield of Yanganok, 8.32 ton/ha was similar to that of Jangdaok. Seed production of Yanganok went well due to a good match during crossing between the seed parent, KS164, and the pollen parent, KS163, in Yeongwol, and F1 seed yield was 1.79 ton/ha. Yanganok would be a suitable cultivar to all plain areas in the Korean peninsula.

This study was carried out to isolate and identify the maysin and related flavonoid analogues in corn silks. Silks were covered with silk bag to prevent pollination and were sampled at 3-5 days after silking. The silks were filled with 100% MeOH and stored at $0^{\circ}C$ until analysis. The MeOH extracts of corn silks were filtered and concentrated at 35-4$0^{\circ}C$. The ${CH}_2$${Cl}_2$ was added on the concentrated aqueous solution to remove the chlorophyll and lipids. The Cis open column (25mm$\times$54 cm) was washed and activated with serial treatment of 500$m\ell$ of 100% MeOH(twice)longrightarrow75% MeOH longrightarrow50% MeOHlongrightarrow30% MeOHlongrightarrow100% $H_2$O(2 times). The concentrated aqueous solution was applied to the $C_{18}$ column and washed with $H_2O$ several times to remove the sugars and water soluble pigments. Neochlorogenic acid, chlorogenic acid and 4-caffeoylquinic acid were eluted with 10% MeOH, and rhamosyl isoorientin was eluted with 30% MeOH, but maysin was eluted with 50% MeOH from the $C_18$ open column. Collected fractions were analyzed with HPLC by using revers-phase Ultras-phere $C_{18}$ column (4.6$\times$250mm, 5$\mu\textrm{m}$) and $H_2$O (10% MeOH containing 0.1% $H_3$${PO}_4$)/MeOH (100% MeOH containing 0.1% H$_3$PO$_4$) linear gradient from 20% to 90% MeOH for 35 minutes, a flow rate of 1 $m\ell$/min and detection at 340nm. The selected fractions were concentrated and applied to the silicic acid column. Maysin was eluted with 500$m\ell$ of 100% ethyl acetate from the silicic acid column for the first purification, and the purity of collected fractions was about 75%, but the purity from the second purification with the Cis column (1/2 $\times$ 43") was greater than 95%. FAB-MS spectral data was obtained with VG7O-VSEQ VG analytical fast atom bombardment mass (UK). $^1$H-NMR and $^{13}$ C-NMR data were obtained with Bruker DPX 400 MHz NMR spectrometers (German) in DMSO-d$_{6}$ at 400 and 100 MHz, respectively.vely.

Pyeongangok, a new single cross variety, is an yellow dent maize hybrid (Zea mays L.) developed by the maize breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2011. This hybrid, which has a high yield of grain and dry matter, was produced by crossing two inbred lines, KS160 and KS155. KS160 is the seed parent and KS155 is the pollen parent of Pyeongangok. Silking date of Pyeongangok is 2 days earlier than that of check hybrid, Jangdaok, and equal to that of another check hybrid, Kwangpyeongok. Plant height of Pyeongangok is longer than that of Jangdaok and similar to that of Kwangpyeongok. Ear numbers per 100 plants of Pyeongangok is more than that of Jangdaok. Ear length of Pyeongangok is shorter than that of Jangdaok. 100 seeds weight of Pyeongangok is lighter than that of Jangdaok. Ear rate of Pyeongangok is lower than that of Kwangpyeongok. Stay-green of Pyeonganok is not greatly different with that of Kwangpyeongok. It has moderately resistance to southern corn leaf blight (Bipolaris maydis), black streaked dwarf virus (BSDV) and corn borer. It has strong resistance to northern corn leaf blight (Exserohilum turcicum). It has resistance to lodging. Pyeongangok was evaluated for the yields of grain and dry matter at four locations from 2009 to 2011. The yield of Pyeongangok in grain was 7.66 ton/ha. The yield of Pyeongangok in dry matter was 19.80 ton/ha. The yield of Pyeongangok in total digestible nutrient (TDN) was 13.32 ton/ha. Seed production of Pyeongangok has gone well due to a good match during crossing between the seed parent, KS160, and the pollen parent, KS155, in Yeongwol.
A sweet corn hybrid, Honey Bantam, was planted on 24 May, 1984 in a silty clay loam soil to investigate the effects of polyethylene(P.E.) mulch and different levels and placements of Nitrogen(N) on soil properties and sweet corn growth. A split-split plot design with three replications was employed; P.E. mulch and bare soil were main plot, N levele of 8, 12, 16, and 20 kg/10a were subplot, and band and broadcast of fertilizers were sub-subplots. At early growth stage soil temperature under P.E. mulch was higher than that in bare soil by 5-10$^{\circ}C$, but the differences decreased as plant growth advanced. Soil hardness increased with soil depth while P.E. mulch reduced soil hardness probably by holding high soil moisture. Soil pH decreased up to the 6th week after planting and then increased in bare soil, but it contineously decreased up to the 8th weeks under P.E. mulch regardless N levels and placements. Electrical conductivity(EC) of soil increased up to the 6th weeks after planting and then decreased in all treatments except broadcast of fertilizers under P.E. mulch where EC increased contineously. Generally, soil EC under P.E. mulch was higher than that in broadcast. Broadcast of fertilizers did not affect emergence of seedlings in all N levels under P.E. mulch and bare soil, but band of fertilizers at all N levels under P.E. mulch and higher levels of N in bare soil reduced emergence rate significantly. Percent stand was possitively correlated with soil EC and it strongly influenced the number of marketable ears. Plant growth was enhanced and silking date was earlier by 14-19 days under P.E. mulch compared to bare soil probably due to increased soil moisture, reduced soil hardness and higher soil temperature.
A sweet corn hybrid, Golden Cross Bantam 70, was grown at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20kg/10a of nitrogen (N) under the transparent P. E. film mulch to find the best yield evaluation method. Culm length, ear height, number of tillers increased and silking date was earlier by 1-2 days with increased N level. Leaf area index of main culm at harvest increased with increased N level. Marketable ears were divided into two classes according to the whole sale market price; the frist grade of which husked ear weight over 150g (unhusked ear weight 230g) and the second grade of which husked ear weight between 100 and 150g (unhusked ear weight between 180 and 230g). Average length, thickness, and weight of both grades of marketable ears were not different among the N levels. The proportion of the first grade increased with increased N level. However, total number and weight of marketable ears and gross income per 10a calculated considering weight and number of ears increased with increased N level. There were highly positive correlations between gross income and ear number or ear weight per l0a. The number and weight of marketable ears were underestimated at high N levels compared with gross income. Dry matter yield of stover ranged 740-963kg/10a and increased with increased N level with 20. 8-24.5% dry matter content. Rice black-streaked dwarf virus infection rate was 11.8-15.0%, but it was not related to N level. N concentration in ear was similar but that in stover increased with increased N level. Total N uptake increased but N recovery decreased with increased N level.
