The effects of different feeding regimes on the compensatory growth of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus were investigated. Seven treatments with triplicates of different feeding regimes were conducted, as follows: (1) fed twice a day 6 days a week for 8 weeks; (2) starved for 1 week, then fed twice a day 6 days a week for 3 weeks; (3) starved for 2 weeks, then fed twice a day 6 days a week for 6 weeks; (4) starved for 5 days, then fed twice a day for 9 days; (5) starved for 10 days, then fed twice a day for 18 days; (6) starved for 2 days, then fed twice a day for 5 days, starved for another 3 days, and fed twice a day 4 days; and (7) starved for 4 days, then fed twice a day for 10 days, starved for another 6 days, and fed twice a day for 8 days. Forty fish averaging 12.5 g, were hand-fed to satiation according to the designated feeding schedule. Fish from the control group gained more weight than those from any other group. Feeding efficiency did not vary among treatments. In summary, olive flounder subjected to fasting with different feeding regimes did not fully compensate growth compared to fish fed for 8 weeks without fasting. In addition, the less that fasted groups were subsequently fed, the lower their compensatory growth.
A study on comparative efficacy and in vitro activity of fresh cow urine and cow dung for controlling Sclerotinia rot caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum of cucumber was carried out following mycelial growth inhibition test, treated and untreated sclerotia with these organic matters at different days of incubation. Results showed that cow urine suppressed more effectively the mycelial growth even after 5 days of incubation in comparison to cow dung. The highest inhibition 75.9% of mycelial growth was recorded in cow dung potato dextrose agar(CUPDA) after 3 days of incubation and least 22.7% was in cow dung potato dextrose agar(CUPDA) after same days of incubation. Mycelial growth from sclerotia of S. sclerotiorum was also influenced by PDA medium mixed with cow urine and cow dung. After 6 days of incubation in CUPDA mycelial growth was only 12.9 mm whereas in CDPDA and PDA the corresponding growth at the same time were 65.8 mm and 80.0 mm. Treated sclerotia of the selected fungus with cow urine had a very effective role on suppression of mycelial growth than that of untreated one. No mycelial growth was observed up to 4 days in treated sclerotia with cow urine. After 5 days only 0.9 mm mycelial growth was measured in treated sclerotia, while in case of untreated sclerotia the growth was 42.6 mm. Application of cow urine and cow dung on growing plants inoculated with the pathogen at different concentrations also proved their inhibitive effects.

Growth characteristics and changes of pigment content of purple sweet potato (PSP) during growth were investigated. Vine length of PSP was increased to the maximum length of 130 cm after 100 days of growth. Numbers of branches and nodes were increased to the maximum of 21and 550, respectively, after 120 days of growth. Vine weight was also increased to the maximum of 4,384 kg/10a after 120 days of growth, while the weight of marketable root was increased continuously to the end of the growth period of 150 days to reach the production of 1,875 kg/10a. Uniquely considerable amount of anthocyanin pigment has been developed in both skin and flesh of young roots harvested after 40 days of growth. The pigment content was increased slowly until 140 days of growth then decreased. This fact indicates that the best time for harvesting of PSP is 140 days after planting.

Growth and development of a plant over a growing season is closely related to the daily accumulation of heat. Heat unit measured by accumulated growing degree days (GDD) is becoming increasingly popular to estimate the growth of a plant or even in insect. GDD or heat accumulation per day is measured by calculating average daily temperature and then subtracting the base temperature below which growth does not occur. Heat accumulation per day is added for the desired period and accumulated GDD is determined. The present study was conducted in five seasons in an established garden with K-2, S-36 and V-1 mulberry varieties belonging to Morus indica L. grown under completely irrigated condition at the farm of CSRTI, Mysore during 2001 - 2002. Plants were pruned in each season and the growth of the plant measured by total shoot length and fresh leaf yield was recorded at an interval of 5 days starting from 30 days of pruning (DAP) to 70 days when all the plants were pruned. The accumulated GDD for the corresponding days were recorded and used for analysis. Accumulated growing degree days (GDD) have been found to be perfectly correlated with both growth and yield in all the seasons in all the varieties studied. The high $R^2$ values indicated a strong relationship between the accumulated GDD and, growth and yield of mulberry.
The growth of flue-cured tobacco was analyzed with the mathematical treatment. The results are summarized as followings: 1. The growth curve was fitted to the quadratic polynomial equation in improved-mulching cultivation, blot to the Gompertz equation in the other cultivations. 2. The initial point of the maximum growth phase for dry weight was about 50 days after transplanting in improved-mulching cultivation, but about 40 days in the other cultivations, and the maximum growth period was for 25 days in all cultivations. 3. The growth rate of the maximum growth period in dry weight decreased in the order of improved-mulching cultivation, mulching cultivation, and non-mulching cultivation. 4. A relative growth amount in the maximum growth period was higher in later sowing. 5. The length of maximum growth was 5 days shorter in leaf area than in dry weight. The maximum growth phase was 7 days earlier in leaf area than in dry weight.

In order to construct an artificial cultivation of Nostoc flagelliforme on solid medium, we attempted to assess the viability of approaches, which utilized either BG-11 agar or sand medium using both sterile and non-sterile algal segments. In the trial in which the BG -11 agar medium was inoculated with the non-sterile algal segments, the algae exhibited the rapid growth in the initial 4 days of cultivation. However, after 4 days of cultivation, the growth rate of the algae slowed, and the algal growth was completely stopped by 7 days of cultivation. When the BG -11 medium was inoculated with the sterile algal segments, the algae exhibited the rapid growth for a longer period of 8 days, reaching a length of 24.9 mm. The growth rate during this period was measured to be $24.5\%$. After the 8 days of cultivation, the algal growth rate began to slow and had almost stopped by the 13 days of cultivation. On the other hand, when the sterile algal segments were inoculated onto a sand plate, the algal segments decomposed, reaching total decomposition after 11 days of cultivation. By way of contrast, the desiccation treatment samples continued to grow for 14 days of cultivation. After 14 days of cultivation, the algae achieved a length of 26.1 mm, with a growth rate of $30.6\%$. Our results indicate that periodic desiccation may constitute an effective strategy for the prevention of algal decomposition.
Hair growth effects of Sangmosu have been evaluated in C57BL/6 mice. Animals were topically treated with Sangmosu (50 or $100{\;}{\mu}l/mouse$) for 40 days on the back of shaved area. Twenty days after treatment, hair growth effects were significantly observed in both female and male mice. There was no sex difference although 30 days after treatment female mice were shown to be more effective at the dose of $50{\;}{\mu}l/mouse$ than males. These data demonstrate that Sangmosu is very effective in hair growth effects in animals and thus it may be applicable to humans.
This study was investigated the effort of growth and gonadal development in olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus exposed to PCBs Effluent Allowance Concentration, 3.0 ppb in Korea. Total length, body weight and weight gam of fish were no significant differences between two treatments (control: T.L.-110.0 mm, T.W.-9.61 g: treatment: T.L.-112.8 mm, T.W.-9.68 g), however, weight gain of fish unexposed to PCBs wat observed to increase gradually from 100 days after hatching (30 days after treatment). In the indifferentiated gonad to the juvenile stage, the differentiation of the ovary occured at 60 days after hatching (20 days after treatment) and that of the testis occured at 70 days after hatching (30 days after treatment) in two groups. In the ovary, the oogonia and ovarian lamellar appeared 130 days after hatching (50 days after treatment). The spermatogonia and resticular lobule of the testis were observed at 130 days after hatching (50 days after treatment). Testicular cyst appeared 140 days after hatching (60 days After treatment). There was no difference on the development of ovary and testis. There was no obvious difference of sex ratios. Therefore, These results considerate that PCBs have any effect for growth and gonadal development, but a little act for early growth in olive flounder.
Four hundred and eighty broiler chicks of both sexes were obtained from commercial hatchery (Hubbard) and raised on floor pens. All chicks were allowed free access to food from 0 to 7 and 20 to 56 days of age. At 7 days of age, all broilers were weighed individually, and divided into five groups as follows: 1. feed ad libitum as the control; 2. allowed free access to food 3 days and starved 1 day ($3{\times}1$); 3. allowed free access to food 2 days and starved 1 day ($2{\times}1$); 4. allowed free access to food 1 day and starved 1 days ($1{\times}1$) and; 5. allowed free access to food 2 days and starved 2 days ($2{\times}2$). Broilers were restricted for 12 days (d 7 through 17) of a 56-day trial. Broilers were fed a commercial starter diet (crude protein 23.8% and ME 3,070 kcal/kg) for 21 days, and commercial finisher diet (crude protein 20% and ME 3,160 kcal/kg) from 22 to 56 days of age. Although there was compensatory growth in some groups, (the $1{\times}1$ female group, and the $3{\times}1$ and $2{\times}1$ male grous), its level was not sufficient to achieve normal body weight at market age. There was sexual dimorphism for accelerated growth as well as differences in the ability to achieve a complete compensation of growth to the weight, feed conversion ratio, and body composition of ad libitum chicks. Early feed restriction could be used to reduce production cost because of the lower fed conversion ratio, mortality rate and the amount of starter diet consumed by broilers. The response of chicks to early feed restriction might depend on the degree of feed restriction, the method of feed restriction, duration of feed restriction, and sexes.
The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of early feed restriction on growth, fat accumulation and meat composition in unsexed broiler chickens. Five hundred 7-day old unsexed broiler chickens were distributed into ten treatment groups with 5 pens of 10 broilers each group. One group was fed ad libitum as the control group and other nine groups were fed 25% ad libitum for 3, 6 or 9 days, 50% ad libitum for 3, 6 or 9 days, and 75% ad libitum for 3, 6 or 9 days, respectively. Thereafter, they were fed ad libitum to 56 days of age. The present results showed that broilers showed compensatory growth when they were restrict-refed. Feed conversion ratio was significantly lower in broilers fed 25% ad libitum for 9 days (p<0.05). Triglyceride concentration of serum was significantly lower in restricted unsexed broilers (p <0.01), whereas cholesterol concentration was not significantly different. Abdominal fat was significantly lower in broilers fed 25% ad libitum for 9 days, 50% ad libitum for 3 days and 75% ad libitum for 6 or 9 days (p<0.05). Moisture and protein contents of meats were not significantly affected. Ash content of meat was significantly higher in restricted broilers. Fat content of meat was lower in broilers fed 25% ad libitum for 9 days, 75% ad libitum for 3 to 9 days. In conclusion, broilers showed compensatory growth when they were restrict-refed at an early age. In order to achieve the success of early feed restriction (namely reduce fat accumulation and improve feed conversion ratio with comparable body weight at market age), unsexed broilers should be fed at level of 25 ad libi=tum for 9 days starting at 7 days of age.
