This study aimed to examine the effect of different fruit-loads on fruit yield, quality, and plant growth of 'Seolhyang' strawberry. Fruit loads were adjusted from the first to the fourth flower cluster so that the number of fruits became 20, 25, and 30, and non-flower thinning of some was made. The more the number of fruits per plant was, the greater the total yield obtained, but marketable yield decreased and non-marketable yield increased. Compared to the treatment whose fruit load was adjusted, the control with non-flower thinning had more fruit yield in the first and second flower clusters but tended to have less fruit yield in the third and fourth flower clusters. The lower the fruit load was, the more soluble solids content of fruits increased. The lower the fruit load of a flower cluster was, the faster its harvest time reached. Harvest of fruit load of 20 was faster by 10 days in the second and fourth flower clusters relative to the control. On November 24, 2012, flowering thinning of the first flower cluster was made. On March 7, 2013, fruit dry weight of the second flower cluster was most heavy in the control. Dry weight of roots decreased in the control and the fruit load of 30 compared to November 24. On April 9, fruit dry weight of the third flower cluster did not have significant difference according to fruit load, however the more the fruit load was, the smaller dry weight of leaf, root, and crown became, which were vegetative organs. On May 12, the more the fruit load, the smaller leaf area and dry weight of vegetative organs and differences from varying fruit-loads became considerable in later period of growth. Appropriate fruit load of 'Seolhyang' strawberry were from 20 to 25. Maintaining balance between vegetative and fruit growth by adjusting fruit load is very important for stable fruit production.
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of day-length extension treatment using LED lighting (blue, green, red, or 3 mixed) on vegetative growth and flowering of freesia 'Yvonne', in comparison to that using glow lamps and metal halide lamps. Lighting treatments were imposed from 5 PM to 8 PM for 150 days from after flower bud differentiation to flowering end. For the period from leaf emergence to floral bud formation, no light source affected plant height but the number of leaves was decreased by the metal halide lamp. The highest SPAD value in the flower bud developing period occurred in the metal halide lamp treatment. The time of flowering was advanced by blue or green LED treatment compared to the no lighting control. The green LED lighting advanced flowering by 6 and 8 days compared to no lighting and metal halide lamp treatment, respectively. The blooming period tended to be shortened by the red LED treatment. As for the flower characteristics of 'Yvonne', floret length and width, and the weight of cut flowers were highest in the metal halide lamp treatment. Red LED decreased corm width and weight of 'Yvonne' while glow lamp decreased height and weight. Starch contents in corm were not influenced by the lighting source. Our results indicate that the green LED lighting advanced the time of flowering and the metal halide lamp was good for cut-flower quality.
The aim of this study was to establish the condition of regeneration for white balloon flower (Platycodon grandiflorum DC. cv. Jangback) and to manage for the raising of seedling with in vitro regenerated plants. It was examined that 0.5 mg/L of NAA and 1.0 mg/L of BA was the best composition for the callus and shoot induction (up to 600%). NAA was better than IBA for the induction of root and it took 16.9 days for the induction of rooting on the MS soild media containing 0.5 mg/L of NAA and the final rooting ratio was up to 75%. Out of 5 different bed soils purchased from local market, "Tosil" was identified to be the best for the acclimation and growth of in vitro regenerated balloon flower. In detail, on 8 weeks after planting of in vitro regenerated plants in pots containing "Tosil" bed soils, the plant hight was increased up to 2-fold (12.8 cm), 3.5-fold (27) for the number of leaf and 1.5-fold (4.5 cm) for the leaf length when compared to the other four bed soils, respectively. Our preliminary results indicate that it is possible to prevent the occurrence of blue balloon flower in the massive cultivated area of white balloon flower by providing the seedlings raised from in vitro regenerated plants.
'Double Shine', a cultivar of Gypsophila paniculata was newly developed for the cut flowers by Jeollabuk-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services. It has morphological characteristics of the spreading plant type, double florets of many petals and two pistils, emarginate petal tip and cup shaped calyx. Also 'Double Shine' has several traits such as strong flower stalk, bright colored flower, narrow branching angle and more or less resistance to powdery mildew and pest injury. Furthermore, 'Double Shine' produced higher primary branches, and longer flower stalk length with internodal length and than did a check variety 'Bristol Fairy' during summer cultivation in subalpine areas. Blooming of 'Double Shine' was delayed by 16 days, its floret had broader width, compared to 'Bristol Fairy'. Moreover, 'Double Shine' produced normal flowers with two pistils and 8.5 stamens, with little production of malformed flowers in the high temperature condition.

A new gerbera cultivar 'Sunny Lemon' was released by the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 2009. A cross was made between 'Pavlov' and 'Patrick' with pink and semi-double in 2006. After investigation of the characteristics for four years (from 2006 to 2009), it was selected for the use of cut flower. 'Sunny Lemon' is a vigorous cultivar with yellow flower color (RHS Y9C), brown center and semi-double. The average flower diameter is 11.0 cm. And inner ray floret and disc diameter are 7.63 cm and 2.59 cm, respectively. Days to first blooming are 84.5, approximately 2 weeks earlier than the standard cultivar. It produces a large yield with continuous supply of cut flowers and has adequate peduncle height. We believe that 'Sunny Lemon' has a great potential for expanding cultivated area of domestic gerbera cultivars and increasing farmers' income.

This study was conducted to investigate effects of nutrient solution pH control agent and foliar spray of ethephon on the reduction of stem inside-cavity and improvement of flower quality in chrysanthemum 'Baekma'. Changes of pH in nutrient solution as affected by the kind of pH control agent showed more settled pattern in the plot of KOH treatment than in others. Plant growth and development such as cut flower length, leaf numbers, cut flower weight and petal number were the greatest in the plot of KOH. However, the size and area of stem cavity was large in KOH rather than $KHCO_3$. As changes in the absorbing patterns of mineral elements as affected by nutrient solution pH control agent in closed system, contents of total nitrate, phosphorus, potassium and calcium by $KHCO_3$ was absorbed into the plant less than KOH, so that it remained a lot of mineral element residues rather than KOH in closed system. Plant growth as affected by the foliar spray of ethephon showed growth retardation effect in the plot of solution diluted to 1 : 500 and growth promotion effect in the plot of solution diluted to 1 : 1,000 or 1 : 2,000. The number of petals was the best in the plot of foliar spray of ethephon solution diluted to 1 : 1,000 before flowering at 45 days showing 331 petals compared to control showing 302 petals. The size and area of stem cavity as affected the foliar spray of ethephon was smaller 1 mm and 7%, respectively, in the plot of solution diluted to 1 : 2,000 before flowering at 30 days than in control. Therefore, treating pH stabilization using KOH after floral initiation stage with the foliar spray of ethephon solution diluted to 1 : 2,000 before flowering at 30 days would help to reduce stem cavity size and improve flower quality in hydroponically grown chrysanthemum 'Baekma'.

This study was conducted to reveal the effect of some meterological factors on the weight of cone and seed per cone in Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis SIEB. et ZUCC.). The weight of cone and seed per cone for 7 years from 1992 to 1998 on 45(1992) year-old trees and some meterological factors for 9 years from 1990 to 1998 were surveyed in Hongcheon-Gun region, Gangweon-Do. Simple correlations and multiple regression between weight of cone and seed per cone and some meterological factors were analyzed. The results obtained from the above experiments were as follows: 1. Positive correlations were found between weight of cone and monthly mean temperature of February in flower bud differentiation year. number of annual hoarfrost days of the cone production year monthly mean temperature of may in the cone production year, as July respectively. There were negative correlations between weight of cone and monthly mean temperature of august in the flowering year, wind speed of April in the flower bud differentiation year, number of clear days of december in the flowering year, number of annual cloudy days of the flowering year, number of precipitation days of june in the flowering year, number of annual precipitation days of the flowering year, number of annual cloudy days of March in the cone production year. number of annual cloudy days from march to October in the flowering year as well as number of precipitation from march to october in the flowering year. 2. Positive correlation between weight of seed per cone and number of hours with sunshine duration of June in the flowering year, the percentage of sunshine duration of June in the flowering year, number of clear days of June in the flowering year. monthly mean temperature of may in the cone production year. as well as monthly mean temperature of July in the cone production year were found. Negative correlations were recognized between weight of seed per cone and monthly mean temperature of January in the flowering year, monthly mean temperature of august in the flowering year, wind speed of april in the flower bud differentiation year, number of annual cloudy days of the flowering year, number of precipitation days of June in the flowering year, number of annual cloudy days from March to October in the flowering year as well as number of precipitation from march to October in the flowering year.

In order to determine the relationship between water content and flower qualities of oriental hybrid lily cv. 'Siberia' cut flower, flowers were subjected to dry and cold storage at $5^{\circ}C$ for 3, 6, and 12 days and subsequently exposed to ambient temperature ($26^{\circ}C$) in bottles with water for up to 16 days. Flowers stored at $22^{\circ}C$ in dry condition for 3 days were used as the control. Changes in fresh weight, moisture content, water balance, flowering stages, osmolality and vase life of cut flowers were observed. Flowers treated with cold and dry storage had higher moisture content compared to control sample. However, this trend was evident only for 3-day cold and dry stored sample during the whole storage period. The fresh weight of cut flowers increased gradually when the samples were transferred to ambient temperature in water bottles and then declined steadily before reaching the peak in between 6-8 days of vase life. However, the changes of fresh weight of control sample were substantially faster than samples pre-treated with cold and dry storage. This was also correlated with the water balance of cut flower as it reached the minus (-) value in 6-8 days of vase life at ambient temperature. Cut lily flowers showed high osmolality values corresponding with the duration of dry storage regardless of low or higher temperature. However, osmolality had no effect on vase life since flower stem absorbed water rapidly at the end of dry storage period. Our vase life results suggest that cold and dry storage of lily cut flowers for a certain period could ensure longer vase life at ambient temperature. It was observed that prolonging the storage period at cold and dry condition for more than a week significantly increased bud abortion, reduced longevity of flowers and reduced the vase life of cut flowers. On the other hand, the shorter cold and dry storage treatment delayed the bud opening and senescence of the flowers, thus, slowering the normal maturation and aging. Results indicated that dry and cold storage at $5^{\circ}C$ for 3 days was effective in maintaining and preserving overall quality and vase life at ambient condition of oriental hybrid lily cut flowers.
To investigate tile effects of growth characteristics on the yield, price per Kg, chemical contents and physical properties in Burley tobacco, ten varieties including Burley 21 were tested in this study. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1 Forty to fifty days after transplanting, CCR (Crop Growth Rate) was the highest. RCR (Relative Growth Rate) increased up to 40 days, but decreased 50 days when maturation began. High- yielding varieties showed high CCR and RCR till 60 days. 2. Total alkaloid content of cured leaf increased about three times than that of topping stage, but the increased rates were some what different among varieties. 3. Leaf area, stalk diameter, stalk height and days to flower showed positive correlations to yield, whereas leaf thickness and weight per unit leaf area showed negative. 4 Varieties which are high in cured leaf weight ratio and weight per unit leaf thickeners showed relatively poor quality. 5 Nitrogen content was high in leafy and larger stalk diameter variety. 6. There are positive correlation between weight per unit leaf thickness and filling power. The time of combustion was positively correlated to leaf thickness and weight Per unit leaf. 7. It can be concluded that many characteristics are related to the yield, but not quality. It is, there fore, easy to Predict tile yield, but difficult to forecast the qualiffy.
A new bright yellow gerbera (Gerbera hybrida Hort.) cultivar, 'Joyful', was released by the Flower Research Institute of Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research & Extension Service in 2013. 'Joyful' was developed in Changwon from 2005 to 2006 and is a cross between 'Chowoo', a semi-double type gerbera cultivar with yellow-orange colored flowers, and 'Focus', a semi-double type cultivar with yellow colored flowers. The characteristics trials for selection were conducted from 2007 to 2009. 'Joyful' has large, semi-double type flowers with yellow (RHS, 12-A) ray florets and a brown central part. It also has a stable flower shape, strong peduncles, and a vase life of 12.8 days. The average flower yield of 'Joyful' was determined in greenhouse trials carried out from 2008 to 2010 and is 49.2 stems per plant per year. 'Joyful' was demonstrated to be a new cultivar based on ploidy tests and RAPD analysis and was registered (Grant No. 4574) to the Korea Seed and Variety Service (KSVS) for commercialization in 2013.
