  • Many techniques have been proposed for mapping from XML to relations, but most techniques did not negotiate the semantics of XML data. The semantics is important to validate storage, query optimization, modification anomaly in process of schema design. Specially, functional dependencies are an important part of database theory, also it is basis of normalization for relational table in BCNF. This paper propose a new technique that reflect functional dependencies to store relation mapped from XML based on XML Schema. The technique can reduce storage redundancy and can keep up content and structure with constraint described by functional dependencies.

  • The Entity-Relationship (E-R) model is widely used not only to increase understanding between user and designer, but also to model the relationship of real world data appropriately when designing database system in many application areas. It should be then transformed into an Object-Oriented database model which gives good merits to represent and manipulate data efficiently. Therefore, a method of transforming an E-R model into an Object-Oriented database model should be studied, but without losing any semantics of concept for the E-R model. This paper not only deals with transformation rules taking as input the elements of E-R model and delivering the elements of an Object-Oriented database model, but also improves the concept of generalization and aggregation inheritance. The paper also presents a method of transformation of relationship depending on these rules. The proposed method that obtains Object-Oriented database schema from an E-R model with preserving the properties of the E-R model is shown with examples. The method presented is able to be used to the logical database design.

  • The Conventional database management system is not applicable because of their inadequate performance and difficulty of CAD database that is dependant to hierarchical structure and to repeat accesses of large data. For effective management and easy tool integration of CAD database, hierarchy Interface System(HIS) is designed and GROCO(Graph Representation fOr Complex Objects) Model is presented. Hierarchy Interface System which is composed of two subsystems of a configurator and a converter is designed for the interface between a conventional database management system and CAD tools. GROCO Model is a directed cyclic graph having five node-types for representing semantics and supports efficiently CAD database characters having a hierarchical structure of complex objects.

  • Object-oriented database systems represent the complex data model of real- world and manage the complex data. An object manager handles the manipulation and access of all objects in object-oriented database management systems. In this paper, we not only propose the design rules of an object manager interface(OMI) which is specified the calling function and the semantics of an object manager for object-oriented query processing, but also implement the OMI based on the rules. The OMI implemented supports the independently developing environment of query processing and object management modules, and can be applicable to various applications, and also provides the efficient access method to users.

  • XML has been established as a de facto standard for representing and exchanging documents, and has been widely used as a logical data model. Using XML as a logical database model, it requires a conceptual model for the semantics that XML has. However, the existing conceptual models, such as Entity Relationship models and UML, have been extended their concepts to express the specific characteristics of XML, but so far, there are no standard models. This paper compares the characteristics of the typical model of conceptual model of XML by Extended Entity Relationship model from the perspective of database field. For this, we propose the requirements that must be met for XML, and on the basis of these requirements, the approaches of each model are compared.

  • Conventional hypermedia systems provide a simple data model based on nodes and link, and give us the limited capability in information retrieval such as browsing and navigating following the links. In this paper, we design and implement a hypermedia system (AHEAD) with enhanced data modeling and querying capability, which are strongly supported in object-oriented database technology. The AHEAD makes it possible to model the accurate data semantics and relationships in application domain, to represent useful information related to nodes and links, and to define the structure and manipulation operations of multimedia data. It also support the various querying capabilities by using modeling information.

  • Although spatial databases support an efficient spatial management on objects in the real world, they have a characteristic that process only spatial information valid at current time, So in case of change in the spatial domain, it is very hard to support an efficient historical management for time-varying spatial information because they delete an old value and then replace with new value that is valid at current time. To solve these problems, there are rapidly increasing of interest for spatiotemporal databases, which serve historical functions for spatial information as well as spatial management functions for an object. However most of them presented in an abstract time-varying spatial phenomenon, but have not presented a concrete policy in spatiotemporal databases. In this paper, we propose a spatiotemporal data model that supports bitemporal time concepts in three dimensional architecture. In the proposed model, not only data types and their operation for object of spatiotemporal databases have been classified, but also mathematical expressions using formal semantics for them have been given. Then, the data structures and their operations based on relational database model as well as object-oriented database model are presented.

  • In this thesis, we present a simple and efficient recovery method, called ARIES/SR(ARIES/Selective Redo) which is based on ARIES(Algorithm for Recovery and Isolation Exploiting Semantics) ARIES performs redo for all updates done by either nonloser transaction or loser transaction, and thus significant overhead appears during restart after a system failure. To reduce this overhead, we propose ARIES/SR recovery algorithm. In this algorithm, to reduce the redo operations, redo is performed, using log record for updates done by only nonloser transaction. Also selective undo is performed. using log record for update done by only loser transaction for reducing recovery operation.

  • We propose an extension to Prolog called the count term for controlling Prolog execution. The purpose is to allow the programmers as well as the users to have greater flexibility in controlling the execution behavior of Prolog programs and for limiting the number of answers or proofs retrieved when Prolog is used as a database query language. Both syntax and operational semantics of the count term are defined. An implementation strategy based on WAM (Warren Abstract Machine) by modifying instructions related to backtracking behavior has been suggested.

  • This paper refers and implements XML Web services, which supports networked interchanges of moving object information. XML Web services are expected to be fundamental building blocks in the move to distributed computing on the Internet. As an interchange format, GML encodes semantics, syntax, and schema of geospatial and geoprocessing-related information resources. It can give great benefits to utilize raw data easily as an XML encoding format does. This paper proposes a full coverage of interoperable location trajectory services consisting of 3 independent modules: a moving object database, a data processing server, and a web services interface module. For communications, SOAP protocols and WSDL documents are used, which can guarantee an interoperability of a system regardless of different platforms and service channels. This paper also designs a GML data format that represents location information of probe cars.
