  • The concectration and distribution of contaminants obtained from a contaminated land investigation or an environmental geochemistry survey constitutes the basis of a decision-making process on environmental policies or of scientific researches. As the quality of data determines the reliability of the result, the investigation plan should be adjusted according to the purpose of the investigation. In general, the effort to improve the data quality had been focused mainly on the QA/QC procedures in laboratories. The rapid progress of analytical instrument has also contributed toward improving the analytical precision to a sacrificable degree. Nevertheless, in many cases, it is not the analytical precision that needs improvement for the better precision of overall measurement process: it is rather during the sampling process in the field that is responsible for the poor precision. To assess the data quality on a measured value, ISO recommends to provide information on "measurement uncertainty" along with the measured value. The measurement uncertainty in an environmental measurement context can be explained as the statistical number that expresses the degree of the uncertainty stemming from the sampling and analytical procedures. There is a cost involved in order to improve the precision of sampling and analytical methods so as to decrease the degree of measurement uncertainty. The economical point of compromise in an investigation planning can be achieved when the allowable degree of uncertainty has been set before-hand. The investigation can then be planned accordingly not to exceed the uncertainty limit. Furthermore, if the measurement uncertainty estimated from the preliminary investigation can be separated into sampling and analytical uncertainties, it can be used as a criterion where the resources for the investigation should be allotted cost-effectively to reinforce the weakest link of the whole investigation process. This paper aims to present a method of estimating the level of measurement uncertainty of a measured contamination concentration at a site used as an example and to show how the estimated uncertainty can be applied to serve the particular purpose of an investigation.

  • It is important to verify that the contracted speed-power performance of a ship is satisfied in sea trials. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published the procedure for measuring and assessing ship speed during sea trials. The results obtained from actual sea conditions inevitably include various uncertainty factors. In this study, double run tests were performed on one container ship to analyze the uncertainty of sea trial on three maximum continuous rating conditions. The uncertainty factors and scale of uncertainty were examined based on the measured raw data during sea trial. The results indicate that the expanded uncertainty for ideal power performance is approximately ±1.4% at 95% confidence level (coverage factor k = 2) and most of the uncertainty factors were because of the shaft power measurement system.

  • Oscillating water column (OWC) type wave power generator system is a power generation system that uses wave energy, a sustainable and renewable energy source. Irregular cycles and wave heights act as factors that make it difficult to secure generation efficiency of the wave power generator system. Recently, research for improving power generation efficiency is being conducted by applying digital twin technology to OWC type wave energy converter system. However, digital twin using sensor data can predict erroneous performance due to uncertainty in the sensor data. Therefore, this study proposes an uncertainty analysis method for sensor data which is used in digital twin to secure the reliability of digital twin prediction results. Uncertainty quantification considering sensor data characteristics and future uncertainty information according to uncertainty propagation were derived mathematically, and confidence interval estimation was performed based on the proposed method.

  • Purpose: This study was to describe the uncertainty, depression, physical symptom, and family support among patients undergoing dialysis. Further, the factors that impact uncertainty were also examined. Methods: A convenience sample of 145 patients who received dialysis was selected. A descriptive correlation study was conducted. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and the collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. Results: The patient who received more than five years of dialysis reported higher levels on inconsistency of uncertainty than patient with less than five years. These latter patients' reported uncertainty was positively correlated with depression, whereas, patients family support was correlated with uncertainty. The group's uncertainty with less than five years of dialysis explained about 13% of the variance. In contrast, variables of education level, family support, and monthly income were predictors of uncertainty and explained 33% of the variation. Conclusion: These results can provide for nursing intervention to facilitate reduction of uncertainty. To provide dialysis period-sensitive nursing intervention for uncertainty among dialysis patient, depression should be considered below five years. While factors such as education level, family support, and monthly income should be taken into account over five years.

  • The purpose of this study was to build a substantive theory about the experience of the maternal uncertainty in childhood chronic illness. The qualitative research method used was grounded theory. The interviewees were 12 mothers who have cared for a child who had chronic illness. The data were collected through in-depth interviews with audiotape recording done by the investigator over a period of nine months. The data were analyzed simutaneously by a constant comparative method in which new data were continuously coded into categories and properties according to Strauss and Corbin's methodology. The 34 concepts were identified as a result of analyzing the grounded data. Ten categories emerged from the analysis. The categories were lack of clarity, unpredictability, unfamiliarity, negative change, anxiety, devotion normalization and burn-out. Causal conditions included : lack of clarity, unpredictability, unfamiliarity and change ; central phenomena : anxiety, being perplexed ; context. seriousness of illness, support ; intervening condition : belief action/interaction strategies devotion, overprotection ; consequences : normalization, burn-out. These categories were synthesized into the core concept-anxiety. The process of experiencing uncertainty was 1) Entering the world of uncertainty, 2) Struggling in the tunnel of uncertainty, 3) Reconstruction of the situation of uncertainty. Four hypotheses were derived from the analysis : (1) The higher the lack of clarity, unpredictability, unfamiliaity, change, the higher the level of uncertainty (2) The more serious the illness and the less the support, the higher the level of uncertainty. (3) The positive believes will influence the devoted care and normalization of the family life. Through this substantive theory, pediatric nurses can understand the process of experiencing maternal uncertainty in childhood chronic illness. Further research to build substantive theories to explain other uncertainties may contribute to a formal theory of how normalization is achieved in the family with chronically ill child.

  • The energy makes the basic element which improves the quality of life with motive power of industry and life. However, using the fossil fuel resources was restricted through it's abuse and exhaustion, and that cause a global warming resultingly. According to the reason, the world increased the interest that are stability and use of new and renewable energy which is clean energy with environment. Therefore, the property data of new and renewable is needed for developing and supplying the energy. In other words, the data of new and renewable energy becomes the standards for supply and evaluation of new and renewable energy with development of industry and technology. Also, the necessity came to the fore as the reference and standards of new and renewable energy data. Therefore, in this study, we evaluate and collect the solar radiation data as the new and renewable data and process the collected data through the standards for valuation. We evaluate uncertainty with standards which are NREL, WMO, and GUM. Whereby the data becomes reference standards data and gains the credibility. For the reliability data, we correct the measuring instrument with correction period. Using the DQMS and SERI QC, we efficiently manage and evaluate the solar radiation data. As a result, we evaluate uncertainty as 1,120 case about 16 area. we achieve credibility of data from evaluated solar radiation data and provide an accurate information to user. The annual average of horizontal radiation presents between 1,484 and 4,577, then the uncertainty evaluates from 163 to 453. The error of uncertainty presents smaller than the measurement values. So, we judge a credibility of data by expression of reliability quantitatively. In additional, the reference standards data which is possible to approach anywhere will be used for the supporting related industry and policy making.

  • Background. Although there have been a great number of research studies based on the model of uncertainty in illness, few studies have considered the appraisal portion of model. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to test the mediating effect of appraisal in the model of uncertainty in illness. Additionally, this study aimed to examine the relationships among uncertainty, symptom severity, appraisal, and anxiety in patients newly diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Methods. This study employed a descriptive correlational and cross-sectional survey design using a face-to-face interview method. Patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation within the previous 6 months prior to data collection were interviewed by Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale-Community Form, appraisal scale, Symptom Checklist-Severity V.3, and State Anxiety Inventory. Results. A total of 81 patients with atrial fibrillation were recruited from two large urban medical centers in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A.. Symptom severity was the significant variable in explaining uncertainty ($\beta$=0.34). Individuals with greater symptom severity perceived more uncertainty. Uncertainty was appraised as a danger rather than opportunity, and those with greater uncertainty appraised a greater danger (p<.0l). While the appraisal of opportunity had the negative relationship with anxiety (r=-0.25), the appraisal of danger was positively associated with anxiety (r=0.78). The measure of goodness of fit (Q) of the model was .7863, and the significant test (X$^2$) for the Q was statistically significant (df =3, p<.00l). Accordingly, the overall mediating model of uncertainty in illness was proven not to be fit to the empirical data of patients with atrial fibrillation. Consequently, the mediating effect of appraisal was not supported by the empirical data of this study. Conclusion. The findings of this study were discussed in terms of their relevance compared with those of previous studies or theoretical framework and the plausible explanations on study findings. Lastly, in order to expand the present body of knowledge on uncertainty in illness model, recommendations for the future nursing studies were included.

  • Positional data of moving objects can be regularly sampled in order to minimize the cost of data collection in LBS. Since position data which are regularly sampled cannot include the changes of position occurred between sampling periods, sampled position data differ from the data predicted by a time parameterized linear function. Uncertain position data caused by these differences make the accuracy of the range queries for present positions diminish in the TPR tree. In this paper, we propose the uncertainty region to handle the range queries for uncertain position data. The uncertainty region is defined by the position data predicted by the time parameterized linear function and the estimated uncertainty error. We also present the weighted recent uncertainty error policy and the kalman filter policy to estimate the uncertainty error. For performance test, the query processor based by the uncertainty region is implemented in the TPR tree. The experiments show that the Proposed query processing methods are more accurate than the existing method by 15%.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to test the mediating effect of uncertainty appraisal and coping style in the relation between uncertainty and anxiety in hospitalized pregnant women diagnosed with preterm labor. Methods: The participants were 105 pregnant women diagnosed with preterm labor in hospitals in Korea. Data were collected from July to October 2017. The measurements included the Uncertainty in Illness Scale, Uncertainty Appraisal Scale, Coping Style Scale, and State Anxiety Inventory. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, an independent t-test, correlation, and multiple regression following the Baron and Kenny method and Sobel test for mediation. Results: The mean score for anxiety was 2.29 out of 4.00 points and for uncertainty it was 2.46 out of 5.00 points. There were significant correlations among uncertainty, uncertainty danger appraisal, uncertainty opportunity appraisal, problem-focused coping, emotion-focused coping, and anxiety. Uncertainty danger appraisal (${\beta}=.64$, p<.001) had a complete mediating effect in the relation between uncertainty and anxiety (Z=4.54, p<.001). Uncertainty opportunity appraisal (${\beta}=-.45$, p<.001) had a complete mediating effect in the relation between uncertainty and anxiety (Z=3.28, p<.001). Emotion-focused coping (${\beta}=-.23$, p=.021) had a partial mediating effect in the relation between uncertainty and anxiety (Z=2.02, p=.044). Conclusion: Nursing intervention programs focusing on managing uncertainty appraisal and improving emotion-focused coping are highly recommended to decrease anxiety in hospitalized pregnant women diagnosed with preterm labor.

  • The paper aims to analyze structure of I/Q data observed from radar and reliably estimate rainfall through quality control of I/Q data that can quantify uncertainty of I/Q data occurring due to resultant errors. Radar rainfall data have strong uncertainty due to various factors influencing quality. In order to reduce this uncertainty, previously enumerated errors in quality need to be eliminated. However, errors cannot be completely eliminated in some cases as seen in random errors, so uncertainty is necessarily involved in radar rainfall data. Multi-Lag Method, one of I/Q data quality control methods, was applied to estimate precipitation with regard to I/Q data of rainfall radar in Mt. Sobaek.
