  • This paper is concerned with the application of the vision control scheme for robot's point placement task in discontinuous trajectory caused by obstacle. The proposed vision control scheme consists of four models, which are the robot's kinematic model, vision system model, 6-parameters estimation model, and robot's joint angles estimation model. For this study, the discontinuous trajectory by obstacle is divided into two obstacle regions. Each obstacle region consists of 3 cases, according to the variation of number of cameras that can not acquire the vision data. Then, the effects of number of cameras on the proposed robot's vision control scheme are investigated in each obstacle region. Finally, the practicality of the proposed robot's vision control scheme is demonstrated experimentally by performing the robot's point placement task in discontinuous trajectory by obstacle.

  • Software defined networking (SDN) is considered to be one of the most promising paradigms in the future. To solve the scalability and performance problem that a single and centralized controller suffers from, the distributed multi-controller architecture is adopted, thus forms multi-domain SDN. In a multi-domain SDN network, it is of great importance to ensure a reliable control plane. In this paper, we focus on the reliability problem of multi-domain SDN against controller failure from perspectives of backup controller deployment and controller replication. We firstly propose a placement algorithm for backup controllers, which considers both the reliability and the cost factors. Then a controller replication mechanism based on shared data storage is proposed to solve the inconsistency between the active and standby controllers. We also propose a shared data storage layout method that considers both reliability and performance. Besides, a fault recovery and repair process is designed based on the controller backup and shared data storage mechanism. Simulations show that our approach can recover and repair controller failure. Evaluation results also show that the proposed backup controller placement approach is more effective than other methods.

  • Measured bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) data have been used to represent complex interaction between lights and surface materials for photorealistic rendering. However, their massive size makes it hard to adopt them in practical rendering applications. In this paper, we propose an adaptive method for B-spline volume representation of measured BRDF data. It basically performs approximate B-spline volume lofting, which decomposes the problem into three sub-problems of multiple B-spline curve fitting along u-, v-, and w-parametric directions. Especially, it makes the efficient use of knots in the multiple B-spline curve fitting and thereby accomplishes adaptive knot placement along each parametric direction of a resulting B-spline volume. The proposed method is quite useful to realize efficient data reduction while smoothing out the noises and keeping the overall features of BRDF data well. By applying the B-spline volume models of real materials for rendering, we show that the B-spline volume models are effective in preserving the features of material appearance and are suitable for representing BRDF data.

  • Optimal sensor placement techniques play a significant role in enhancing the quality of modal data during the vibration based health monitoring of civil structures, where many degrees of freedom are available despite a limited number of sensors. The literature has shown a shift in the trends for solving such problems, from expansion or elimination approach to the employment of heuristic algorithms. Although these heuristic algorithms are capable of providing a global optimal solution, their greatest drawback is the requirement of high computational effort. Because a highly efficient optimisation method is crucial for better accuracy and wider use, this paper presents an improved simulated annealing (SA) algorithm to solve the sensor placement problem. The algorithm is developed based on the sensor locations' coordinate system to allow for the searching in additional dimensions and to increase SA's random search performance while minimising the computation efforts. The proposed method is tested on a numerical slab model that consists of two hundred sensor location candidates using three types of objective functions; the determinant of the Fisher information matrix (FIM), modal assurance criterion (MAC), and mean square error (MSE) of mode shapes. Detailed study on the effects of the sensor numbers and cooling factors on the performance of the algorithm are also investigated. The results indicate that the proposed method outperforms conventional SA and Genetic Algorithm (GA) in the search for optimal sensor placement.

  • The design of a measurement system to perform Harmonic State Estimation (HSE) is a very complex problem. Among the reasons for its complexity are the system size, conflicting requirements of estimator accuracy, reliability in the presence of transducer noise and data communication failures, adaptability to change in the network topology and cost minimization. In particular, the number of harmonic instruments available is always limited. Therefore, a systematic procedure is needed to design the optimal placement of measurement points. This paper presents a new HSE algorithm which is based on an optimal placement of measurement points using Genetic Algorithms (GAs) which is widely used in areas such as: optimization of the objective function, learning of neural networks, tuning of fuzzy membership functions, machine learning, system identification and control. This HSE has been applied to the Simulation Test Power System for the validation of the new HSE algorithm. The study results have indicated an economical and effective method for optimal placement of measurement points using Genetic Algorithms (GAs) in the Harmonic State Estimation (HSE).

  • The paper presents the problem definition of video placement and efficient methods for placing video data on a cluster of video servers. The video placement is to place each of video replicas on one of the servers where the number and location of the servers are already determined. The rejection ratio of user requests is one of most important user-perceive performance measures, so it has been used as a performance criteria in many researches on the VOD system. The objective of our video placement is to achieve the load balancing among servers and the minimization of total network loads. To our experiment, the presented methods show better performance in terms of the rejection ratio of user requests than the methods for video placements in which only either server load balancing or network load minimization is considered. Also, it is observed that considerations on server load balancing is especially important in video placement. To our survey, little research has been published on video placement in which server and network load are considered together in a video server cluster environment.

  • Background: Assessment of the radiation doses to which workers are exposed can differ depending on the placement of dosimeters on the body. In addition, it is affected by whether the placement is under or over a shielding apron. This study aimed to evaluate the actual positioning of personal dosimeters on the body, with or without shielding aprons, among radiation workers in Korea. Materials and Methods: We analyzed the survey data, which included demographic characteristics, such as sex, age, occupation, work history, and placement of the personal dosimeter being worn, from a cohort study of Korean radiation workers. We assessed the use of personal dosimeters among workers, stratified by sex, age, working period, starting year of work, and occupation. Results and Discussion: Overall, high compliance (89.1% to 99.0%) with the wearing of dosimeters on the chest was observed regardless of workers' characteristics, such as age, sex, occupation, and work history. However, the placement of dosimeters, either under or over the shielding aprons, was inconsistent. Overall, 40.1% of workers wore dosimeters under their aprons, while the others wore dosimeters over their aprons. This inconsistency indicates that radiation doses are possibly measured differently under the same exposure conditions solely owing to variations in the placement of worn dosimeters. Conclusion: Although a lack of uniformity in dosimeter placement when wearing a shielding apron may not cause serious harm in radiation dose management for workers, the development of detailed guidelines for dosimeter placement may improve the accuracy of dose assessment.

  • In high performance embedded systems, the use of multiple on-chip memories is an essential architectural feature for exploiting inherent parallelism in multimedia applications. This feature allows multiple data accesses to be executed in parallel. However, it remains difficult to effectively exploit of multiple on-chip memories. The successful use of this architecture strongly depends on how to efficiently detect and exploit memory parallelism in target applications. In this paper, we propose a technique based on a linear array access descriptor [1], which is generated from profiled data, to detect and exploit memory parallelism. The proposed technique tackles an array reorganization problem to maximize memory parallelism in multimedia applications. We present preliminary experiments applying the proposed technique onto a representative coarse grained reconfigurable array processor (CGRA) with multimedia kernel codes. Our experimental results demonstrate that our technique optimizes data placement by putting independent data on separate storage. The results exhibit 9.8% higher performance on average compared to the existing method.
