  • The purposes of this study were to define the current status of information infrastructures and electronic information retrieval systems in university libraries in Korea, to assess the impact of information technology on library collection development in Korea universities, and to determine the relationship between electronic information retrieval service and library collection development. Data was collected by a mail survey. Questionnaires were mail in December, 1997 to all 134 4-year university libraries. Approximately 78 percent of the questionnaires was returned. The data taken from the survey instruments were analyzed with the analysis of variance(ANOVA) test of SAS program.

  • The authorized form is called the heading must be unique and consistent. Without both uniqueness and cosistency, retrieval from the bibliographic database will not be optimal and in some cases may even be impossible. But the authority control is extremely expensive, because it is labour-intensive and dependent on professional investigation and judgement. In fact, it is by far the most expensive function in all of bibliographic control. The processes used to determine the form of access points. maintain. use. and evaluate very accurate authority records reduce the efficiency to generate or merge bibliographic items without modification from any national level bibliographic utilities as well as individual library. In this paper non-authority control system was suggested to solve the disadvantages of authority work. The apparent advantages of the non-authority control system are it is easy to determine the heading, input the bibliographic data. integrate the access points into an existing file, and generate and merge bibliographic data without modification. In addition, non-authority control system can be transmitted into online information retrieval system conducted with a mixture of controlled vocabularies and natural language.

  • Exploring research similarity of researchers offers insight on research communities and potential interactions among scholars. While co-authorship is a popular measure for studying research similarity of researchers, it cannot provide insight on authors who have not collaborated yet. In this work, we present novel approach to capture research similarity of authors using citation information. Extensive study is conducted on DATA & KNOWLEDGE ENGINEERING (DKE) publications to demonstrate and compare suggested approach with co-authorship based approach. Analysis result shows that proposed approach distinguishes author relationships that is not shown in co-authorship network.

  • This study analyzed the methods for representing and linking personal information in the linked data of National Library of Korea and provided suggestions for expanding the scope of identifying and linking of the personal information. As a result, the personal information as a subject has been dealt with a concept, where the personal information as a contributor has been linked with a vocabulary of personal name. In addition, there have not been assured of including additional information except existing authority data in the process of building the linked data. Therefore, this study suggested that linking personal information as a subject and personal information as a contributor was essential for the quality of linked data. In addition, we proposed to provide additional information related to the person in linked data for expanding the scope of access points in information discovery.

  • This study draws on the current momentum to diversify open government data research through multidimensional scaling and model development. It formulates a quality assessment model applicable to library open data, taking into consideration the paucity of such research in the field. The model was developed using the Delphi method and verified for validity and reliability on the basis of a survey administered to library open data users. The results of the fourth round exhibited an average of 4.00 for all measured elements and a minimum validity of .75, rendering the model appropriate for use in quality assessments of library open data. The convergence and stability results provided by the expert panel fell below .50, confirming that there was no need to conduct further surveys in order to establish the validity of the Delphi method. The model's reliability likewise garnered results of .60 and above in all three dimensions. This Model completed with the input of the Delphi panel was put through a verification process in which library open data users such as domestic and international librarians, developers, and open data activists reviewed the model for validity and reliability. The model scored low on validity on account of its failure to load all measure factors and elements pertaining to the three dimensions. Reliability results, on the other hand, were at 0.6 and above for all dimensions and measured elements.

  • The library tour program is a new type of cultural program that was first introduced and operated by J City, and library tourists travel to specialized libraries in the city according to a set course and experience various experiences. This study aims to build a customized course recommendation model that considers the characteristics of individual participants in addition to the existing fixed group travel format so that more users can enjoy the opportunity to participate in library tours. To this end, the characteristics of library travelers were categorized to establish traveler personas, and library evaluation items and evaluation criteria were established accordingly. We selected 22 libraries targeted by the library travel program and measured library data through actual visits. Based on the collected data, we derived the characteristics of suitable libraries and developed a persona-based library tour course recommendation model using a decision tree algorithm. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed recommendation model, we build a mobile application mockup, and conducted user evaluations with actual library users to identify satisfaction and improvements to the developed model.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explain the necessity of secure budget in public libraries with regard to promoting library usage. It is namely to attempt to find out if there really is a connection between library funding and library usage. For this purpose, the relevant data of all the 31 public libraries in Busan were collected from the 2013 National library Statistics of Korea. To determine the connection between library funding and usage, two variables were selected, 'TFI (Total Funding Indicator) = $\sqrt{personnelcosts{\times}materialcosts}$' for independent variable and 'LU (Library Usage) = (visits per year) + (loans per year)/number of inhabitants' for dependent variable. The results showed that there is a clear relationship between TFI and LU and If more cost is spent on personal resources and material resources, the total usage of the public library also increase. The findings are limited due to the fact that the observation was focusing on public libraries in one community and the period of observation was one year in 2013.

  • This study was carried out to examine the awareness and use of social media tools by library and information professionals (LIPs) in selected academic libraries in South-west, Nigeria and the challenges they face in the use of social media technologies. Descriptive survey was adopted for this study. The population of the study comprised 217 library and information professionals from 10 selected academic libraries in south-west, Nigeria. A total enumeration technique was used to cover all the library and information professionals, 136 respondents filled and returned the questionnaire, given a response rate of 62.7%. The questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data collected. The findings show that majority of LIPs possessed a high level of awareness in the use of social media tools. The study also revealed that social network tools were highly used by LIPs in the academic libraries studied and the types of social media used by LIPs was also revealed. The major challenges faced in the use of social media include inadequate power supply, lack of Internet access and time constraints. The paper recommended that to enhance the use of social media by LIPs, there is need for constant awareness of the importance of social media tools to LIPs and libraries in effective service delivery, LIPs should be ready to learn, unlearn and be learned in the use of social media and university libraries should provide enabling environment such as internet connectivity, power supply and policy to guide LIPs in social media usage.
