Research on the Characteristics of Research Data-related Service in North American University Libraries: Focusing on the Hierarchical Structure of Services, Job Titles, and Job Descriptions (북미 지역 대학도서관의 연구데이터 관련 서비스 특성 연구 - 서비스 간 계층 구조와 직책 및 직책별 직무내용을 중심으로 -)

  • This study investigated research data-related services offered by North American university libraries, focusing on service names, hierarchical relationships, job titles of service managers, and job descriptions. The study analyzed the homepages of 50 university libraries and found a clear hierarchical relationship between research data-related service names, indicating a clear structure for these services. The title of 'librarian' was most commonly used for the position in charge of research data-related services, and the job content of this position was found to be quite wide. Other job titles such as 'specialist' and 'analyst' were also used for experts in various research data-related fields. The existence of these job titles was seen as a way for university libraries to strengthen the expertise of their research data-related services. Based on the findings, the authors propose a service composition system for research data-related services in domestic university libraries. This system includes 'research data service' as the highest-level service name, with 'research data management service', 'GIS service', and 'data visualization service' as sub-service names. The authors also suggest that research data-related services should be provided through collaboration between existing university librarians in the early stages of service provision, and that new recruitment of research data-related professionals could be considered gradually.

A study on the professional perception of public library directors and its influential factors (한국 공공도서관장의 전문직의식과 그 영향요인)

  • The purpose of this study was attempted to investigate the professional perception of the public library directors in Korea, and to measure and to compare the perceptional difference between Directors that have or have not of Librarian's license. The authors obtained data through questionaires by mail to 188 directors of public Libraries. The number of respondents which become available for analysis was 188 and the response rate was 58.8%. The Major findings of this study are summarized as follows: 1. The professional perception of public Library Directors differs from the qualification for a librarian. 2. The Librarian's license made difference with regards to perceptional attitudes, consciousness of services, satisfying on job situation of Directors. 3. The professional perception of public Library Directors may have influence on each others of a school career, task work, colleague understandings on the gob situations. 4. but the difference have no significance statiscally. 5. Thus we need to study other types of organization and influencial variables for generalization of this study.

The Effect of a Librarian's Organizational Commitment and Organization Citizenship Behavior on Organizational Effectiveness (도서관사서의 조직헌신성과 조직시민행동이 조직효과에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aims to explore the effect of a librarian's organizational commitment and Organization Citizenship Behavior (OCB) on organizational effectiveness in libraries. The following conclusions were drawn from the research procedures and data analysis. First, the librarian's organizational commitment make no difference by age level. The librarian's organizational commitment makes no difference by career. The librarian's organizational commitment and organization citizenship behavior make no difference by employment status. Second, the highest correlation is maintain commitment factor and all of the commitment. The second high correlation is sportsmanship behavior factor and all of the organization citizenship behavior. The third high correlation is conscientiousness behavior factor and all of the organization citizenship behavior. Third, the organizational effectiveness is affected 13.4% by a librarian's organization citizenship behavior, 5.6% by librarian's organizational commitment.

An Examination of the Course Syllabi Related to Data Librarian in the ALA-accredited Library and Information Science Degree Programs (ALA인가 문헌정보학 학위 과정의 데이터 사서 양성과 관련된 교과목의 강의계획서 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the status of data librarian-related course syllabi in the 2023 American Library Association(ALA)-accredited degree programs in Library and Information Science (LIS). The present study examined LIS course syllabi related to data librarian including course titles, course objectives, course descriptions, weekly topics and assignments. ALA-accredited LIS programs offer various courses in data librarianship such as data management and curation, data analysis and visualization, metadata, information services, research methods, library management, academic libraries, computer programming and databases. This study collected 184 syllabi from the ALA-accredited LIS programs and selected and analyzed 127 syllabi that are related to data librarianship. The study examined 3,045 course titles, 2,559 course description from 61 LIS degree programs overseas, and 1,330 course titles from 37 LIS degree programs in Korea. This study found that LIS degree programs both in Korea and overseas offer various courses for data librarians. The researcher hopes the findings of this study will be used as a starting point to develop or redesign courses related to data librarianship in the information field.

Librarians' Experience of Occupational Socialization: A Phenomenological Study (사서의 직업사회화 경험 - 현상학적 연구 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify and understand the meaning and structure of librarians' experience of occupational socialization. Two in-depth interviews were conducted with each of the sixteen participants, practiced above 5 years in libraries and selected by theoretical sampling. Colaizzi's method of phenomenological interpretation was used to arrive at themes that represent what the experience of being a librarian meant to participants. Five thematic categories emerged from the data: 1) growing through deepening work and extending ability, 2) adapting the organization culture, 3) come to maturity along with users, 3) having double consciousness of the profession, 4) seeking self-realization as a librarian. Thus, librarians' experience means to orient toward the becoming a librarian with the professional situated the practice, and is the process librarian concretizes and realizes the ideal type of librarianship in the practice through adjustable interactive-process with environments.

A Phenomenological Study on the Their Tasks and Roles of Electronic Resource Acquisition Librarian (전자자원 수서 담당 사서가 경험하는 업무와 역할변화에 관한 현상학적 연구)

  • This study is a qualitative study on the workplace experience of electronic resource acquisition librarian in university libraries. The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of their task and roles, new change of their role. For this study, we conducted in-depth interviews with 9 electronic resource acquisition librarian in academic libraries and applied phenomenological research method. As result of analysis, 3 catagories were appeared from 11 themes as data analysis. These catagories were characterized as follows: 'coping with structural problems of the real obstacles', 'enduring of psychological pressure', and 'growing as professional with competency'. It is expected to further study on competency for electronic resource acquisition librarian.

A Study of the Librarian Personnel for Public Libraries on the Lump-sum Personnel Expenditure System (공무원 총액인건비제에서 공공도서관 사서직 인력에 대한 고찰)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the influence of the change on librarian number of local governments on the lump-sum personnel expenditure system. Data were collected and analyzed from the Enhanced local laws and regulations information system and local government home pages of 15 local governments where opened more than two public libraries from 2008 to 2010. Results show that the number of 15 government employees was increased but the number of librarian was slightly increased. Also, the number of administrative positions was increased using plural series position system. It shows that the number of librarian can be increased under the lump-sum personnel expenditure system.

  • The employment prospects of graduates in the Library and Information academic has largely concentrated in the field of librarianship as well as the curriculum of the academic itself. Since there are limitations in increasing the number of libraries and the available posts in the librarianship, the full-time jobs in the field are also limited. Even for the available posts in the field of librarianship, the majority is in contract based posts which does not guarantee a good working environment. The purpose of this research is to make policy implications to improve the employment rates of librarians. The main research methods include literature review of the previous studies and available statistical data, and a questionnaire targeting students and librarians. The targeting policy implications can be categorized into 4 factors, including, as supply side, improvements in the qualification of librarian certificate, in training for librarians, and as demand side, laws on library employment, and improvement of library services for co-operatives. There are 15 detailed strategies to support the 4 factors. For the improvement of strategies in library related laws, the following elements will be considered; supporting system for temporary jobs, the title of librarian post and the library itself, and librarian placement criteria in terms of its realization and mandatory, and obligations in library evaluation. The Council discussions propose the expansion of librarian award system, provision of information systems for librarian jobs, and developments in promotional materials and their deployment for librarians.

Progressive Librarian 'Zoia M. Horn' and Her Library Freedom Ideologies (진보사서 '조이아 혼'과 그녀의 도서관 자유 사상)

  • Uncovering ideological trends and varieties embedded in contemporary progressive librarianship, the depth and breath of the librarians' thoughts should be more expandable than before. That is the purpose of the study. To accomplish the purpose, this study analyzed key ideologies of American progressive librarian Zoia M. Horn(1918-2014) as reviewing carefully her biography with the inductive approach for qualitative data analysis. As a result, author suggests that the core values of Z.M. Horn's library freedom ideologies have identified as equality, intellectual freedom, and pacifism. In addition, the ingredients of these core ideologies also were identified.
