Congestion Control Mechanism for Efficient Network Environment in WMSN (무선 멀티미디어 센서 네트워크에서 효율적인 네트워크 환경을 위한 혼잡 제어 메커니즘)

  • Wireless multimedia sensor network senses and transfers mass multimedia data. Also, it is sensitive to latency. This thesis proposes a routing technique based on traffic priority in order to improve the network efficiency by minimizing latency. In addition, it proposes a congestion control mechanism that uses packet service time, packet inter-arrival time, buffer usage, etc. In this thesis, we verified the reduction of packet latency in accordance with the quality level of packet as a result of the performance analysis through the simulation method. Also, we verified that the proposed mechanism maintained a reliable network state by preventing packet loss due to network overload.

  • This paper focuses on congestion control for ATM network with uncertain time-variant delays. The time-variant delays can be distinguished into two distinct components. The first one that is represented by time-variant queueing delays in the intermediate switches is occurred in the return paths of RM cells. The next one is a forward path delay. It is solved by the VBR Model which quantifies the data propagation from the sources to the switch. Robust $H_{\infty}$ control is studied for solving congestion problem with norm-bounded time-varying uncertain parameters. The suitable robust $H_{\infty}$ controller is obtained from the solution of a convex optimization problem including terms of LMIs.

  • COSMOS system which was developed in Seoul for real-time signal control was designed to judge traffic condition for practicing signal operation. However, it occurs efficiency problem that stop line detection and queue length detection could not judge overflow saturation of street. For that reason, following research process GPS data of Seoul city's corporationowned taxi to calculate travel speed that excluded existing system of stop line detection and queue length detection. Also, "Research of calculating queue length by GPS data" which was progressed with following research expressed queue length. It is based on establishing algorithm of judging congestion situation. The algorithm was applied to a few areas where appeared congestion situation consistently to confirm real time traffic condition with established network.   • Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) area presents a complex traffic pattern due to ships entering or leaving the port to utilize port facilities, as well as ships passing through the coastal area. To ensure safe and efficient management of maritime traffic, VTS operators continuously monitor and control vessels in real time. However, during periods of high traffic congestion, the workload of VTS operators increases, which can result in delayed or inadequate VTS services. Therefore, it would be beneficial to predict traffic congestion and congested areas to enable more efficient traffic control. Currently, such prediction relies on the experience of VTS operators. In this paper, we defined vessel traffic congestion from the perspective of a VTS operator. We proposed a method to generate traffic networks using historical navigational data and predict traffic congestion and congested areas. Experiments were performed to compare prediction results with real maritime data (Daesan port VTS) and examine whether the proposed method could support VTS operators.

Cross-Layer Resource Allocation in Multi-interface Multi-channel Wireless Multi-hop Networks

  • In this paper, an analytical framework is proposed for the optimization of network performance through joint congestion control, channel allocation, rate allocation, power control, scheduling, and routing with the consideration of fairness in multi-channel wireless multihop networks. More specifically, the framework models the network by a generalized network utility maximization (NUM) problem under an elastic link data rate and power constraints. Using the dual decomposition technique, the NUM problem is decomposed into four subproblems - flow control; next-hop routing; rate allocation and scheduling; power control; and channel allocation - and finally solved by a low-complexity distributed method. Simulation results show that the proposed distributed algorithm significantly improves the network throughput and energy efficiency compared with previous algorithms.

Analysis of Lane-by-lane Traffic Flow Characteristics in Korea by Using Multilane Freeway Data (국내 다차로 고속도로 자료를 이용한 차로별 교통류 특성 분석)

  • PURPOSES : This study analyzed the lane-by-lane traffic flow characteristics in Korea by using real-world data, including congestion levels, for 2-, 3-, and 4-lane freeways. METHODS : On the basis of a literature review, lane flow and speed characteristics were analyzed using flow measurements and speed ratios. In addition, the effect of congestion levels on traffic flow were visualized using rescaled cumulative plots. RESULTS : Driver behavior varied depending on the congestion level. During free-flow conditions, the lane-use ratio of individual lanes varied largely, whereas during congestion, the ratio was nearly the same for all lanes (i.e., equilibrium). During maximum-flow and congestion conditions, the median lane was used more than the shoulder lane, whereas during all other conditions, the shoulder lane had a higher lane-use ratio. In 3- or 4-lane freeways, the lane-use ratio of the median lane always exceeded 1 and was the highest during free-flow conditions. CONCLUSIONS : The results of the present analysis can be used as an index to predict congestion before a lane is overcapacitated. Moreover, the results can be applied in variable lane guidance systems, such as car navigation systems and variable message displays, to control traffic flow.

  • Wireless networks composed of multimedia-enabled resource-constrained sensor nodes have enriched a large set of monitoring sensing applications. In such communication scenario, however, new challenges in data transmission and energy-efficiency have arisen due to the stringent requirements of those sensor networks. Generally, congested nodes may deplete the energy of the active congested paths toward the sink and incur in undesired communication delay and packet dropping, while bit errors during transmission may negatively impact the end-to-end quality of the received data. Many approaches have been proposed to face congestion and provide reliable communications in wireless sensor networks, usually employing some transport protocol that address one or both of these issues. Nevertheless, due to the unique characteristics of multimedia-based wireless sensor networks, notably minimum bandwidth demand, bounded delay and reduced energy consumption requirement, communication protocols from traditional scalar wireless sensor networks are not suitable for multimedia sensor networks. In the last decade, such requirements have fostered research in adapting existing protocols or proposing new protocols from scratch. We survey the state of the art of transport protocols for wireless multimedia sensor networks, addressing the recent developments and proposed strategies for congestion control and loss recovery. Future research directions are also discussed, outlining the remaining challenges and promising investigation areas.

  • One of the most important matters in designing network and realizing service, is to grip on the traffic characteristics. Conventional traffic prediction and analysis used the models which based on the Poisson or Markovian. Recently, experimental research on the LAN, WAN and VBR traffic properties have been pointed rut that they weren't able to display actual real traffic specificities because the models based on the Poisson assumption had been underestimated the long range dependency of network traffic and self-similar peculiarities, it has been lately presented that the new approach method using self-similarity characteristics as similar as the real traffic models. Therefore, in this paper, we generated self-similar data traffic like real traffic as background load. On the existing ABR congestion control algorithm, we analyzed by classify into ACR, buffer utilization. cell drop rate, transmission throughput with the representative EFCI, ERICA, EPRCA and NIST twitch algorithm to show the efficient reaction about the burst traffic.

  • We analyzed that the loss of data in TCP protocol based wireless networks caused by overlapped responses in bi-directional nodes that were resulted in out of the data sequence. This loss can be prevented by using revised TCP rate control algorithm and the performance of throughput can also be improved. The rate control algorithm is applied when the congestion happens between nodes while traffic packets are retransmitting in TCP bandwidth. In addition to applying the rate control algorithm, we determine the number of system clients in bandwidth and the average of pausing time between transmitting serial files to produce a competitive level so that an efficient performance of rapid retransmitting for the loss of multi-packets. This paper discusses the improvement of congestion control in that the decrease of the loss, firstly, as ensuring an efficient connection rate and, secondly, as using sliding window flow control.

Efficient Video Streaming Based on the TCP-Friendly Rate Control Scheme (TCP 친화적인 전송률 제어기법 기반의 효율적인 비디오 스트리밍)

  • The multimedia traffic of continuous video and audio data via streaming service accounts for a significant and expanding portion of the Internet traffic. This streaming data delivery is mostly based on RTP with UDP. However, UDP does not support congestion control. For this reason, UDP causes the starvation of congestion controlled TCP traffic which reduces its bandwidth share during overload situation. In this paper, we propose a new TCP-friendly rate control scheme called 'TF-RTP(TCP-Friendly RTP)'. In the congested network state, the TF-RTP exactly estimates the competing TCP's throughput by using the modified parameters. Then, it controls the sending rate of the video streams. Therefore, the TF-RTP adjusts its sending rate to TCP-friendly and fair share with competing TCP traffics. Through the simulation, we prove that the TF-RTP correctly estimates the TCP's throughput and improves the TCP-friendliness and fairness.
