This paper describes the area of intelligent systems research as funded by the Civil and Mechanical Systems (CMS) Division of the National Science Foundation (NSF). With developments in computer science, information technology, sensing and control the design of typical machines and structures by civil and mechanical engineers is evolving toward intelligent systems that can sense, decide and act. This trend toward electro-mechanical design is well-established in modern machines (e.g. vehicles, robots, disk drives) and often referred to as mechatronics. More recently intelligent systems design is becoming an important aspect of structures, such as buildings and bridges. We briefly review recent developments in structural control, including the role that NSF has played in their development, and discuss on-going CMS activities in this area. In particular, we highlight the interdisciplinary initiative on Sensors and Sensor Networks and the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES). NEES is a distributed cyberinfrastructure to support earthquake engineering research, and provides the pioneering NEES grid computing environment for simulation, teleoperation, data collection and archiving, etc.

The purpose of this study is to improve the academic information flow systems in university environment. The study explored various aspects of academic research flow systems, such as national standards and rules for digital library of electronic theses and dissertations, and national information infrastructure for digital data collection, management flow system through networks. Based on the analysis of current situations, the study developed the procedures and systems for digitalizing, collecting, processing, archiving, and providing of graduate research works.

One of current trends of medical technology is analog to digital. Moreover, The Government put a premium on PACS(Picture Archiving and Communication System) for Medical Insurance in November, 1999. Therefore many hospitals are installing(or planning to install) PACS facilities on their buildings. However most of hospitals didn't consider PACS facilities in the beginning of construction. In particular, the Networking is one of the most difficult things for PACS installation. There is no space for network equipments, and no path for network lines, etc. To solve these problems, wireless network is proposed. The wireless network is divided to three parts mainly. One is the wireless communication for Local Area Network, another is the data transmission through a satellite for Tele-Radiology, and the last one is the technology using Bluetooth for each sub-system of PACS. But there are other problems in wireless systems, i.e., network bandwidth, system stability, interference with other devices. The purpose of this paper is to suggest the future and new trend of PACS including all the problems.

The present study aims to develop an agenda consisted of strategies for long-term preservation of electronic records with enduring values. To do this, it has collected 19 cases of agenda reports generated from the digital preservation community at large, including those working on electronic publications and research data as well as electronic records. The study draws its conclusion by proposing an agenda encompassing 4 areas: laws and policies; research; technologies; and partnership.

국제 수로 기구(IHO, International Hydrographic Organization)에서는 해도제작을 위한 해양조사의 기준을 마련하고, 전세계적으로 사용되는 해도의 정확도를 표준화하고 있다. IHO에서는 탐사 기술의 발달을 반영하여, 기존의 단 빔 음향 측심기 이외에도 멀티 빔 음향 측심기(Multibeam Echo Sounder)와 사이드 스캔 소나(Side Scan Sonar)를 이용한 해양 탐사 시에 요구되는 정확도와 탐사 자료에 대한 메타 데이터(Metadata)의 작성을 요구하고 있다. 본 논문은 수로 측량에서 얻어진 측량 자료들의 처리절차와 자료관리 기법에 대한 연구이다. IHO 해양탐사 기준에 맞는 탐사 자료 처리와, 메타 데이터를 자동으로 생성하여 측량자료관리 DB구축 및 관리를 주 기능으로 하는 시스템을 설계하고 구현한다. 특히, 본 논문은 해양 탐사 자료 처리 시스템을 개발하기 위하여, 해양 자료 처리 과정을 표준화하고, 국제적 해양 자료의 교환 표준인 MGD77과 호환 가능한 메타 데이터를 자동 생성하며, 1Hz로 수집되는 GPS 측위자료로부터 특징점(Waypoint)을 정의하고, 이를 추출하여 측심선을 벡터화 (Trackline Vectorizing) 하는 알고리즘을 구현한다. 개발된 시스템은 현재 국립 해양조사원의 해양2000호에서 획득된 탐사자료에 적용, 운영되고 있다.

Currently many researches are going on a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) which can handle a large number of image data very efficiently. However, the price of those systems are very expensive to a small and medium hospital. In this paper, we developed a PC based Mini-PACS at a low price with a high performance. The main components of the designed system are: Image processing and display for a diagnosis, Client/Server database management system, Multi-monitor display system, Connection through the World Wide Web with Common Gateway Interface.

The Landsat Program is the longest running enterprise for acquisition of imagery of the Earth from space. The first Landsat satellite was launched in 1972 and the most recent, Landsat 7, was launched on April 15, 1999. The Landsat satellites have acquired millions of images. The Landsat 7 receiving station is installed at more than 25 sites and will be installed in Korea. This paper will address the work being carried out for the development of image receiving and processing system for the Landsat 7 image data, which will be used at ground station of Landsat 7 in Korea.

Scattered satellite images were collected and converted from TDF to HDF as a standard format. We reviewed all the metadata on the images domestic and abroad and set up the metadata for the meteorological satellite images and naming rules in KMA. The satellite information search system that meteorological satellite images were in service with metadata for public and academic fields was implemented for quick search and download. This system will facilitate satellite images for various academic purposes beyond KMA and management functions of the system make routine workflow to manage satellite images in an ease and standardized way.

최근 취향 관심사를 기반으로 한 소모임 플랫폼 수요가 높아지듯, 대학 내외의 사회 전반에서 수준 높은 네트워킹에 대한 욕구가 강한 상황이다. 나아가, 교육 환경, 거주 지역, 개인의 성향 등의 변인들이 성장의 주요 발판이 될 인적 자원을 만드는 데에 지대한 영향을 끼친다는 점에서, 진입 장벽을 낮출 서비스에 대한 니즈가 존재한다. 한편, 기존의 플랫폼은 대학 동아리 및 소모임 활동을 분산적으로 취급하며 총괄하지 못한다. 따라서, 본 논문은 기존 플랫폼의 문제점을 개선한 메타버스 웹 플랫폼인 클러버스(Clubverse)를 소개한다. 이는 대학 내 동아리 간의 소통 및 외부 업체와의 연계를 제고하고 성장기회를 공평하게 분배해 변화에 대비할 수 있는 가능성을 지닌다.

There were not many ways to share research data in the past, but modern information technology has allowed us to share these data. As data sharing has its side effects, researchers' attitude and practice to sharing data vary by individual discipline. This study found that foreign learned societies, NGOs, universities and research funders support data sharing in a utilitarian perspective, while major publishers demand it so that other researchers can verify the data in peer review. It is important that open data policy should be settled down in near future for evoking further studies and encouraging progress in science. In order to establish data sharing successfully in Korea, efforts could be made by researchers, universities, academic libraries, and governments as well as the stakeholder. This study also proposed specific ways to perform it.
