  • In an early paper Skumanich suggested the existence of a scaling law relating the mean sunspot magnetic field with the square-root of the photospheric pressure. This was derived from an analysis of a variety of theoretical spot models including those by Yun (1968). These were based on the Schliiter-Temesvary (S- T) similarity assumption. To answer criticisms that such modeling may have unphysical (non-axial maxima) solutions, the S-T model was revisited, Moon et al. (1998), with an improved vector potential function. We consider here the consequences of this work for the scaling relation. We show that by dimensionalizing the lateral force balance equation for the S- T model one finds that a single parameter enters as a characteristic value of the solution. This parameter yields Skumanich's scaling directly. Using an observed universal flux-radius relation for dark solar magnetic features (spots and pores) for comparison, we find good to fair agreement with Yun's characteristic value, however the Moon et al. values deviate significantly.

  • In this paper, the emission and aging properties of ZnS:Cu electroluminescent device were experiment respectively at room temperature and 7$0^{\circ}C$ relative humidity 100%. ZnS:Cu and BaTiO$_3$were respectively used for phosphor and dielectric. While AC 100V on 400Hz frequency were applied to the devices at room temperature and 70$_3$relative humidity 100%, the change of brightness were measured and compared. The surface of aged devices were investigated by scanning electron microscope. With the continuously operated environment of room temperature and 7$0^{\circ}C$ relative humidity 100%, the decay time were measured and the dark spot and aging status on the surface of the device were investigated. ZnS:Cu electroluminescent properties were deteriorated by the Increased temperature and humidity. Also the deteriorated properties were confirmed by the brightness and surface chanties of device, and the aging mechanism from the simulation on sulfur vacancy and deep tracts density.

  • For application of a yellow pigment as food additives, stability of a water-soluble yellow pigment from Bacillus sp. PY123 was investigated. The yellow pigment from Bacillus sp. PY123 was purified with pH treatment, activated carbon and silica gel column chromatography. The partial purified yellow pigment appeared only one spot on silica gel TLC after 12 evaporation and under irradiation of UV 253nm at dark room. Rf value of the pigment was measured at 0.04 and 0.12 with development of a solvent mixture (Butanol : Acetic acid : water = 4 :1:5) and a solvent mixture (Isopropanol : Ammonia : Water = 9 :1: 2), respectively, The partial purified pigment appeared a white fluorescence under UV365nm irradiation. The partial purified yellow pigment had a main peak and a minor peak on HPLC using 20mM phosphate buffer(pH 7.0) at 1ml/min flow rate. The partial purified pigment was stable at heat treatment, acidic pH, oxide-reductants and surfactants.

  • Leaf spot and blight disease was observed on two-year-old seedlings of Dendropanax morbifera (Korean name: Hwangchil tree) during July of 2008 in Jindo Island, Korea. Symptoms included yellow-brown to dark brown irregularly enlarged spots frequently located along the veins of leaves. The lesions were often surrounded by chlorotic haloes. Severe leaf blight and subsequent defoliation occurred when conditions favored disease outbreak. The causal organism of the disease was identified as Alternaria panax based on morphological characteristics and sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region of rDNA. A. panax isolates induced leaf spots and blight symptoms not only on D. morbifera but also on the other members of Araliaceae tested. This is the first report of foliar blight caused by A. panax on D. morbifera.

  • Based on six specimens collected from eastern coast of Jeju Island, Korea, Istiblennius dussumieri is described as a new Korean record representing the northernmost occurrence of the species in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. The species is characterized by having a dark spot between first and third dorsal spines, branched orbital cirrus, and lacking nape cirri. A new Korean name, "Geom-eun-jeom-be-do-ra-chi" is proposed for the species.

  • This work aimed to develop ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) thin films ablation with a KrF Eximer laser required for the application in flat panel display, especially patterning into small geometry on a large substrate area. The threshold fluence for ablating ITO on glass substrate is about 0.1 J/cm$^2$. And its value is much smaller than using third harmonic Nd:YAG laser. Through the optical microscope measurement the surface color of the damaged ITO is changed into dark brown and irradiated spot is completely isolated form the undamaged surroundings by laser light. The XPS analysis showed that the relative surface concentration of Sn and In were essentially unchanged (In :Sn=5:1) after irradiating Eximer laser. Using aluminium mask made by second harmonic Nd:YAG laser the ITO patterning is carried out.

  • Cornus officinalis plants that grow in several locations in Korea have been found to be infected with leaf spot disease. Symptoms include necrotic lesions, which are angular, irregularly shaped, vein-limited, and dark brown, on both sides of the leaves. The causal agent of the disease was identified to be Pseudocercospora cornicola based on the morphological characteristics of the fungus and molecular phylogenetic analysis of the obtained multi-locus DNA sequence data. This is the first report investigating P. cornicola found on C. officinalis in Korea.

  • Red spot disease was found on broad bean (Vicia faba) in several farmer's field located in Changseon-myon, Namhae-gun, Gyeongnam provice in Korea. The typical symptoms of the disease were appeared on leaves and stems. The infection rates of the disease in the surveyed area were ranged from 16.4 to 84.6%. Lesions on the leaves were round with 1~4.2 mm in size and on the stem were narrow long fusiform with 1~15 mm in size. Conidia and conidiaphores were not readily farmed on PDA, however, a few conidia were formed on PDA added in extracts of 10 g of broad bean leaves. Conidia were light yellow green in color, globose or obovoid in shape, and 10~24$\times$8~22 $\mu$m in size. Conidiophores were cylindrical in shape, light brown in color and 3.6~12.8 $\mu$m in wide. Sclerotia of the fungus were readily formed in artificial media such as PDA. They were ellipsoid to irregular in shape, 1.2~11.8 mm in size and dark in color, The optimum temperature far growth of the fungus was about 2$0^{\circ}C$. On the basis of mycological characteristics, the fungus was identified as Botrytis fabae. This is the first report on the red spot of broad bean caused by Botrytis fabae in Korea.

  • In August 2015, leaf spot symptoms were observed on Korean gondre thistle (Cirsium setidens) in Youngwol, Korea. During the early stage, the symptoms appeared as one or more small gray-brown to brown spots on plant leaves. The spots showed extensive enlargement over time and eventually became large dark brown to black lesions on the whole leaf. Stemphylium species were consistently isolated from affected leaves. All isolates were identified as S. lycopersici, S. solani, or S. xanthosomatis based on morphological and cultural characteristics. The isolates were confirmed as S. lycopersici based on a multilocus sequence analysis using the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, elongation factor 1, GAPDH (glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase), and the noncoding region between the vacuolar membrane ATPase catalytic subunit A gene and a gene involved in vacuolar biogenesis. Pathogenicity was tested by spore suspension inoculation on wounded or unwounded gondre leaves. The lesions were observed on inoculated leaves within 3 days after inoculation, regardless of wound. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the leaf spot on gondre thistle caused by S. lycopersici in Korea or elsewhere.

  • Calli were induced from leaf base region of germinated rice(Oryza sativa L. cv. Nakdong) with high frequency of up to 65% on LS medium supplemented with $2.5mg/{\ell}2$, 4-D in the dark at $27^{\circ}C$. Embryogenic calli of pale yellow, globular type were selected and used for the initiation of cell suspension cultures in AA2 liquid medium with $2mg/\ell$ 2,4-D, 0.2mg/$\ell$ kinetin arid $0.1mg/\ell$ GA3. Protoplasts were isolated from the embryogenic cell suspensions after 4 months of culture and then were electroporated with 400V/cm for 1 msec. Electroporated protoplasts divided with plating efficiency of 1.1% on PCM liquid medium supplemented with $2.5mg/\ell$ 2, 4-D, $0.1mg/\ell$ kinetin and 10mM proline. The protoplasts-derived microcalli were cultured on $0.2{\mu}m$ membrane fitter placed onto LS2.5 solid medium containing fine suspension cells as a feeder cells, for 2 weeks in the dark at $27^{\circ}C$. After an additional 2 weeks of culture under fluorescent light of $30{\pm}/3{\mu}E$.m^{-2}S^{-1}, yellow calli of 2mm diameter were transferred to regeneration medium. Shoots were produced from the green spot of protoplasts-derived calli and plants were regenerated form protoplast-derived green calli with frequencies of 11∼33%.
