Clinical Study on the Correlation between Retention of Fluid, namely Damum(痰飮) and Dark Circles under Eyes (다크 서클(Dark Circles under Eyes)과 담음(痰飮)의 연관성에 관한 연구)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate correlation of the phlegm-retained fluid, namely Damum(痰飮) and dark circles under eyes. Methods: 2 males and 11 females aged 26-60 years were participated in this study. They were asked the intensity of 29 symptoms related with Damum(痰飮) including dark circle with the questionnaire published by the Journal of the Korea Institute of Oriental Medical Diagnostics. Three skin researchers including OMD graded the dark circles by inspection. We took the pictures around eyes by Facial Stage (Moritex, Japan) and analyzed the skin color by Image-Pro Plus (Media Cybernetics, USA). Results: There was statistically significant correlation between Damum(痰飮) and dark circles measured by self, inspectors and image analysis. Conclusions: In the Oriental Medicine, It is reported that the shadows under eyes are the sign of the retention of fluid, Damum(痰飮). In our study, that shadows, namely dark circles, has correlation with the symptoms of Damum(痰飮). Especially, the correlation between inspected grade and image analysis was very high. According to the above results, it is proved that dark circles under eyes are important diagnostic sign of Damum(痰飮).

  • Damum(痰飮) is a kind of pathologic secretion products that excessive water is accumulated in a part of body. Damhun(痰暈) is the vertigo induved by Damum(痰飮). We experienced two clinical cases treated vertigo by orietal medicine(herbal medication, acupuncture). 33-years old male and 63-years old female patients had Damhun(痰暈), vertigo by Damum(痰飮). We administered Banhabaechulcheoma-tang(Pansiabaichutienma-tang) and Yeonggyechulgam-tang(Lingguishugna-tang) to each Patient, and two Patients improved vertigo and referred symptoms. In other words, this study is that We did not limited peripheral vertigo to vestibular system, made a diagnosis of Damum(痰飮) and treated vertigo by orietal medicine(herbal medication, acupuncture) referred to many medical practitioner of many generations. We suggest that digestive sypmtom(related to Damum(痰飮), abdominal examination and stool frequency are closely associated with vertigo and could be estimated prognosis of vertigo.

Preliminary Study on Pattern Questionnaire for Damum Patterns (담음변증(痰飮辨證) 설간(設間) 개발(開發)을 위한 문헌연구(文獻硏究))

  • Objectives: In this study a pattern questionnaire for damum patterns was developed by means of literature review and statistical analysis. The individual approach of korean medicine is based on the concept of pattern identification, the objectivity and validity issues of which hold important meaning in the pratice and research. Methods: Review of literatures led to the selection of 22 items describing Dam or Um pattern. A preliminary questinnaire consisted of these items that may be scored with positive score at zero to seven. Results: Damum is all over the body syndromes. That is abnormal body conditions. Damun arouse body pain, breath disorder, digestion disorder, nerves disorder, excretion disorder. Conclusions: Review of literatures led to selection of 29 items describing Damun. A questionnaire is in preparation.

  • Objectives Damum is a general and fundamental concept in Oriental me야cine that deals with symptoms of diseases. but as far as Damum is concerned there has not been significant researches in terms of clinical medicine but only researches in the field of medical story. Therefore hopefully this study could contributes to the development of Damum which is very essential concept in Oriental medicine. Methods First of all we have made basic twenty-three items list through conducting researches on documents in regards to Damum, and finally designed twenty-nine survey inquiry by so called Delphi study-method that is based on opinions of professional groups. we have conducted a survey of twenty-nine inquirys on sixty-one cases and asked three Oriental medical doctors who are Damum specialists to diagnose and measure clinical values regarding Damum, followed by studying interrelationship between survey results and clinical values. conclusively we have made out a final Damum questionnaire form by selecting significant question items based on the results of the study. Results According to the analysis of the studies, fourteen question items were selected. Conclusions As far as Damum discriminant is concerned, additional verifing processes are needed to be carried out through more clinical cases. And it is through that more clinical studies are needed to be done in regards to Damum.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the effectiveness of korean medical treatments on recurrent aphthous stomatitis(RAS) diagnosed as excess pattern(實證) based on symptoms of damum(痰飮), blood stasis(瘀血) and fire-heat(火熱). Methods : We treated a 61-year-old male patient who has RAS by korean medicine, pharmacopuncture and acupuncture treatment. These treatments were performed from 2020.01.22. to 2020.02.29. We have confirmed the improvement of ulcer lesions and pain. We recorded images that include change of symptoms. Results : After the treatments were done, the scores of numeric rating scale(NRS), oral health impact profile-14 (OHIP-14), oral assessment guide (OAG) and world health organization oral toxicity scale (WHO OTS) were decreased. The NRS score was decreased from 7 to 1. The OHIP-14 score was decreased from 30 to 14. The OAG score was decreased from 17 to 9. The WHO OTS score was decreased from 2 to 1. And ulcer lesions were clearly decreased. Conclusions : According to the result, korean medical treatments such as korean medicine, pharmacopuncture and acupuncture treatment, that are targeted at excess pattern(實證) caused by damum(痰飮), blood stasis(瘀血) and fire-heat(火熱) can be effective for the treatment of RAS.
