An efficient three-dimensional fluid hyper-element for dynamic analysis of concrete arch dams

  • The accurate dynamic analysis of concrete arch dams relies heavily on employing a three-dimensional semi-infinite fluid element. The usual method for calculating the impedance matrix of this fluid hyper-element is dependent on the solution of a complex eigen-value problem for each frequency. In the present study, an efficient procedure is proposed which simplifies this procedure amazingly, and results in great computational time saving. Moreover, the accuracy of this technique is examined thoroughly and it is concluded that efficient procedure is incredibly accurate under all practical conditions.

  • When we design the large rockfill dams the safety of dams against the quake must be considered. Generally pseudostatic analysis method has been used for slope stability and evaluation of safety but the case of dynamic response analysis of earthquake was not in general in Korea. Therefore we need to perform the dynamic response analysis of rockfill dams from these results we analyze the dynamic behavior of dam body such as response displacement and response acceleration. consequently we analyse the selected model of rockfill dam using the FLAC-2D (FDM) program.

  • With increasing recognition on conservation of endangered species in Taiwan, one of the major conservation projects is the habitat restoration of Formosan Landlocked Salmon which is major threatened by check dams in the channel for their blockading pathway to upstream and causing the problems of population isolation and close-blood mating. By creating an opening in the central dam body appropriately, partial removal dams can provide pathway for the fish for the better upstream channel habitat. Four check dams at Gau-Shan Creek were remodeled between April of 1999 and September of 2002 with information supported from model experiments under certain hydraulic condition of field environment. Based on the follow-up investigation, the channel morphology of observation sections is in stable condition and the total number of Formosan Landlocked Salmon in this creek increased promptly at the reach containing partial-removed dams.

A Forecasting Model for the Flood Peak Stage and Flood Travel Time by Hydraulic Flood Routing

  • The peak flood discharge at a downstream station and the flood travel time between a pair of dams due to a specific flood release from the upper reservoir are computed using a hydraulic river channel routing method. The study covered the whole large reservoir system in the Han River, Korea. The computed flood discharges and the travel times between dams were correlated with the duration and the magnitude of flood release rate at the upstream reservoir, and hence a multiple regression model is proposed for each river reach between a pair of dams. The peak flood discharge at a downstream location can be converted to the peak flood stage by a rating curve. Hence, the proposed regression model could be used to forecast the peak flood stage at a downstream location and the flood travel time between dams using the information on the flood travel time, release rate and duration from the upper dam.

  • Depending on the increased energy needs, a large number of dams have been built around the world. These dams have significant impacts on river ecology and climate change. When the climate change scenarios are examined, it is stated that the annual average temperature in Turkey will increase by 2.5-4 degrees in the future years, the south of the country will be opposed to the severe drought threat, and the northern regions will have a flood risk. In particular, it can be predicted that many dams and dam lakes built in the North of Turkey may increase the impact of climate change. In this study, the effects of the dams constructed in Çoruh basin on climate change are examined. Environmental and ecological problems of dam reservoirs have been examined. As a result of the data received from meteorological stations, it was determined that temperature and rainfall changes in the region. In this direction, solution proposal is presented.

  • For various historical and technical reasons, the safety of dams has been controlled by an engineering standards-based approach, which has been developed over many years, initially for the design of new dams, but increasingly applied over the past few decades to assess the safety of existing dams. And some countries were asked for risk assessment on existing dam, which included structural, hydraulic safety of dam and social risk. Whereas other countries have developed and adapted as an additional tool to assist in decision-making for dam safety management. Dam risk analysis should need the reliability data of dam failures, the past constructed history and management records of existing dam. It is thought with risk analysis method of dams for structural safety management in domestic that suitable to use consider an event tree, fault tree and conditioning indexes method.

  • Korea has 17,500 irrigation dams and facing variety of causes that jeopardize dam safety. With limited resources available to manage large inventory, a portfolio risk analysis application method for numerous irrigation dam safety is essential. The purpose of this study is to find an optimum way to adopt the risk analysis to the large number of irrigation dams in Korea and to propose the portfolio risk analysis process for irrigation dams. In this study, the necessity of the risk analysis for reservoirs safety has been suggested and a phased process using pre-screening and screening methodology has been proposed. This proposed procedure will help to effectively introduce the risk analysis for reservoirs safety in Korea.

Geotechnical Characteristics of Major Earth and Rockfill Dams in Korea (우리나라 주요 록휠 댐의 지반공학적 특성)

  • This paper presents the status of dam construction in Korea, along with a brief assessment of the dam design and construction practice. The assessment is based on publically available design and construction records of the major existing rockfill dams which have been constructed since early 1970's, and focussed in identifying geotechnical characteristics of design and construction parameters of the dams. Though the assessment, two representative dams, having unique geotechnical characteristics, are selected for comprehensive comparison of their geotechnical engineering behavior during construction and operation. The comparison yields very interesting findings on the effects of various design and construction parameters on dam behavior.

  • In the safety check of gravity dams at earthquake, there have been two types of analysis conducted simultaneously; one is stability analysis and the other stress analysis. But those are essentially the same calculation other than the former considers the dams rigid, while the latter considers the dams' dynamic characteristics which results in the amplification of response acceleration on the upper part of dam body. In this paper, the identity of those two methods is verified by example calculation in terms of stability check of gravity dam. It can be concluded that if stress analysis were performed, stability check of gravity dam could be accomplished with the results from stress analysis, removing unnecessary present dual calculation practice.

  • LBD-007, a newly developed recombinant human interferon alpha A, was at dose levels of 0, 3 $\times$ $10^6$, 6 $\times$ $10^6$ and 12 $\times$ $10^6$ IU/kg/day administered subctaneously to pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats during the organogenetic period. Ethylenethiourea was used as a positive control. 2/3 of dams per group were subjected to caesarean section on day 20 of pregnancy and the remaining 10 dams per group were allowed to deliver. Effects of test substance on dams, embryonal development development of F1 fetuses, as well as growth, behaviour and mating performance of F1 offspring were examined. 1. No treatment-related changes in clinical signs, food consumption, body weight and necropsy findings of dams were observed.
