Streptomyces sp. A75 and A501 inhibited the mycelial growth of pathogenic Rhizoctonia solani and Pythium sp., which cause the ginseng disease known as damping-off. Three methods were evaluated for the control of these pathogens, using a mixture of the culture broths from Streptomyces sp. A75 and A501. The methods tested were seed dipping with 50-fold diluted broth, drenching of soil with 100-fold diluted broth after sowing, and combined seed dipping and drenching. These methods reduced the incidence of ginseng damping-off caused by R. solani by 81.3%, 84.8%, and 32.2% and that caused by Pythium sp. by 51.0%, 52.1%, and 75.3%, respectively. Based on these results, the combination of seed dipping and soil drenching after sowing using a mixture of the culture broths from Streptomyces sp. A75 and A501 effectively reduced the incidence of damping-off in ginseng.
Several microbial biocontrol products (Greenbiotech Co., Paju, Korea), Green-all T (Trichoderma harzianum), Green-all S(Bacillus sp.) and Green-all G (Streptomyces sp.) were supplemented with organic amendments such as sawdusts and rice hulls to study on efficacy of biological control of seeding damping-off of cucumber caused by Pythium ultimum. Sawdusts amended into potato dextrose agar alone could inhibit in vitro mycelial growth of P. ultimum. All there microbial products of Green-all T, Green-all G and Green-all S significantly reduced seeding damping-off (LSD, P=0.05). However, several amendments such as sawdusts and rice hulls into Green-all T and Green-all S products did not increase efficacy of biological control compared to non-amended treatment. In contrast, supplements of aminodoctor containing several amino acids (Greenbiotech Co., Korea) into Green-all G product significantly increased efficacy of biological control of seeding damping-off, resulting in from 42% to 2% disease incidence in relation to seedling emergence (LSD, P=0.05). Also, amendment of sawdusts into Tricoderma product significantly increased efficacy of biological control as disease index of 5.0 compared to non-amended control of 56.0 in Green-all T product alone. This indicates that organic amendments could increase efficacy of biological control of cucumber seedling damping-off.

Semi-active suspension systems are greatly expected to be in the mainstream of future controlled suspensions for passenger cars. In this study, a continuous variable damper for a passenger car suspension is developed, which is controlled actively and exhibits high performance with light weight, low cost, and low energy consumption. To get fast response of the damper, reverse damping mechanism is adapted, and to get small pressure change rate after blow-off, a pilot controlled proportional valve is designed and analyzed. The reverse continuous variable damper is designed as a HS-SH damper that offers good body control with reduced transferred input force from tire, compared with any other type of suspension system. The damper structure is designed, so that rebound and compression damping force can be tuned independently, of which variable valve is placed externally. The rate of pressure change with respect to the flow rate after blow-off becomes smooth when the fixed orifice size increases, which means that the blow-off slope is controllable using the fixed orifice size. The damping force variance is wide and continuous, and is controlled by the spool opening, of which scheme is usually adapted in proportional valves. The reverse continuous variable damper developed in this study is expected to be utilized in the semi-active suspension systems in passenger cars after its performance and simplicity of the design is confirmed through real car test.

Semi-active vibration control is one of the attractive control methods for space application due to its robustness as passive damping system and much higher damping performance than passive system. However, a chattering induced by the sudden variation of damping force at the time of On-Off switching of semi-active control device degrades pointing performance of the on-board payload. In this paper, to enhance the pointing performance of the on-board payload, we proposed a semi-active vibration isolation with a strategy for attenuating chattering effect. Numerical simulation results using simplified analysis model indicated that the proposed semi-active control strategy produced much better isolation performance than the conventional Bang-Bang control semi-active control laws derived from skyhook and LQ theories.

This paper presents a new approach to HVDC system control for damping subsynchronous oscillation (SSO) involving HVDC converters and turbine generator shaft systems. This requires a novel eigenvalue analysis (NEA) program, derivation of HVDC system modeling considering steady-state conditions and dynamic conditions in the combined AC/DC system, and an appropriate control scheme. The method suggested makes possible the design of a subsynchronous oscillation damping controller (SODC) to provide positive damping torque for the range of torsional modes in combined AC/DC systems. There are three steps involved in the design of a SODC; first the worst torsional mode is determined using the NEA program, next the SODC parameters are designed for the range of that torsional mode, and then finally an off-line simultaneous time domain program such as PSCAD/EMTDC is used to verify the parameters of the SODC. The suggested SODC design method is applied to two AC/DC systems, and its practicality is verified using the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation program.

In 2023, symptoms like damping-off disease were observed in 74 paprika growing in greenhouses in Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do, Korea. In this study, we tried to find the cause of the damping-off disease outbreak. We collected symptomatic seedlings and observed the typical crescent-shaped conidia of Fusarium oxysporum by microscope. To confirm the presence of F. oxysporum in the samples, polymerase chain reaction was performed using primers specific for F. oxysporum; the resulting sequence showed 99.11% identity with F. oxysporum. To confirm the pathogenicity of the F. oxysporum (CW) isolated from the samples, healthy paprika plants were inoculated with F. oxysporum CW and damping-off symptoms were observed 2 weeks later. To investigate whether the damping-off disease outbreak in Cheorwon-gun was caused by F. oxysporum-contaminated seeds, 100 paprika seeds were disinfected and placed in Murashige and Skoog medium. Typical pink F. oxysporum hyphae were found only in control non-disinfected seeds. An 18S rRNA-based and a TEF genebased phylogenetic analysis showed that the F. oxysporum CW isolate was not grouped with a F. oxysporum isolate reported from Cheorwon-gun in 2019. This study is the first report that an outbreak of damping-off disease in paprika in Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do, Korea, was caused by contamination of F. oxysporum seeds.
In this paper, the electromagnetic damper (EMD), which is composed of a permanent-magnet rotary DC motor, a ball screw and a nut, is considered to be analyzed as a semi-active damper. The main objective pursued in the paper is to study the two degrees of freedom (DOF) model of the semi-active electromagnetic suspension system (SAEMSS) performance and energy regeneration controlled by on-off and continuous damping control strategies. The nonlinear equations of the SAEMSS must therefore be extracted. The effects of the EMD characteristics on ride comfort, handling performance and road holding for the passive electromagnetic suspension system (PEMSS) are first analyzed and damping control strategies effects on the SAEMSS performance and energy regeneration are investigated next. The results obtained from the simulation show that the SAEMSS provides better performance and more energy regeneration than the PEMSS. Moreover, the results reveal that the on-off hybrid control strategy leads to better performance in comparison with the continuous skyhook control strategy, however, the energy regeneration of the continuous skyhook control strategy is more than that of the on-off hybrid control strategy (except for on-off skyhook control strategy).
The added viscoelastic dampers increase damping and stiffness of buildings and results in so called non-classical or non-proportional damping problem. In this system the eigenvectors of the undamped system may not diagonalize the damping matrix, and the system is generally analyzed by converting the equation of motion into a 2n first order state-space form. As this approach is complex and time-consuming compared to the classically damped problem, the system is often analyzed by neglecting the off-diagonal terms in the damping matrix. In this paper the theoretical background of the approximate approach is studied, and the vibration characteristics of a three-story shear building with a viscoelastic damper are investigated using the exact and approximate method. It is found that the approximate method may produce good result when the additional damping is small, but as the damping increases the error also increase.

Continuously controlled semi-active suspension system may improve ride and handling properties. Here, as a mechanism to control the fluid flow solenoid valve mechanism is introduced and added to the basic passive damper to create damping forces of the shock absorbers. The system may produce continuously controlled damping forces in both solenoid valve only and combination with passive shock absorber including fluid flow is studied, and then the combined model is added to the full vehicle model to evaluate its ride and handling performance. Finally, the simulation results are compared to the vehicle models having similar suspension system.

As the rotating speed of rotors is increased, the instability and power loss become serious problems. Gas bearings are introduced as a good solution to those problems. But in the development of gas bearings, high load capacity and high damping force to vibrations are required. In this study a new air bearing using leaf spring pad is introduced to improve load capacity and damping force. The experimental results of the leaf spring pad air bearings show high load capacity and high damping forces. And the results show that leaf spring pad air bearings can be simultaneously acted as radial and thrust bearings
