  • This paper presents a novel power control strategy for PWM current-source rectifiers (CSRs) in the stationary frame based on the instantaneous power theory. In the proposed control strategy, a virtual resistance based on the capacitor voltage feedback is used to realize the active damping. In addition, the proportional resonant (PR) controller under the two-phase stationary coordinate is designed to track the ac reference current and to avoid the strong coupling brought about by the coordinate transformation. The limitations on improving steady-state performance of the PR controller is investigated and mitigated using a cascaded lead-lag compensator. In the z-domain, a straightforward procedure is developed to analyze and design the control-loop with the help of MATLAB/SISO software tools. In addition, robustness against parameter variations is analyzed. Finally, simulation and experimental results verify the proposed control scheme and design method.

  • The corrugated steel plate shear walls have recently been proposed to address the seismic issues associated with simple steel plate shear walls; however, stiffness, strength, and ductility of the corrugated shear walls are significantly affected by varying the corrugation geometry under seismic loading. The present study investigates steel shear walls' models with corrugated or simple infill plates subjected to monotonic and cyclic loads. The performance of the corrugated steel plate is evaluated and then compared to that of the simple steel plates by evaluating the damping ratios and energy dissipation capability. The effect of corrugation profile angle, the existence of an opening, and the corrugation subpanel length are numerically investigated after validation of the finite element modeling methodology. The results demonstrate that incorporating corrugated plates would lead to better seismic damping ratios, specifically in the case of opening existence inside of the infill plate. Specifically, the corrugation angle of $30^{\circ}$ decreases the ultimate strength, while increasing the initial stiffness and ductility. In addition, the subpanel length of 100 mm is found to be able to improve the overall performance of shear wall by providing each subpanel appropriate support for the adjacent subpanel, leading to a sufficient buckling resistance performance.

  • This paper aims to investigate the seismic characteristics of strip-type damping devices possessing optimized shapes for the moment-resisting mechanism throughout analytical and experimental studies. Predicting equations for initial stiffness and yielding strength were introduced and compared with analytical results obtained from finite element analyses (FEAs) using commercial FEA program ABAQUS. In order for establishing predicting equations, two idealized processes were considered and both predicting equations showed that they could provide enough approximations for seismic applications in building structures. Throughout experimental studies, it was noted that structural uncertainties on mild steels, connection details and structural types linking damping devices with building structures could interrupt predicting structural behavior of the devices. Also, it was observed that shear stress concentrations should be considered if shear yielding type devices are applied into building structures. Nevertheless, it was shown that structural conservatism can be established using the predicting equations and seismic applications of the damping devices can enhance the seismic performance of building structures efficiently in the viewpoint that they have high resistance to low-cycle fatigue failures.

  • To improve the seismic performance of suspended ceiling structures, various vibration-damping devices have been developed. However, the devices made of metals have a limit in that they cause large deformation and seriously damages the exterior of the suspended ceiling structure from the wall. As a results, their strengthening effect of the suspended ceiling structure was minimal. Thus, this study employed a spring and vibration-proof rubber effectively controlled vibrations without increasing horizontal seismic loads on the ceiling to enhance the seismic resistance of suspended ceiling structures. The objective of the study is to examine the dynamic properties of a seismic damping-isolation unit (SDI) with various details developed. The developed SDI was composed of a spring, embossed rubbers, and prestressed bolts, which were the main factors enhancing the damping effect. The shaking table tests were performed on eight SDI specimens produced with the number of layers of embossed rubber (ns), presence or absence of a spring, prestressed force magnitude introduced in bolts (fps), and mass weight (Wm) as the main parameters. To identify the enhancement effect of the SDI, the dynamic properties of the control specimen with a conventional hanger bolt were compared to those of the SDI specimens. The SDI specimens were effective in reducing the maximum acceleration (Ac max), acceleration amplification factor (αp), relative displacement (δR), and increasing the damping ratio (ξ) when compared to the control specimen. The Ac max, αp, and δR of the SDI specimens with two rubbers, spring, and fps of 0.1fby, where fby is the yielding strength of the screw bolt were 57.8%, 58.0%, and 61.9% lower than those of the conventional hanger bolt specimens, respectively, resulting in the highest ξ (=0.127). In addition, the αp of the SDI specimens was 50.8% lower than those specified in ASCE 7 and FEMA 356. Consequently, to accurately estimate the αp of the SDI specimens, a simple model was proposed based on the functions of fps, stiffness constant of the spring (K), Wm, and ns.

To examine the shock absorption, vibration resistance and compression resistance of 3D packaging material printed out by using TPU material, composite vibration, and packaging compression and drop tests were conducted. As the results of the tests, the 3D packaging material displayed vibration resistance that has been improved by approximately 10~20% based on the damping ratio of the composite vibration test, compression resistance performances that are more than 5 times higher, and shock absorption performance was also improved as the packaged object was not broken in the six-sided drop test. Based on these results, it is determined that it would be possible to secure the reusability of the ceramic packaging materials and simplify packaging techniques, and to present diversity in the packaging materials and packaging technologies.

  • In this paper, dynamic behavior of steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) by experimental method is discussed. Because of its improved ability to dissipate energy, impact resistance and fatigue behavior, SFRC has a better dynamic behavior than that of plain concrete. Dynamic behavior is influenced by longitudinal reinforcement ratio, volume and type of steel fiber, strength of concrete and the stress level. Impact resistance and fatigue behavior in the SFRC has been evaluated from dynamic experimental test data at various levels of cracked states in the elements.

  • Recently, consumption of magnesium alloys has increased especially in the 3C (computer, communication, camera) and automobile industries. The structural application of magnesium alloys has many advantages due to their low densities, high specific strength, excellent damping and anti-eletromagnetic properties, and easy recycling. However, practical application of these alloys has been limited to narrow uses of mild condition, because they are inferior in corrosion resistance and wear resistance due to their high chemical reactivity and low hardness. Various wet and dry processes are being used or are under development to enhance alloy surface properties. Various conversion coating and anodizing methods have been developed in a view of eco-friendly concept. The conventional technologies, such as diffusion coating, sol-gel coating, hydrothermal treatment, and organic coating, are expected to be newly applicable to magnesium alloys. Surface treatments for metallic luster or coloring are suggested using the control of the micro roughness. This report reviews the recent R&D trends and achievements in surface treatment technologies for magnesium alloys.

  • To improve the shock-resistance of piezoresistive high-g accelerometer, we propose a design of piezoresistive high-g accelerometer. The accelerometer employs special-shaped proof masses system with a cross gap. Four tiny sensing beams are bonded above the cross gap. The expression of the deformation, natural frequency and damping is deduced, and the structural parameters are optimized. The accelerometer structure is simulated and verified by finite element method (FEM) simulation. The results show that the range of the accelerometer can reach 200,000 g, the natural frequency is 453.6 kHz, and the cross-axis sensitivity of X-axis and Y-axis is 0.25% and 0.11%, respectively, which can apply to the measurement of high shock. Contrastively, the cross-axis sensitivity of X-axis and Y-axis is respectively, reduced by 93.2% and 96.9%. The sensitivity of our accelerometer is 0.88 μV/g. It is of great value for the application of piezoresistive high-g accelerometer with high shock-resistance.

  • Although the cable-stayed bridges with two I-type girders inherently do not have good aerodynamic characteristics, a lot of the bridges with this type girders are constructed in Korea recently because of an economical merit. This paper investigated the aerodynamic characteristics of the cable-stayed bridges with two I-type girders. Section model tests were conducted in order to investigate the aerodynamic behaviors of this section with varying of the angles of attack, turbulence intensity and damping ratios. Two deck section configurations with different torsional stiffness were studied under construction and after completion respectively. Three types of the fairings were investigated to improve the aerodynamic characteristics of the bridges. The result of this study showed that the traditional section model test in uniform flow estimates the aerodynamic behavior rather pessimistically. The wind induced responses of the bridges were severely varied in accordance with the turbulence intensity and the structural damping ratio. The proposed fairing reduced the magnitude of the vortex-shedding vibrations and buffeting responses. It also increased the wind speed at which flutter occurs. It is expected that these investigations would provide a lot of information for the design of the cable stayed bridges with two I-type girders regarding wind resistance.

  • Recently, there has been increased attention to the development of new plant cultivars with enhanced resistance to biotic and abiotic stress. To develop ginseng cultivars with such traits, systematic breeding programs and comprehensive field studies are prerequisites. In this study, we applied a pure-line selection method to identify a ginseng cultivar with enhanced stress resistance. Phenotypic and agronomic characteristics, seed yield, and physiological responses to biotic and abiotic stresses were investigated according to the guidelines of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). In the newly developed 'Kowon' cultivar, the time of emergence, flowering, and berry maturity were intermediate between those of the controls, 'Yunpoong' and 'Chunpoong'. The stem length of 'Kowon' was intermediate, whereas the root length was shorter and the main root diameter was greater than those of 'Chunpoong'. In local adaptability tests conducted in three regions, the yield of 'Kowon' was $666kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$; 27% and 4% higher than that of 'Chunpoong' and 'Yunpoong'. Diseases such as Alternaria blight, Phytophthora blight, mulberry mealybug, and nematode infestation did not occur in 'Kowon'; and it also exhibited moderate resistance to damping-off and anthracnose. In these cases, yellow spots occurred on aerial parts and the rusty skin of the root, and it exhibited moderate resistance at high temperatures. Our study demonstrates that 'Kowon', which has a high root weight and enhanced biotic/abiotic stress resistance, is a superior cultivar that could increase farmers' income.
