Semi-active suspension systems are greatly expected to be in the mainstream of future controlled suspensions for passenger cars. In this study, a continuous variable damper for a passenger car suspension is developed, which is controlled actively and exhibits high performance with light weight, low cost, and low energy consumption. To get fast response of the damper, reverse damping mechanism is adapted, and to get small pressure change rate after blow-off, a pilot controlled proportional valve is designed and analyzed. The reverse continuous variable damper is designed as a HS-SH damper that offers good body control with reduced transferred input force from tire, compared with any other type of suspension system. The damper structure is designed, so that rebound and compression damping force can be tuned independently, of which variable valve is placed externally. The rate of pressure change with respect to the flow rate after blow-off becomes smooth when the fixed orifice size increases, which means that the blow-off slope is controllable using the fixed orifice size. The damping force variance is wide and continuous, and is controlled by the spool opening, of which scheme is usually adapted in proportional valves. The reverse continuous variable damper developed in this study is expected to be utilized in the semi-active suspension systems in passenger cars after its performance and simplicity of the design is confirmed through real car test.

An experimental study of the characteristics of the repulsiveytype magnetic bearing using high Tc superconductor is presented. In field cooling superconductor has the position-stability due to a flux pinning effect and the strong damping due to hysterisis, while in zero field cooling it has the only strong repulsive force due to Meissner effect. Lift force in superconducting levitation has a hysterisis characteristics, and it is the dissipation of energy, the mechanism of damping. As the relative linear velocity between a magnet and a superconductor increases, the area of the hysterisis loop becomes smaller. It means the decrease of damping. In field cooling, the static stiffness is very nonlinear in smaller than initial gap, but almost linear in larger than initial gap.

Experiments have been performed to investigate fluid-elastic instability of tube bundles, subjected to twophase cross flow. Fluid-elastic is the most important vibration excitation mechanism for heat exchanger tube bundles subjected to the cross flow. The test section consists of cantilevered flexible cylinder(s) and rigid cylinders of normal square array. From a practical design point of view, fluid-elastic instability may be expressed simply in terms of dimensionless flow velocity and dimensionless mass-damping parameter. For dynamic instability of cylinder rows, added mass, damping and the threshold flow velocity are evaluated. The Fluid-elastic instability coefficient is calculated and then compared to existing results given for tube bundles in normal square array.
In order to study the soil seasonal dynamic characteristics in the regions with four distinct seasons, the soil dynamic triaxial experiments were conducted by considering the environmental temperature range from -30℃ to 30℃. The results demonstrate that the dynamic soil properties in four seasons can change greatly. Firstly, the dynamic triaxial experiments were performed to obtain the dynamic stress-strain curve, elastic modulus, and damping ratio of soil, under different confining pressures and temperatures. Then, the experiments also obtain the dynamic cohesion and internal friction angle of the clay under the initial strain, and the changing rule was summarized. Finally, the results show that the dynamic elastic modulus and dynamic cohesion will increase significantly when the clay is frozen; as the temperature continues to decrease, this increasing trend will gradually slow down, and the dynamic damping ratio will go down when the freezing temperature decreases. In this paper, the change mechanism is objectively analyzed, which verifies the reliability of the conclusions obtained from the experiment.

In this paper, 2-DOF vehicle suspension system with a semiactive on-off damper was studied for improving the ride comfort. It is known that a nonlinear hydraulic damper, which generates force proportional to the square of the relative velocity, can describe the actual fluid resisting type damper more properly than the traditional viscous damping model. On the other hand, hydraulic damper adoption in analysis makes the system nonlinear and causes difficulties to get the system response. In this work, time domain direct integration method was used to calculate system displacement and acceleration. first of all, the response of the suspension system experiencing a given road profile was optimized by Lagrangian multiplier method within the range of given damping coefficients. The appropriate on-loaf damping values were obtained by averaging the already calculated optimum damping coefficients from Lagrangian techniques. The criterion to control the on-off mechanism was determined by examining the suspension efficiency. It was found that the best out of practically applicable criteria is following the sign (positive and negative) of the multiplication of relative displacement and velocity. Judging from the theoretical calculations, it was proved that the semiactive on-off damper can increase suspension efficiency as much as 8-11% in object function.
The aeroelastic stability of a long-span suspension footbridge with a bluff deck (prototype section) was examined through static and dynamic wind tunnel tests using a 1:10 scale sectional model of the main girder, and the corresponding aerodynamic countermeasures were proposed in order to improve the stability. First, dynamic tests of the prototype sectional model in vertical and torsional motions were carried out at three attack angles (α = 3°, 0°, -3°). The results show that the galloping instability of the sectional model occurs at α = 3° and 0°, an observation that has never been made before. Then, the various aerodynamic countermeasures were examined through the dynamic model tests. It was found that the openings set on the vertical web of the prototype section (web-opening section) mitigate the galloping completely for all three attack angles. Finally, static tests of both the prototype and web-opening sectional models were performed to obtain the aerodynamic coefficients, which were further used to investigate the galloping mechanism by applying the Den Hartog criterion. The total damping of the prototype and web-opening models were obtained with consideration of the structural and aerodynamic damping. The total damping of the prototype model was negative for α = 0° to 7°, with the minimum value being -1.07%, suggesting the occurrence of galloping, while that of the web-opening model was positive for all investigated attack angles of α = -12° to 12°.
Applying a general Galerkin FE lubrication analysis method to spiral groove dry gas seals, this study intends to analyze in detail the effects of groove design parameters, such as a spiral angle, groove width ratio, groove radius ratio, groove depth ratio, and groove taper ratio, on the lubrication performances of an opening force, leakage, axial stiffness and damping, and angular stiffness and damping at low and high rotating speeds: 3,600 and 15,000 nm. Results show that, for the primary design consideration performances such as the opening force and axial and angular stiffnesses, a spiral angle of $25^{\circ}$, a groove width ratio of 0.46, a groove radius ratio of 1.1, a groove depth ratio of 1.0, and a groove taper ratio of 0.0 are preferred. Where the recommended relatively low values of groove depth and taper ratios are to keep the axial and angular dampings positive or higher than 0 particularly at the high rotating speed.

In the built-up structure consisting of a stiff beam and a flexible plate, Grice showed that the plate behaves as an energy absorber in narrow frequency bands(called plate blocking effect). This paper deals with such beam-plate coupled structures, where the plate is an energy absorber and the excited beam is an energy path. It is found that such energy dissipation can occur in the relatively broad bands, if different stiffnesses are used in the rectangular plate. It was experimentally verified by Heckl that the energies in terms of one-third octave band averages transferred to the plate(or dissipated in the plate) increase for increased plate damping. This Paper, however, shows that the energy absorption suddenly reduces at the certain narrow frequency bands where the plate damping effect upon the coupled beam is maximum. Also, in order to minimize energy transfer through the beam in terms of one-third octave band averages, it is advantageous to increase the plate damping closer to the excitation point All these results are based on the wane method.
We explore the similarity and difference of the quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) observed during the solar and stellar X-ray flares. For this, we identified 59 solar QPPs in the X-ray observed by the Reuven Ramaty High-Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) and 52 stellar QPPs from X-ray Multi Mirror Newton observatory (XMM-Newton). The Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) method and least-square-fit with the damped sine function are applied to obtain the periods and damping times of the QPPs. We found that (1) the periods and damping times of the stellar QPPs are 7.80 and 13.80 min, which are comparable with those of the solar QPPs 0.55 and 0.97 min. (2) The ratio of the damping times to the periods observed in the stellar QPPs are found to be statistically identical to the solar QPPs, (3) The damping times are well describe by the power law. The power indices of the solar and stellar QPPs are $0.891{\pm}0.172$ and $0.953{\pm}0.198$, which are consistent with the previous results. Thus, we conclude that the underlying mechanism responsible for the stellar QPPs are the natural oscillations of the flaring or adjacent coronal loops as in the Sun.
The electrically excited synchronous generator (EESG) is applied in wind turbine systems recently. In an EESG control system, electrical torque is affected by stator flux and rotor current. So the control system is more complicated than that of the permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Thus, the higher demanding of the control system is required especially in case of wind turbine mechanical resonance. In this paper, the mechanism of rotor speed resonant phenomenon is introduced from the viewpoint of mechanics firstly, and the characteristics of an effective damping torque are illustrated through system eigenvalues analysis. Considering the variables are tightly coupled, the four-order small signal equation for torque is derived considering stator and rotor control systems with regulators, and the bode plot of the closed loop transfer function is analyzed. According to the four-order mathematical equation, the stator flux, stator current, and electrical torque responses are derived by torque reference step and ramp in MATLAB from a pure mathematical deduction, which is identical with the responses in PSCAD/EMTDC simulation results. At last, the simulation studies are carried out in PSCAD software package to verify the resonant damping control strategy used in the EESG wind turbine system.
