  • A three node flat triangular element incorporating Layerwise Zig-Zag Theory(HZZT) is developed suitable for analyzing damped laminated composite structures. Using an interdependent kinematic relation, the higher order shear rotations are replaced by in-plane displacements, a transverse displacement and section rotations, which result in three translations and two rotations. Natural frequencies and modal loss factors of cantilevered laminated plates with embedded damping layers are calculated with the zig-zag triangular element and compared to the experimental results and MSC/NASTRAN results using a layered combination of plate and solid elements.

  • There are several ways of decreasing the vibration energy of structures. One of which is special damping layers made of various viscoelastic materials are widely applied in structures subjected to dynamic loading. In this study, a cantilever beam, partially covered by damping a constraining layers, is investigated by using Finite Element method (FEM). The frequency and system loss factor are evaluated. The effects of different physical and geometrical parameters on the natural frequency and system loss factors are discussed.

  • It is of great significance to utilize a landing mechanism to explore an asteroid. A landing mechanism named ALISE (Asteroid Landing and In Situ Exploring) for asteroid with soft surface is presented. The landing dynamic in the first turning stage, which represents the landing performance of the landing mechanism, is built by a Lagrange equation. Three key parameters can be found influencing the landing performance: the retro-rocket thrust T, damping element damping $c_1$, and cardan element damping $c_2$. In this paper, the retro-rocket thrust T is solved with considering that the landing mechanism has no overturning in extreme landing conditions. The damping element damping c1 is solved by a simplified dynamic model. After solving the parameters T and $c_1$, the cardan element damping $c_2$ is calculated using the landing dynamic model, which is built by Lagrange equation. The validities of these three key parameters are tested by simulation. The results show a stable landing, when landing with the three estimated parameters T, $c_1$, and $c_2$. Therefore, the landing dynamic model and methods to estimate key parameters are reasonable, and are useful for guiding the design of the landing mechanism.

  • An accurate finite element (FE) model of a structure is essential for predicting reliably its dynamic characteristics. Such a model is used to predict the effects of structural modifications for dynamic design of the structure. These modifications may be imposed by design alterations for operating reasons. Most of the model updating techniques neglect damping and so these updated models can't be used for accurate prediction of vibration amplitudes. This paper deals with the basic formulation of damped finite element model updating method and its use for structural dynamic modifications. In this damped damped finite element model updating method, damping matrices are updated along with mass and stiffness matrices. The damping matrices are updated by updating the damping coefficients. A case involving actual measured data for the case of F-shaped test structure, which resembles the skeleton of a drilling machine is used to evaluate the effectiveness of damped FE model updating method for accurate prediction of the vibration levels and thus its use for structural dynamic modifications. It can be concluded from the study that damped updated FE model updating can be used for structural dynamic modifications with confidence.

  • A modified 16-node element for composite plate has been proposed and compared with the 20-node element to check the validity of it. The fields of numerical inspection include mode analysis and specific damping analysis. By symetrizing the conventional unsymmetric damping matrix in the analysis of specific damping capacity, we could compute the specific damping capacity and make a program, effectively. In addition, we could predict the errors caused by reduction of integration order in thickness direction depending upon the number of layers.

  • In the paper the analysis of natural vibrations of the transmission line with use of spectral elements and the laboratory experiments is performed. The purpose of the investigation is to analyze the natural vibrations of the transmission line and compare with the results obtained in the numerical simulations. Particular attention is paid to the hysteretic and aerodynamic damping analysis. Sensitivity of the wave number is performed for changing of the tension force, as well as for the different damping parameters. The numerical model is made using the Spectral Element Method. In the spectral model, for various parameters of stiffness, damping and tension force, the system response is checked and compared with the results of the accelerations obtained in the measurements. A frequency response functions (FRF) are calculated. The credibility of the model is assessed through a validation process carried out by comparing graphical plots of FRF and time history analysis and numerical values expressing differences in acceleration amplitude (MSG), phase angle differences (PSG) and differences in acceleration and phase angle total (CSG) values. The next aspect constituting the purpose of this paper is to present the wide possibilities of modelling and simulation of slender conductors using the Spectral Element Method. The obtained results show good accuracy in the range of both experimental measurements as well as simulation analysis. The paper emphasizes the ease with which the sensitivity of the conductor and its response to changes in density of spectral mesh division, tensile strength or material damping can be studied.

  • A study on optimal placement of constrained layer damping treatment for vibration control of automotive panels is presented. The effectiveness of damping treatment depends upon design parameters such as choice of damping materials, locations and size of the treatment. This paper proposes a CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) methodology based on finite element analysis to optimize damping treatment. From the equivalent modeling technique, it is found that the best damping performance occurs as the viscoelstic patch is placed by means of the modal strain energy method of bare structural panels to identify flexible regions, which in turn facilitates optimizations of damping treatment with respect to location and size. Different configurations of partially applied damping layer treatment have been analyzed for their effectiveness in realizing maximum system damping with minimum mass of the applied damping material. Moreover, simulated frequency response function of the automotive roof with and without damping treatments are compared, which show the benefits of applying damping treatment. Finally, the optimized damping treatment configuration is validated by comparing the locations and the size of the treatment with that of an experimental modal test conducted on roof compartment.

  • Damping as a material property plays an important role in decreasing dynamic response of structures. However, very little is known about the evaluation and application of the actual damping of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Confined Reinforced Concrete (FRP-C RC) material which is widely adopted in civil engineering at present. This paper first proposes a stress-dependent damping model for FRP-C RC material using a validated Finite Element Model (FEM), then based on this damping-stress relation, an iterative scheme is developed for the computations of the non-linear damping and dynamic response of FRP-C RC columns at any given harmonic exciting frequency. Numerical results show that at resonance, a considerable increase of the loss factor of the FRP-C RC columns effectively reduces the dynamic response of the columns, and the columns with lower concrete strength, FRP volume ratio and axial compression ratio or higher longitudinal reinforcement ratio have stronger damping values, and can relatively reduce the resonant response.

  • The vehicle design engineers have studied the method of applying damping materials to the vehicle bodies by computer simulations and experimental methods in order to improve the vibration and noise characteristics of the vehicles. The unconstrained layer damping, being concerned with this study, has two layers(base layer and damping layer) and proyides vibration control of the base layer through extensional damping. Generally this kind of surface damping method is effectively used in reducing structural vibration at frequencies beyond 150Hz. The most important thing is how to apply damping treatment with respect to location and size of the damping material. To solve these problems, the current experimental methods have technical limits which are cumbersome, time consuming, and expensive. This Paper proposes a method based on finite element method and it employes averaged ESE(element strain energy) percent of total of dash panel assembly for 1/1 octave band frequency range by MSC/NASTRAN. The regions of high ESE percent of total are selected as proposed location of damping treatment. The effect of damping treatment is analyzed by comparing the frequency response function of the SPCC bare Panel and the damping treated panels.
