The vibration of a vehicle, which is caused by and transmitted from the engine, has significant effect on the ride comfort and the dynamic characteristics of the engine mount system have direct influence on the vibration and noise of the vehicle. This paper examines the body shake caused by the engine excitation force on engine key on/off of a medium truck by experiment and simulation. The analysis model consists of the engine, a body including the frame, front and rear suspensions and tires. The force element between the body and the suspension is modeled as a combination of a suspension spring and a damper. The engine shake obtained from the experiment was compared with the result of the computer simulation, and by using the verified computer model, parametric study of the body shake on engine key on/off is performed with changing the stiffness of an engine mount rubber, the engine mount angle, and the position of engine mounts.

In this paper hair bundle feature model and integration method for hair cell models were proposed. The proposed hair bundle feature model was based on spring-damper-mass model. Input of integrated vestibular hair cell model was frequency and output was interspike interval of hair cell that was reflected the feature of hair bundles. Irregular afferents that had a great gain variation showed reduction of negative stiffness section. Regular afferents that had a small gain variation, however, showed same feature with base negative stiffness feature. As a result, integrated vestibular hair cell model showed almost the same modeling data with experimental data in the modeled eleven frequency bands. It is verified that the proposed model is a good model for hair bundle feature modeling.
A PTO (power-take-off) mechanism by using relative heave motions between a floating buoy and its inner mass (magnet or amateur) is suggested. The inner power take-off system is characterized by a mass with linear stiffness and damping. A vertical truncated cylinder is selected as a buoy and a special station-keeping system is proposed to minimize pitch motions while not affecting heave motions. By numerical examples, it is seen that the maximum power can actually be obtained at the optimal spring and damper condition, as predicted by the developed WEC(wave energy converter) theory. Then, based on the developed theory, several design strategies are proposed to further enhance the maximum PTO, which includes the intentional mismatching among heave natural frequency of the buoy, natural frequency of the inner dynamic system, and peak frequency of input wave spectrum. By using the intentional mismatching strategy, the generated power is actually increased and the required damping value is significantly reduced, which is a big advantage in designing the proposed WEC with practical inner LEG (linear electric generator) system.

Seismic dissipation devices can play a crucial role in mitigating earthquake damages, loss of life and post-event repair and downtime costs. This research investigates the use of ring springs with high-force-to-volume (HF2V) dissipaters to create damage-free, recentring connections and structures. HF2V devices are passive rate-dependent extrusion-based devices with high energy absorption characteristics. Ring springs are passive energy dissipation devices with high self-centring capability to reduce the residual displacements. Dynamic behaviour of a system with nonlinear structural stiffness and supplemental hybrid damping via HF2V devices and ring spring dampers is used to investigate the design space and potential. HF2V devices are modelled with design forces equal to 5% and 10% of seismic weight and ring springs are modelled with loading stiffness values of 20% and 40% of initial structural stiffness and respective unloading stiffness of 7% and 14% of structural stiffness (equivalent to 35% of their loading stiffness). Using a suite of 20 design level earthquake ground motions, nonlinear response spectra for 8 different configurations are generated. Results show up to 50% reduction in peak displacements and greater than 80% reduction in residual displacements of augmented structure compared to the baseline structure. These gains come at a cost of a significant rise in the base shear values up to 200% mainly as a result of the force contributed by the supplemental devices.
Since its introduction (e.g., [4, 6]), virtual coupling technique has been de facto way to connect a haptic device with a virtual proxy for haptic rendering and control. However, because of the single dependence on spring-damper feedback action, this virtual coupling suffers from the degraded transparency particularly during contact tasks when large device/proxy-forces are involved. In this paper, we propose a novel virtual coupling technique, which, by utilizing passive decomposition, reduces device-proxy position deviation even during the contact tasks while also scaling down (or up) the apparent inertia of the coordinated device-proxy. By doing so, we can significantly improve transparency between multiple degree of freedom (possibly nonlinear) haptic device and virtual proxy. In other to use passive decomposition, disturbance observer of [3] is adopted to estimate human force with some dead-zone modification to avoid "winding-up" force estimation in the presence of device torque saturation. Some preliminary experimental results are also given to illustrate efficacy of the proposed technique.
The initial impact at foot strike is produced by a slider type mechanical model, which can be measured using a force platform to evaluate various shoes. The lower extremity and foot motion was filmed by a 16mm high speed movie camera and several points on the rear half of the shoe and those near the trochanter and the lateral epicondyle were digitized to provide the linear and angular positions and velocities during impact. With these observed kinematics, a slider type foot strike simulator composed of guide rail and sliding dummy is designed. The simulator system makes the artificial foot of the dummy with running shoe on it to follow the foot strike motion. The dummy has the relevant mass-spring-damper system modeled after McMahon's. The motion of the model is drived by the gravity force and the generated motion alone with the ground reaction forces are monitored by the same procedures afore mentioned producing the initial foot strike impact similar to the onto observed in human gait.

Acoustic design parameters of a Helmholtz resonator are studied experimentally and numerically for acoustic stability in a model acoustic tube. According to standard acoustic-test procedures, acoustic-pressure signals are measured. Quantitative acoustic properties of sound absorption coefficient are evaluated and thereby, the acoustic damping capacity of the resonator is characterized. Helmholtz resonator on spring-damper system use were understanding for acoustic damping. The length of orifice and the volume of cavity of resonator are selected as design parameters for tuning of the resonator. Acoustic- damping capacity of the resonator increases with its cavity volume. And orifice length as increases with acoustic damping capacity was decreased.

Transmission of unwanted vibration to sensitive systems can cause various problems including performance degradation and system malfunction. The most common approach to limit the transmission of harmful vibration disturbances to the sensitive system is adapting passive vibration isolator. The classical passive vibration isolator comprising a viscous damper and spring element in parallel, however, exhibits conflicting performance characteristics in that low amplification at the resonance, which is desirable, can only be achieved at the sacrifice of vibration isolation performance in high frequency region, which is undesirable. In this paper, vibration isolation characteristics of various passive isolator schemes in literature to circumvent this conflict are introduced and compared.

Failure of tube bundles due to excessive flow-induced vibrations continues to affect the performance of nuclear power plant Early experimental studies concentrated on rigid structures and later investigators dealt with elastic structures because of their importance in many engineering fields. On the other hand, much less numerical work has been carried out, because of the numerical complexity associated with the problem. Conventional approaches usually decoupled the flow solution from the structural problem. The present numerical study proposes the methodology in analyzing the fluidelastic instability occurring in tube bundles by coupling the Computational fluid Dynamics (C%) with the tube equation of motions. The motion of the structures is modeled by a spring-damper-mass system that allows transnational motion in two directions (a two-degree-of-freedom system). The fluid motion and the cylinder response are solved in an iterative way, so that the interaction between the fluid and the structure can be accounted for property. The aim of the present work is to predict the fluidelstic instability of tube bundles and the associated phenomena, such as the response of the cylinder, the unsteady lift and drag on the cylinder, the vortex shedding frequency.
The structure of the variable liquid column oscillator(VLCO) is analogous to that of the tuned liquid column damper used to suppress oscillatory motion in large structures like tall buildings and cargo ships. VLCO is using the technology which absorbs high potential energy made by process of accelerated motions effect of air spring by installation of inner air chamber. So, the application of VLCO can improve the efficiency of energy than that of wave energy converters made in Pelamis Company. In this research, experiments were performed for the models which have two different liquid column sizes. In order to find out the biggest motion response, two major conditions are taken into account. Two conditions are to open(or close) the valves and to differentiate the height of the liquid column.
