  • An experimental device was designed to control the opening of a damper via operating the folding blade drive of the device and to control the amount of air flowing through the damper. In addition, an inverter was installed in the blower to control its fan rotation speed and hence the amount of air flowing through the damper. An experimental study was conducted on the opening of the folding blade damper and changes in the rotational speed of the blower. From the results, the theoretical air volume of the folding blade damper and experimental air volume were observed to be in good agreement within an error range of ±3%. As the mass flow rate of the air passing through the folding blade damper increases proportionally with the changes in damper opening and fan rotation speed, the performance of the damper can be controlled proportionally. The mass flow rate was also observed to increase linearly; therefore, the mass flow rate of the air passing through the folding blade damper increases proportionally with changes in the rotation speed of the blower, such that the performance of the damper is proportional to a constant air volume even with varying rotation speeds of the blower.

  • In chemical, medical or biology laboratories Fume Hoods are basic facilities which can protect researchers from dangerous gas as blowing the contaminated air outside. After the air inside the laboratory room is sucked into the hume hood, then, it is blew out by a fan rotated by an AC induction motor. In addition, a damper controls the inside opening of a duct, which the air flows through. The face velocity, air velocity through the front door, have to be kept constant as the set value even though the opening of the door is varied. However, conventional fume hood used to be operated by operator's manual switches. So that, in this paper an automatic control system is developed which controls the face velocity by adjusting the rotating speed of the blow motor and the opening of the damper. Experiments show that this developed system can be used at such laboratories.

  • State feedback with integral control for a variable air volume(VAV) unit which is recently taken notice of for the energy efficiency and saving in the building is studied to investigate the performance of the digital control methodology for the possible practical application. The digital controller which acquires the targat zone temperature and the air flow rate of the supplied air to the zone controls the opening of the damper in the VAV unit. Simulation results are performed for the conditions including reference changes and external thermal variations. In the simulation. simplified conditioned zone and the damper actuator modelling is considered. and relationships between controller gain Parameters and the system dynamics are investigated.

  • In this study, it was conducted to design each components of vane damper for industrial flow control fan and the flow rates were analysed by experimental and numerical method. Through environmental test, it could be confirmed that the designed vane damper was appropriate. Also, almost identical results with test could be drawn from numerical method. Finally, flow rates of electric and pneumatic actuator were measured by test. As the results, difference of flow rate according to opening ratio was smaller in pneumatic actuator than that in electric actuator.

  • The amount of inflowing Air into the boiler has controlled by manipulating the opening of valve, damper and vane, as fan operated by induction motor operats at constant speed, but these control methods are not efficient. Thus VVVf(Variable Voltage Variable Frequency) control of fan has selected to improve efficiency and to acquire power savings. Control system of Air Flow is affected by nonlinearity caused by load variation, vane opening, etc. The analysis of control parameter causing nonlinearity is needed to acquire optimal control and excellent transient response. This paper provides modeling of boiler with various load conditions and vane opening, and analysis of this system.

  • The pressurized smoke control system is important for fire safety in building because it is directly concerned with egress time of people. Even though the damper plays an essential role in the pressurized smoke control system, the phenomena of backflow smoke occurs for a certain the damper position. The research for a position of damper effects on distribution of air flow at the fire door is not performed. In this study, numerical simulation using FDS 5.5 was carried out to analyze the effect of the position of damper on flow distribution at the fire door. To simulate real situation, effects of opening and closing of fire door was considered. As a result, when HRR was between 200 kW and 400 kW, in the case which the damper was on the opposite wall of the fire door, the back flow to the vestibules was large compared to the two other cases of damper position. But when HRR was above 400 kW, Effect on damper position was not occurred.

  • An experimental study on the automation of the coffee roasting process was conducted. For this study, a temperature sensor, controllers, and motors were added to a manually operated coffee roaster. The temperature, time, and exhausting damper control were selected as the control parameters. The thermocouple measurements were severely influenced by the thermocouple size and location of the roaster. As a result, the standard thermocouple size and location of the roaster were experimentally set to show a similar trend of temperature change by using a previously installed thermometer. A standard roasting process was chosen through repeated roasting experiments and the advice of a roasting expert. The automation of the roasting process was successfully executed using temperature criteria, such as the bean input and first and second crack occurrence, and by controlling the exhausting damper opening time. The control parameters and roaster skills can be used for similar types of roasters for process automation.

  • The ventilation system for the efficient operation of the building services systems in the ventilation plan of super high-rise buildings is used to combine smoke control systems. This study evaluated models of super high-rise buildings with four basement levels and 59 stories and investigated the pressure distribution of each floor by the smoke driving forces by numerical analysis. The smoke driving forces on the building of analytical model was analyzed to determine the effects of the ventilation plan and smoke control plane. In addition, when a combination with ventilation and smoke control of the kitchen ventilation damper in the ventilation plan of analysis model building was designed based on the these results, the relationship between the opening and closing force of the damper and smoke driving combined forces to act on the design pressure of the damper by a motion analysis simulation. The driving units of the damper were selected from the analytical results.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the stack effect of the staircase and the failure to take into account the opening of the outside door of the staircase, which are the disadvantages of the existing smoke control only vestibule. As a result of the study, the new vestibule and the staircase simultaneous smoke control are equipped with an exhaust flap damper with an effective opening area of about 0.25 m2 in the upper part of the staircase, and a ventilator-type air supply fan of about 5 m3/s in the lower part, and take measures to prevent overpressure in the staircase. If you use the new simultaneous smoke control method of the vestibule and staircase, you can achieve the following effects. First, it is possible to open the external entrance door. Second, it can reduce the stack effect. Third, the staircase door closes automatically without fail. And a new method of preventing overpressure was proposed for the vestibule.

  • Semi-active suspension systems are greatly expected to be in the mainstream of future controlled suspensions for passenger cars. In this study, a continuous variable damper for a passenger car suspension is developed, which is controlled actively and exhibits high performance with light weight, low cost, and low energy consumption. To get fast response of the damper, reverse damping mechanism is adapted, and to get small pressure change rate after blow-off, a pilot controlled proportional valve is designed and analyzed. The reverse continuous variable damper is designed as a HS-SH damper that offers good body control with reduced transferred input force from tire, compared with any other type of suspension system. The damper structure is designed, so that rebound and compression damping force can be tuned independently, of which variable valve is placed externally. The rate of pressure change with respect to the flow rate after blow-off becomes smooth when the fixed orifice size increases, which means that the blow-off slope is controllable using the fixed orifice size. The damping force variance is wide and continuous, and is controlled by the spool opening, of which scheme is usually adapted in proportional valves. The reverse continuous variable damper developed in this study is expected to be utilized in the semi-active suspension systems in passenger cars after its performance and simplicity of the design is confirmed through real car test.
