  • A mechanical type pulsation dampener for the diaphragm metering pump has been developed. The pulsation pressure is an inevitable phenomenon for the positive displacement pump such as cam operated or solenoid operated metering pump. The pulsation pressure of the metering pump could be the noise source and would be harmful for the piping system which delivers hydraulic fluid. Developed pulsation dampener consists of three coil springs which have different spring constant and height each other. Depending on pressure magnitude of the piping system, total hydraulic pressure on damping diaphragm which compresses coil springs will be varied. Force equilibrium of the pulsation dampener will be set by manual by adjusting the compressed coil spring height. During the discharge stroke, pulsation dampener stores potential energy that is released as the pumping diaphragm back to an initial position during the suction stroke.

  • Aircraft can often be exposed to a variety of environments and vibrations such as engine, hydraulic pump, aerodynamic force. These may cause cracking and destruction of the mechanical structure and sub-components by high-cycle fatigue. The axial piston type pump which is usually applied to the aircraft hydraulic pump can be necessarily accompanied by the fluid pulsation by continuous rotation of the axial piston. The fatigue crack was identified at the dampener fitting welding zone to prevent vibration damping during the running of aircraft equipped with this type of pulsation hydraulic pump. In order to understand the root cause of this matter, fracture and component analyses were carried out and also integral type dampener fitting was applied to prevent recurrence of the crack as a subject of design improvements. Structural integrity stress analysis, fatigue analysis, qualification test and aircraft system equipped test was conducted to verify the design validity in application to integral type dampener fitting. The test results were sufficiently satisfactory with the demand lifetime of the material from the various types of test as conducted and the subject of design improvement in this study could be objectively evaluated that shall be applied to the operational aircraft.

  • This paper reports the 1-D fluid transient simulation results of the discharge flow conditions in a 6-cylinder reciprocating slurry pump. Two discharge manifold configurations are studied comparatively; a case with a hexagon shaped discharge manifold where each cylinder discharges at a single vertex, and a case where all the cylinders discharges are lumped together into a tank shaped manifold. In addition, the study examines the effect of two pulsation mitigation measures in the case of hexagonal manifold; a single inline orifice in one of the hexagon sides and a volumetric dampener at the manifold outlet. The study establishes the pressure and flow fluctuation characteristics of each configuration and decouples the pulsation characteristics of the pump and the discharge manifold.

  • The purpose of this paper was to identify the mechanism that caused abnormal vibration and noise on the piping system connected to discharge flow of BFP(Boiler Feed water Pump) in a coal fired power plant, and to develop the device that can reduce the level of abnormal vibration and noise. Major results of this project can be summarized as follows: First, we analyzed the acoustic mode for the discharge piping of BFP to trace a path of the noise, and assumed that noise and vibration on the piping system can be related with length of pipe. Second, a minimized model of the piping system was set up to simulate abnormal vibration and noise within the specific range of operating frequencies, and as a result we confirmed that the acoustic mode affected the piping system considerably. Finally the test device which can reduce the level of abnormal noise and vibration was built to verify validity applying for the piping system. Then we concluded that the noise and vibration generated from the piping system was attributed to the acoustic resonance in piping system, and so developed new device which can reduce the level of noise and vibration under 40%.
