  • This paper presents unprecedented damped oscillation behaviours of a precast steel-concrete composite slab panel for track support. The steel-concrete composite slab track is an innovative slab track, a form of ballastless track which is becoming increasingly attractive to asset owners as they seek to reduce lifecycle costs and deal with increasing rail traffic speeds. The slender nature of the slab panel due to its reduced depth of construction makes it susceptible to vibration problems. The aim of the study is driven by the need to address the limited research available to date on the dynamic behaviour of steel-concrete composite slab panels for track support. Free vibration analysis of the track slab has been carried out using ABAQUS. Both undamped and damped eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes have been extracted using the Lancsoz method. The fundamental natural frequencies of the slab panel have been identified together with corresponding mode shapes. To investigate the sensitivity of the natural frequencies and mode shapes, parametric studies have been established, considering concrete strength and mass and steel's modulus of elasticity. This study is the world first to observe crossover phenomena that result in the inversion of the natural orders without interaction. It also reveals that replacement of the steel with aluminium or carbon fibre sheeting can only marginally reduce the natural frequencies of the slab panel.

  • In the case of the non-proportionally damped system such as the soil-structure interaction system, the structural control system and composite structures, the eigenproblem with the damping matrix should be necessarily performed to obtain the exact dynamic response. However, most of the eigenvalue analysis methods such as the subspace iteration method and the Lanczos method may miss some eigenvalues in the required ones. Therefore, the eigenvalue analysis method must include a technique to check the missed eigenvalues to become the practical tools. In the case of the undamped or proportionally damped system the missed eigenvalues can easily be checked by using the well-known Sturm sequence property, while in the case of the non-proportionally damped system a checking technique has not been developed yet. In this paper, a technique of checking the missed eigenvalues for the eigenproblem with the damping matrix is proposed by applying the argument principle. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, two numerical examples are considered.

  • This paper describes the design and development of a novel semiconductor-based solid-state switch for damped oscillating voltage test system. The proposed switch is configured as two identical series-connected switch stacks, each of which comprising 10 series-connected IGBT function units. Each unit consists of one IGBT, a gate driver, and an auxiliary voltage sharing circuit. A single switch stack can block 20 kV-rated high voltage, and two stacks in series are proven applicable to 30 kV-rated high voltage. The turn-on speed of the switch is approximately 250 ns. A flyback topology-based power supply system with a front-end power factor correction is built for the drive circuit by loosely inductively coupling each unit with a ferrite core to the primary side of a power generator to obtain the advantages of galvanic isolation and compact size. After the simulation, measurement, and estimation of the parasitic effect on the gate driver, a prototype is assembled and tested under different operating regimes. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the developed prototype.

  • Empirical mode decomposition(EMD) method has been recently proposed to analyze non-linear and non-stationary data. This method allows the decomposition of one-dimensional signals into intrinsic mode functions(IMFs) and is used to calculate a meaningful multi-component instantaneous frequency. In this paper, it is assumed that each mode of damped vibration signal could be well separated in the form of IMF by EMD. In this case, we can have a new powerful method to calculate natural frequencies and dampings from damped vibration signal which usually has multiple modes. This proposed method has been verified by both simulation and experiment. The results by EMD method whichhas used only output vibration data are almost identical to the results by FRF method which has used both input and output data, thereby proving usefulness and accuracy of the proposed method.

  • The main objective of this paper is to propose a new Finite Element (FE) model updating technique for damped beam structures. The present method consists of a FE model updating, a Degree of Freedom (DOF) reduction method and a damping matrix identification method. In order to accomplish the goal of this study, first, a sensitivity-based FE model updating method using the natural frequencies and the zero frequencies is introduced. Second, an Iterated Improved Reduced System (IIRS) technique is employed to reduce the number of DOF of FE model. Third, a damping matrix is estimated using modal damping ratios identified by a curve-fitting method and modified matrices which are obtained through the model updating and the DOF reduction. The proposed FE model updating method is verified using a real cantilever beam attached damping material on one side. The updated result shows that the proposed method can lead to accurate model updating of damped structures.

  • Three methods for design sensitivity analysis such as finite difference method(FDM), direct differentiation method(DDM) and adjoint variable method(AVM) are well known. FDM and DDM for design sensitivity analysis cost too much when the number of design variables is too large. An AVM is required to compute adjoint variables from the simultaneous linear system equation, the so-called adjoint equation. Because the adjoint equation is independent of the number of design variables, an AVM is efficient for when number of design variables is too large. In this study, AVM has been extended to the eigenproblem of damped systems whose eigenvlaues and eigenvectors are complex numbers. Moreover, this method is implemented into a commercial finite element analysis program by means of the semi-analytical method to show applicability of the developed method into practical structural problems. The proposed_method is compared with FDM and verified its accuracy for analytical and practical cases.

  • This paper presents a design parameter calculation methodology and its realization to construction for the damped oscillatory impulse current generator(ICG) modelled as damping factor $\alpha$. Matlab internal functions, "fzero" and "polyfit" are applied to find a which are solutions of second order nonlinear equation related with three wave parameters $T_{1},T_{2}$ and $I_{os}$. The calculation results for standard impulse current waveforms such as 4/10${\mu}s$, 8/20${\mu}s$ and 30/80${\mu}s$ show very good accuracy and this results make it possible to extend to generalization in the design of damped oscillatory lCG with any capacitor. 8/20${\mu}s$ ICG based on the calculated design circuit parameters is fabricated in consideration of the nonlinear load(MOV) variation. Comparisons of the tested waveforms with the designed estimation show error within 10% for the waveform tolerance recommended in IEC 60060-1 and IEEE std. C62.45.

  • This paper proposes and designs a new output filter called an LCFL filter for application to three phase three wire shunt active power filters (SAPF). This LCFL filter is derived from a traditional LCL filter by replacing its capacitor with a C-type filter, and then constructing an L-C-type Filter-L (LCFL) topology. The LCFL filter can provide better switching ripple attenuation capability than traditional passive damped LCL filters. The LC branch series resonant frequency of the LCFL filter is set at the switching frequency, which can bypass most of the switching harmonic current generated by a SAPF converter. As a result, the power losses in the damping resistor of the LCFL filter can be reduced when compared to traditional passive damped LCL filters. The principle and parameter design of the LCFL filter are presented in this paper, as well as a comparison to traditional passive damped LCL filters. Simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the theoretical analyses and effectiveness of the LCFL filter.

  • The localized surface-plasmon resonance has drawn great attention, due to its unique optical properties. In this work a general theoretical description of the dipole mode is proposed, using the forced damped harmonic oscillator model of free charges in an ellipsoid. The restoring force and driving force are derived in the quasistatic approximation under general conditions. In this model, metal is regarded as composed of free charges and bound charges. The bound charges form the dielectric background which has a dielectric function. Those free charges undergo a collective motion in the dielectric background under the driving force. The response of free charges will not be included in the dielectric function like the Drude model. The extinction and scattering cross sections as well as the damping coefficient from our model are verified to be consistent with those based on the Drude model. We introduce size effects and modify the restoring and driving forces by adding the dynamic depolarization factor and the radiation damping term to the depolarization factor. This model provides an intuitive physical picture as well as a simple theoretical description of the dipole mode of the localized surface-plasmon resonance based on free-charge collective motion.
