The protective effects of the ethylacetate fraction of persimmon leaves(PEF) against experimentally induced gastric mucosal damage and gastric ulcers were evaluated in ratss. In prophylatic study, 100 mg/kg ethylacetate fraction of persimmon leaves (PEFH) exhibited a total protection of 73.8% and 65.7% against HCl-ethanol and 0.2N NaOH-induced gastric mucosal membrane lesions, respectively, which was superior to cimetidine 50 mg/kg, a commonly used anti-ulcer drug. PEFH showed excellent anti-ulcer effects against pylorus ligation induced gastric ulcers, compared to the control group, however, 50 mg/kg ethylacetate fraction of persimmon leaves (PEFL) and PEFH did not affect ulcers induced by water immersion stress, and that is inferior to cimetidine 50 mg/kg. In conclusion, the results suggest that the ethylacetate fraction of persimmon leaves can be used both in prevention and treatment of experimentally induced gastric mucosal damage and ulcers.
This study investigated DNA damage protection and anti-inflammatory activity of different solvent fractions from Aruncus dioicus var. kamtschaticus (A. dioicus) aerial parts water extract. As for DNA damage protection, distilled water ($H_2O$) fraction displayed the most powerful protection for DNA damage at a concentration of 1 mg/ml. As for anti-inflammatory activity, dichloromethane ($CH_2Cl_2$) fraction exhibited the highest NO inhibition activity, ranging from 61% to 19% ($10-40{\mu}g/ml$). Furthermore, the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines mRNA expressions and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) were employed to verify the anti-inflammatory activity of the $CH_2Cl_2$ fraction on further researches. It could be concluded that A. dioicus had a significantly effect of DNA damage protection and anti-inflammatory activity which also as an essential edible vegetable and medicinal species.

Antioxidant activities of the extract of red seaweed, Polysiphonia morrowii, were evaluated using several in vitro assay systems. Activity-guided fractionation revealed that the 90% MeOH fraction of the P. morrowii extract exhibited the highest antioxidant activity, and that this fraction had a high total phenolic content ($135.7{\pm}5.0\;mg$ gallic acid/g extract). Therefore, the antioxidant activities of the 90% MeOH fraction against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl radical, reducing power, ferrous chelating, and hydrogen peroxide were investigated. The results revealed that the antioxidant activities of the 90% MeOH fraction were similar and/or superior to that of commercial antioxidants such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). In addition, the ability of the 90% MeOH fraction to inhibit oxidative damage to DNA was assessed by measuring the conversion of the supercoiled pBR322 plasmid DNA to the open circular form. The 90% MeOH fraction was found to significantly protect this hydroxyl radical-induced DNA damage in a dose-dependent manner. Taken together, these findings suggest that the 90% MeOH fraction of P. morrowii extract and/or its constituents has the potential for use as a new bioresource of antioxidants.
Ethanolic extract (50% v/v) and alkaloid fraction of Tylophora indica leaves were examined for lysosomal enzyme inhibitory activity in adjuvant-induced arthritic rats. The alkaloid fraction showed statistically significant inhibition of arthritic lesions (p < 0.05) from day 18, (p < 0.025) from day 20 and (p < 0.001) from day 21 onwards in the adjuvant-induced arthritis, which was comparable to the response of standard drug Indomethacin. The ethanolic extract was less significant than the alkaloidal fraction in inhibition of arthritis. Alkaloid fraction showed significant (p < 0.001) inhibitory effect on the lysosomal enzyme activities in adjuvantinduced arthritic rats. It also significantly prevented decrease in collagen levels and synovial damage observed during arthritis and also inhibited increase in urinary excretion levels of collagen degradation products like hydroxyproline, hexosamine, hexuronic acid, etc. Both ethanolic extract as well as the alkaloid fraction, however, did not show any significant activity in normal nonarthritic rats. The ethanolic extract and the alkaloid fraction may thus be able to inhibit the progress of inflammation and inhibit the destructive activity of lysosomal enzymes on structural macromolecules like collagen etc. in the synovial capsule in joints during arthritic states. They may thus prevent synovial damage observed during arthritis.

Citri Reticulatae Viride Pericarpium extract(CRVP) have been used in oriental medicine for many centuries as a therapeutic agent for smoothing the liver and regulating the circulation of qi, and promoting digestion and removing stagnated food. The effects of CRVP on the inhibition of brain damage in cerebral ischemia is not known. Therefore, this Study was designed to investigate the cerebral protective effects of CRVP on the transient cerebral ischemia using modern techniques, and further to provide the possibility of scientification of oriental medicine. The size of cerebral infarct size was measured by morphometry, and brain edema was measured by morphometry and brain water content determination. The results were a$ follows ; 1. Water fraction of CRVP was reduced infect area of rats brain slices which were subjected to a transient cerebral ischemia in a dose-dependent manner. 2. Methylene chloride fraction and hexane fraction of CRVP was significantly reduced infarct area of rats brain slices which were subjected to a transient cerebral ischemia in a dose-dependent manner. 3. Methylene chloride fraction and hexane fraction of CRVP was significantly reduced infarct volume of rats brain which was subjected to a transient cerebral ischemia in a dose-dependent manner. 4. Methylene Chloride fraction and hexane fraction of CRVP was significantly decreased brain edema induced by a transient cerebral ischemia in a dose-dependent manner. 5. Methylene chloride fraction and hexane fraction of CRVP was significantly decreased brain water content of rats which were subjected to a transient cerebral ischemia. It is suggested that CRVP has an anti-ischemic effect through the inhibition of brain damage in a transient cerebral ischemia, and that in future further development of main effective constituent in CRVP can provide a novel therapeutic strategy for cerebral ischemia.
We obtained Surviving Fraction (SF) after irradiation carbon beam to compare the applicability of the Linear-Quadratic model, Incomplete Repair model, Marchese model. Mathematica software(ver 9.0) used to calcurate parameters and compared result. LQ model could not explain the entire response of fractionated carbon beam irradiation. It becomes necessary to construct models that extend the LQ model of conventional radiotherapy for the carbon beam therapy. By combining both Potentially Lethal Damage Repair (PLDR) and Sublethal Damage Repair (SLDR) a new LQ model can develop that aptly modeled the cellular response to fractionated irradiation.

The railroad bogie's components experience repeated loading during service. Especially, oil damper bush has been fatigue fractured on the plane between rubber and steel stem during service, and which results in inferior of performance of the bogie. In this study, in order to offer a proper maintenance method of the bush, bubber bush used for the oil damper was fatigue tested and its damage fraction during service was estimated. Also, FEM analysis on the bush was conducted. When 1400, 1200, and 1000kgf of repeated loads were applied to the oil damper bush, final damage fraction exhibited 63.7%, 50% and 40%. From the results of FEM analysis, deformation energy density was found to be $0.5452kgf/mm^{2}$ at an applied load of 1400kgf and the location with maximum value coincided with the fractured location of the bush. Finally, it will be desirable to adopt the normalized damage fraction rather than absolute damage fraction in estimating remaining service lifetime of the bush.

In the present study, a unified viscoplastic-damage model has been applied in order to describe the mechanical characteristics of fresh water ice such as nonlinear material behavior and volume fraction. The strain softening phenomenon of fresh water ice under quasi-static compressive loading has been evaluated based on unified viscoplastic model. The material degradation such as growth of slip/fraction has quite close relation with material inside damage. The volume fraction phenomenon of fresh water ice has been identified based on volume fraction (nucleation and growth of damage) model. The viscoplastic-damage model has been transformed to the fully implicit formulation and the discretized formulation has been implemented to ABAQUS user defined subroutine (User MATerial: UMAT) for the benefit of application of commercial finite element program. The proposed computational analysis method has been compared to uni-axial compression test of fresh water ice in order to validate the compatibilities, clarities and usefulness.
Ginseng proteins were isolated and partially purified to obtain two fractions, namely GI and GII. Radioprotective effects of these fractions were examined on $\gamma$-ray irradiated ICR mice by observing 30-day survival rates after irradiation. Also investigated were the effects of GI fraction on the recovery of radiation damage. As the results, the GI fraction showed strong protection against radiation indicated by the increment of 30-day survival rates, while the GII fraction did not. The GI fraction enhanced the recovery of body and splenic weights and increased the amount of DNA in liver significantly. It also helped to recover the damage done on erythrocytes by increasing the number to normal in short period, however, it had no effect on the recovery of leukocyte counts.
Portulaca oleracea L. is known to have many biological benefits such as anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anti-tumor. The objective of this study is to explore the neuroprotective effect of P. oleracea L. against glutamate-induced oxidative stress in mouse hippocampal HT22 cells. P. oleracea L. 70% ethanol extract and solvent fractions have the potent neroprotective effects on glutamate-induced nerotoxicity by induced the expression of heme oxygenase (HO)-1 in HT22 cells. Especially, ethyl acetate fraction showed higher protective effect. In HT22 cell, P. oleracea L. treatment with ERK inhibitor (PD98059) and c-JUN N-terminal kinase (JNK) inhibitor (SP600125) reduced P. oleracea L. ethyl acetate fraction induced HO-1 expression and P. oleracea L. ethyl acetate fraction also increased ERK and JNK phosphorylation. Furthermore, we found that treatment of P. oleracea L. caused the nuclear accumulation of Nrf2. In conclusion, the ethyl acetate fraction of 70% ethanol extract of P. oleracea L. significantly protect glutamate-induced oxidative damage by induction of HO-1 via Nrf2, ERK and JNK pathway in mouse hippocampal HT22. Taken together these finding suggest that P. oleracea L. ethyl acetate fraction is good source for taking active compounds and may be a potential therapeutic agent for brain disorder that induced by oxidative stress and neuronal damage.
