  • The mismatch of ply orientations in composite laminates can cause high interlaminar stress concentrations near the free edges. Evaluation of these interlaminar stresses and their role in the progressive damage analysis of laminates is desirable. Recently, the authors developed a new method to relate the physically based micromechanics approach with the meso-scale CDM considering matrix cracking and induced delamination. In this paper, the developed method is applied for the analysis of edge effects in various angle-ply laminates such as $[10/-10]_{2s}$, $[30/-30]_{2s}$ and $[45/-45]_{2s}$ and comparing the results with available traditional CDM and experimental results. It is shown that the obtained stress-strain behaviors of laminates are in good agreement with the available experimental results and even in better agreement than the traditional CDM results. Variations of the stresses and stiffness components through the laminate thickness and near the free edges are also computed and compared with the available CDM results.

  • Localized rainfall due to abnormal climate has caused extensive damages killing several tens to hundreds of people for yearly basis. The typhoon 'Lusa' of year 2002 has resulted 5,400 billion won of property damage and the damages for roads were approximated to be 2,860 billion won at 12,377 locations holding 53% damage of total. The recent typhoon, 'Aewinia' of yeat 2006 caused the 1,400 billion-won property damage including sweeping and flooding of 127 roads and 65 rivers, respectively. There are needs to minimize the damages for important structures for repeated heavy rainfalls every year and, especially, because debris flow might be a main cause of road damage, the design criteria and guideline for roads are required to be improved. Therefore, this paper presented design method of debris-flow control structure for road protection.

  • Modern society is transforming into an extreme climate environment. This is fatal to humans and ecosystems and is expected to cause large-scale damage. As this spokesman, natural disasters are increasing as this global average temperature rises. Social and economic damage by this tendency is also increasing. In addition, the frequency and scale of social disasters are increasing. Damage to the living area due to the damage of the infrastructure due to the increased reliance on infrastructure has been increasingly enlarged. In this research, various disasters such as natural disasters and social disasters analyze the impact on urban safety. A local autonomous entity K Priority Management Establish a kind of disaster, prepare crisis management manual, and use it as a basic material of education / training.

  • Preserving intact genetic material and delivering it to the next generation are the most significant tasks of living organisms. The integrity of DNA sequences is under constant threat from endogenous and exogenous factors. The accumulation of damaged or incompletely-repaired DNA can cause serious problems in cells, including cell death or cancer development. Various DNA damage detection systems and repair mechanisms have evolved at the cellular level. Although the mechanisms of these responses have been extensively studied, the global RNA expression profiles associated with genomic instability are not well-known. To detect global gene expression changes under different DNA damage and hypoxic conditions, we performed RNA-seq after treating human cervical cancer cells with ionizing radiation (IR), hydroxyurea, mitomycin C (MMC), or 1% O2 (hypoxia). Results showed that the expression of 184-1037 genes was altered by each stimulus. We found that the expression of 51 genes changed under IR, MMC, and hypoxia. These findings revealed damage-specific genes that varied differently according to each stimulus and common genes that are universally altered in genetic instability.

  • The detection and the regulation of man-made synthetic chemicals and the establishment of toxicity that may pose a genetic hazard in our environment are subjects of great concern because of its close correlation between environmental contamination and human health. Since the tens of thousands of man-made chemicals that have been introduced into the environment in the last few decades must also be tested for their damaging effect on DNA, the agents that cause this damage must be identified.

  • This paper focuses on the effects of wind pressure on transmission towers. It recommends the need for an application method to strengthen some existing towers, especially those in areas regularly affected by typhoons, and to be applied to new constructions. Some considerations taken into account were modifying existing towers exposed, which can cause significant damage to the power system and the effects of damage on third parties.

  • For international projects in general and the projects in the Gulf area in Particular, the most common cause of construction disputes and claims is construction delay. This paper will present different surveys to identify the causes of delay, the parties responsible, and how delay can be avoided. This paper will outline how these factors impact damage assessment and entitlement. Furthermore, a case study will be presented to show how the responsibility and damages due to delay are assessed and how entitlements are calculated.

  • To measure motor evoked potentials (MEP) during emergency surgery is often difficult in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) from a ruptured cerebral aneurysm, The cause of these difficulties may be considered as damage to the motor pathway by hemorrhage. To identify the cause of difficulties in measuring MEP, we defined the association between motor evoked potentials during surgery and the severity of the hemorrhage in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage.
