A State-age Dependent Policy for a Shock Process - Structural Relationships of Optimal Policy -

  • Consider a failure model for a stochastic system. A shock is any perturbation to the system which causes a random amount of damage to the system. Any of the shocks can cause the system to fail at shock times. The amount of damage at each shock is a function of the sum of the magnitudes of damage caused from all previous shocks. The times between shocks form a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables. The system must be replaced upon failure at some cost but it also can be replaced before failure at a lower cost. The long term expected cost per unit time criterion is used. Structural relationships of the optimal replacement policy under the appropriate regularity conditions will be developed. And these relationships will provide theoretical background for the algorithm development.

평면 비정형 건물의 설계편심과 지진 손상도의 상관관계에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Relationship between Earthquake Damage and the Design Eccentricity of Building with Planar Irregularity)

  • In the Korean Building Code (KBC), the Design Eccentricity involves the torsional amplification factor (TAF), and the inherent and accidental eccentricities. When a structure of less than 6-stories and assigned to seismic design category C or D is designed using equivalent static analysis method, both KBC-2006 and KBC-2009 use the TAF but apply different calculation methods for the of design eccentricity. The design eccentricity in KBC-2006 is calculated by multiplying the sum of inherent eccentricity and accidental eccentricity at each level by a TAF but that in KBC-2009 is calculated by multiplying only the accidental eccentricity by a TAF. In this paper, the damage indices of a building with planar structural irregularity designed by different design eccentricities are compared and the relationship between the earthquake damage and design eccentricity of the building is evaluated. On the basis of this study, the increment of design eccentricity results in the decrement of final eccentricity and global damage index of structure. It is observed that design eccentricity in KBC-2006 reduces the vulnerability of torsional irregular building compared to design eccentricity in KBC-2009.

XPS STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF LOW-ENERGY ELECTRON IRRADIATION ON DNA DAMAGE BY Fe3+ ION

  • We have employed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technique to examine the combined effects of low-energy electron (LEE) irradiation and $Fe^{3+}$ ion on DNA damage. pBR322 plasmid DNA extracted from E. coli ER2420 was used for preparing DNA-$Fe^{3+}$ sample. The C1s XPS spectra were scanned for LEE-irradiated and LEE-unirradiated samples and then curve-fitted. For the samples with LEE irradiation only or with Fe ion only, no significant changes from pure DNA samples were observed - a single effect of either $Fe^{3+}$ ion or LEE irradiation did not cause a significant damage. However, when these two components were combined, the DNA damage was increased quite significantly, compared to the sum of DNA damages caused by $Fe^{3+}$ ion and by LEE irradiation independently. This observation is consistent with our previous results [Radiat. Res. 177, 775 (2012)] which was done using gel-electrophoresis technique. Partial interpretation of the observed spectrum peaks was also attempted.

  • Koo-ni Firing Range in Maehyang-ri consisted of a firing range around 'Nong-sum' and a land-based firing range in the nearby coastal area. From 1951, when the US Air Force began field firing, residents of Maehyang-ri suffered damage to health, environment, life and property due to 54 years of field firing and noise. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the environmental damage, property loss, and health impairment by reviewing literature and related lawsuits. Environmental damage, the destruction of coastal fisheries and wetlands, would be a result of heavy metal contamination of soil. Fishing restrictions and the confiscation of farmlands caused financial hardship. Errant bombings led to the loss of life and property, including buildings and livestock. As a result, residents repeatedly sued the Republic of Korea for damages. The court decided partially in favor of the plaintiffs. Finally, Koo-ni firing range was closed down in 2005. Through the literature review, it is presumed that the noise caused hearing problems, hypertension, and mental illness. Since earlier studies were confined to a small fragment of the damage, additional studies focused on chronic health hazards are needed.

빙 및 일반해역 운항을 고려한 아라온호 선수프레임의 피로수명 계산 (Calculation of Fatigue Life of Bow Frame of ARAON Considering Navigating in Ice and Open Waters)

  • Ice-going ships such as icebreakers, icebreaking tankers, and icebreaking LNG carriers are subjected to wave loads in open water and ice loads in ice-covered water. In terms of the ship's structural design, the local ice load is important. The fatigue failure due to repeated ice loads is also important. ISO 19906 specifies the assessment of the fatigue limit for a polar offshore structures. In addition, Lloyd's Register refers to fatigue damage based on ShipRight FDA ICE. In ShipRight FDA ICE, the fatigue damage indices due to wave and ice loads are simply presented as 0.5 for each load. It also states that the sum of the two fatigue damage indices should not exceed one. This study calculated and analyzed the fatigue damage index and fatigue life considering ARAON's voyage schedules and the assumed Antarctic voyage based on data measured during the Arctic voyage of ARAON in 2010.

  • The importance of the life cycle cost analysis for construction projects of bridge has been recognized over the last decades. Accordingly, theoretical models, guidelines, and supporting softwares have been developed for the life cycle cost analysis of bridges. However, it is difficult to predict life cycle cost considering uncertainties precisely. This paper presents methodology for optimal design of substructure for a steel box bridge. Total life cycle cost for the service life is calculated as sum of initial cost, damage cost considering uncertainty, maintenance cost, repair and rehabilitation cost. The optimization method is applied to design of a bridge substructure with minimal cost, in which the objective function is set to life cycle cost and constraints are formulated on the basis of Korean Bridge Design Specification. Initial cost is calculated based on standard costs of the Korea Construction Price Index and damage cost on the damage probabilities to consider the uncertainty of load and resistance. An advanced first-order second moment method is used as a practical tool for reliability analysis using damage probability. Maintenance cost and cycle is determined by a stochastic method and user cost includes traffic operation costs and time delay costs.

  • The purpose of this study makes a retrofit and rehabilitation practice trough the analysis and the improvement for the underlying problem of current retrofit and rehabilitation methods. Therefore, the deterioration process, the damage cause, the condition classification, the fatigue mechanism and the applied quantity of strengthening methods for slab bridge decks were analysed. Artificial neural networks are efficient computing techniqures that are widely used to solve complex problems in many fields. In this study, a back-propagation neural network model for estimating a management on existing slab bridge decks from damage cause, damage type, and integrity assessment at the initial stsge is need. The training and testing of the network were based on a database of 36. Four different network models werw used to study the ability of the neural network to predict the desirable output of increasing degree of accuracy. The neural networks is trained by modifying the weights of the neurons in response to the errors between the actual output values and the target output value. Training was done iteratively until the average sum squared errors over all the training patterms were minimized. This generally occurred after about 5,000 cycles of training.

HEC-FDA 모형을 이용한 홍수피해 저감계획 (Flood Damage Reduction Plan Using HEC-FDA Model)

  • 본 연구에서는 홍수량과 홍수위 산정 및 치수경제성 분석을 함에 있어 본질적으로 내재되어 있는 불확실성에 대한 고려를 분석에 포함하여 피해발생확률을 추정하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 섬강유역을 대상유역으로 선정하였고 각 홍수량 산정지점에서의 빈도별로 임계지속시간 개념을 사용하여 빈도별 확률강우량을 산정하였다. 유역내 8개구간을 대상으로 연 피해 기대치, 연 초과확률, 장기간 위험도, 조건부 비초과확률 등을 계산하기 위해 HEC-FDA를 이용하여 유량-빈도, 수위-유량, 침수심-피해액 함수를 구축 하였으며 불확실성이 고려된 함수들로부터 500,000번 이상의 모의발생을 통하여 표본 추출한 자료를 바탕으로 연 피해 기대치를 구하였다. 여러 가지 설계빈도의 제방을 계획하여 이에 대한 평가를 수행하여 적정 빈도나 투자우선순위에 대한 결과를 산정하였다. 분석결과 불확실성을 고려할 경우 B/C값이 12%정도 증가됨을 알 수 있었으며, 적정 빈도나 투자우선순위 등도 바뀔 가능성이 있었다. 실제 홍수피해 저감계획시 경제적인 분석이외에 정치적, 사회적인 분석을 함께 수행한다면 보다 합리적인 결정에 도움을 줄 수 있을것으로 판단된다.

타이어에서 발생하는 초음파펄스신호의 시간밀도함수에 의한 손상 분별 (Damage Classification by Time Density Function of Ultrasonic Pulse Signal occurred at Tire)

  • 주행 중인 차량의 타이어와 노면 사이에서 발생하는 랜덤성 초음파신호의 주기성을 검출하여 타이어의 손상을 분별하는 방법에 대하여 연구하였다. 잡음으로부터 타이어손상에 의한 유효한 펄스를 검출하기 위해 적응 임계치를 설정하는 방법을 제안하였고, 이를 위한 전처리로서 신호의 랜덤성을 감소시키는 저역통과필터를 사용하였다. 자동차의 속도에 따라 검출된 펄스의 시간간격을 밀도함수화하고 피크점의 시간을 측정하여 타이어 손상물질을 검출하는 방법을 제안하였다. 손상물질이 한 개이고, 주행속도가 50km/h, 80km/h, 100km/h 일 때, 시간밀도함수의 제 1 피크시간 측정결과는 각각 169.8ms, 97.9ms, 81.8ms로 주행속도에 따라 계산한 타이어 회전주기의 오차범위내로 측정되었으며, 한개 이상의 손상물질의 경우에는 각 피크시간의 합이 타이어 회전주기의 오차범위내로 측정되는 결과를 얻을 수 있었다.

  • Performed fatigue strength analysis for Hub to get the targeted service life of 20 years. ANSYS is used to analysis. The major structure of bearing which connect the hub and blades is modeled using the element of LINK10. To represent the stiffness of LINK10 element, initial strain and diameter of LINK10 element is applied. Prior to calculating the fatigue damages, the influence matrix is extracted from the unit loads. The target service life of 20 years is achieved from the Analysis results.
