Damage assessment based on static and dynamic responses applied to foundation beams

  • Foundations are a vital part of structures. Over time, the foundations can deteriorate due to unforeseen overloads and/or settlements, resulting in the appearance of cracks in the concrete. These cracks produce changes in the static and dynamic behavior of the affected foundation, which alter its load carrying capacity. In this work, non-destructive techniques of relative simplicity of application are presented for the detection, location, and quantification of damage, using numerical models, solved with the finite element method and Power Series. For this, two types of parameters are used: static (displacement and elastic curvature) and dynamics (natural frequencies). In the static analysis, the damage detection is done by means of a finite elements model representing a beam supported on an elastic foundation with a discrete crack that varies in length and location. With regard to dynamic analysis, the governing equations of the model are presented and a method based on Power Series is used to obtain the solution for a data set, which could be the Winkler coefficient, the location of the crack or the frequency. In order to validate the proposed methodologies, these techniques are applied to data obtained from laboratory tests.

  • With the increasing flood damage by frequently localized heavy rains, flood prediction research are being conducted to prevent flooding damage in advance. In this paper, we present a machine-learning scheme for developing a flooding depth and location prediction model using real-time rainfall data. This scheme proposes a dataset configuration method using the data as input, which can robustly configure various rainfall distribution patterns and train the model with less memory. These data are composed of two: valid total data and valid local. The one data that has a significant effect on flooding predicted the flooding location well but tended to have different values for predicting specific rainfall patterns. The other data that means the flood area partially affects flooding refers to valid local data. The valid local data was well learned for the fixed point method, but the flooding location was not accurately indicated for the arbitrary point method. Through this study, it is expected that a lot of damage can be prevented by predicting the depth and location of flooding in a real-time manner.

Structural damage detection using a damage probability index based on frequency response function and strain energy concept

  • In this study, an efficient damage index is proposed to identify multiple damage cases in structural systems using the concepts of frequency response function (FRF) matrix and strain energy of a structure. The index is defined based on the change of strain energy of an element due to damage. For obtaining the strain energy stored in elements, the columnar coefficients of the FRF matrix is used. The new indicator is named here as frequency response function strain energy based index (FRFSEBI). In order to assess the performance of the proposed index for structural damage detection, some benchmark structures having a number of damage scenarios are considered. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed index even with considering noise can accurately identify the actual location and approximate severity of the damage. In order to demonstrate the high efficiency of the proposed damage index, its performance is also compared with that of the flexibility strain energy based index (FSEBI) provided in the literature.

  • The damage localization of the structural system using the natural frequency measurement only is proposed. The existing methods use the changes of mode shape, strain mode shape or curvature mode shape before and after the damage occurrence as these shapes carry the geometric information of the structure.   • This paper provides the experimental verification of a non-destructive time domain approach to examine structural damage. Time histories of the vibration response of structure were used to identify the presence of damage. Damage in a structure cause changes in the physical coefficients of mass density, elastic modulus and damping coefficient. This paper examines the use of beam like structures with PVDF sensor and PZT actuator to perform identification of those physical parameters, and hence to detect the damage. Experimental results are presented from tests on cantilevered composite beams damaged at different location and with damage of different dimensions. It is demonstrated that the method can sense the presence of damage, and characterize the damage to a satisfactory precision.

  • In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed to estimate the damage location in the composite panel by extracting the elastic wave signal reflected from the damaged area. The guided elastic wave is generated by a piezoelectric actuator and sensed by a piezoelectric sensor. The proposed algorithm adopts a diagnostic approach. It compares the non-damaged signal with the damaged signal, and extract damage information along with sensor network and lamb wave group velocity estimated by signal correlation. However, it is difficult to clearly distinguish the damage location due to the nonlinear properties of lamb wave and complex information composed of various signals. To overcome this difficulty, the cumulative summation feature vector algorithm(CSFV) and a visualization technique are newly proposed in this paper. CSFV algorithm finds the center position of the damage by converting the signals reflected from the damage to the area of distance at which signals reach, and visualization technique is applied that expresses feature vectors by multiplying damage indexes. Experiments are performed for a composite panel and comparative study with the existing algorithms is carried out. From the results, it is confirmed that the damage location can be detected by the proposed algorithm with more reliable accuracy.

  • A method for damage detection in a plate structure is presented based on strain waves that are generated by impact or damage in the structure. Strain responses from continuous sensors, which are long ribbon-like sensors made from piezoceramic fibers or other materials, were used with a neural network technique to estimate the damage location. The continuous sensor uses only a small number of channels of data acquisition and can cover large areas of the structure. A grid type structural neural system composed of the continuous sensors was developed for effective damage localization in a plate structure. The ratios of maximum strains and arrival times of the maximum strains obtained from the continuous sensors were used as input data to a neural network. Simulated damage localizations on a plate were carried out and the identified damage locations agreed reasonably well with the exact damage locations.

A Study on the Damage Range According to Leakage Scenarios in Natural Gas Pipeline of LNG Fueled Ship (LNG 추진선의 천연가스 배관에서 누출 시나리오에 따른 피해범위에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, damages caused by flash fire, overpressure, and thermal radiation based on the sizes of leak holes were evaluated using the areal location of hazardous atmospheres when natural gas leaked owing to the damage of pipeline in a LNG fueled ship. In addition, environmental variables (wind speed, atmospheric temperature, and atmospheric stability) and process variables (pipe pressure and pipe length) were classified to analyze the damage impact ranges caused by various scenarios. From the results, the damage range caused by the environmental variables was the largest, followed by overpressure and thermal radiation. Additionally, for the process variables, regardless of the pressure, length, or size of the leak holes, the damage range attributed to flash fire was the most significant, and the damage range was high in the order of overpressure and thermal radiation, similar to the environmental variables. The larger the size of the leak holes, the higher the values of the environmental and process variables, and the higher the damage range caused by jet fire compared to the environmental variables.

  • This paper is the study on the verification of structural health monitoring (SHM) algorithm based on the ultrasonic guided wave. An active inspection system using Lamb wave (LW) for SHM was considered. The basic study about the application of this algorithm was performed for detecting the circular notch defect in steel plate. LW testing technique, pitch-catch method, was used for interpretation of circular notch defect with depth of 50% of plate thickness and 7 mm width. Damage characterization takes place by comparing $S_0$ mode sensor signals collected before and after the damage event. By subtracting the signals of both conditions from each other, a scatter signal is produced which can be used for damage localization. The continuous Gabor wavelet transform is used to attain the time between the arrivals of the scatter and sensor signals. A new practical damage monitoring algorithm, based on damage monitoring polygon and pitch-catch method, has been proposed and verified with good accuracy. The possible damage location can be estimated by the average on calculated location points and the damage extent by the standard deviation.

Evaluation of Surface Damage Possibility on Strip Roads (작업로 노면의 피해가능성 평가에 관한 연구)

  • This study is carried out to minimize the damage to the forest road when locating strip roads in the future for stability of timberland after afforestation by assessing the factors that affect the damage on the forest road surface and making appropriate constructing standards. Major factors that influence damage to the strip road surface were location, longitudinal gradients, soil types, cross-section shape in order of influence on damage. it is considered that structural road factors like longitudinal gradients, road width, location factors such as construction location, slope gradients and road material like soil types were greatly related to occurrence of road surface damage. Damage occurrences in the forest road were severe at the valley, longitudinal gradients of over 24%, weathered granite soil, concave of road position, road width of over 3.0 m. stability was high at longitudinal gradients of 4~24%, road width of under 3.0 m, ridge of road position, straight slope, soil materials. The evaluation table of damage possibility on forest road was manufactured by discriminant analysis using Quantification theory(II). The results showed that the discriminant ratios was 79.4% and this table was available for forest manager.
