This paper presents an efficient method for updating the structural finite element model. Model updating is performed through minimizing the difference between the recorded acceleration of a real damaged structure and a hypothetical damaged one. This is performed by updating physical parameters (module of elasticity in this study) in each step using iterative process of modified nonlinear conjugate gradient (M-NCG) and modified Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno algorithm (M-BFGS) separately. These algorithms are based on sensitivity analysis and provide a solution for nonlinear damage detection problem. Three illustrative test examples are considered to assess the performance of the proposed method. Finally, it is demonstrated that the proposed method is satisfactory for detecting the location and ratio of structural damage in presence of noise.
It is commonly believed that a gigantic earthquake (Tokai Earthquake) could occur in Shizuoka Prefecture in the near future. The Shizuoka Prefecture Government made the prediction report of Tokai Earthquake disaster damage. But this report does not pay attention to the ground conditions. The authors make a prediction map using GIS of Tokai Earthquake disaster damage in Asada-cho and Hirosawa Ni-chome in the central Hamamatsu City and revealed the location of dangerous houses and dangerous points in road networks in each town. These information could be useful when people try to find escape routes in an earthquake.

To develop a promising hybrid structural health monitoring (SHM) system, a combined use of structural vibration and electro-mechanical (EM) impedance is proposed. The hybrid SHM system is designed to use vibration characteristics as global index and EM impedance as local index. The proposed health monitoring scheme is implemented into prestressed concrete (PSC) girder bridges for which a series of damage scenarios are designed to simulate various prestress-loss situations at which the target bridges car experience during their service life. The measured experimental results, modal parameters and electro-magnetic impedance signatures, are carefully analyzed to recognize the occurrence of damage and furthermore to indicate its location.
The result of damage detection from on-site measurements is commonly polluted by unavoidable measurement noises. It is widely recognized that this side influence could be reduced to some extent if the sensor placement was properly designed. Although many methods have been proposed to find the optimal number and location of mono-type sensors, the optimal layout of multi-type sensors need further investigation, because a network of heterogeneous sensors is commonly used in engineering. In this paper, a new criterion of the optimal placement for different types of sensors is proposed. A corresponding heuristic is developed to search for good results. In addition, Monte Carlo simulation is suggested to design a robust damage detection system which contains certain redundancies. The validity of these methods is illustrated by two bridge examples.

This paper is concerned with the damage detection of existing 2 and 3-dimensional truss structures based on free vibration equation and extended Kalman filter. The local damage is characterized in terms of the stiffness degradation of damaged members. As the observed data, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of damaged truss structure model are adopted. Both location and stiffness of damaged parts of members in truss structures can be estimated by the proposed inverse solution procedure. The applicability and effectiveness of proposed inverse solution procedure are demonstrated through the numerical examples.

This paper describes a new, effective method developed at the National Research Council Canada for rolling element bearing incipient failure detection. This method can detect not only outer race damage, previously published, but also inner race damage with a 100% detection rate based on a sample size of 32. The prediction of the exact angular location of the damage spot along the raceway is illustrated and experimental confirmation is presented. For the first time, a statically measurable parameter for inner and outer race damage is introduced as a means of verifying other techniques which do not offer absolute proof, but resort only to "overwhelming evidence". A brief comparison with other methods such as Shock Pulse Method, Kurtosis Analysis and High Frequency Resonance Technique is presented. A computerized automatic monitoring system utilizing the new method is described and experimental results are presented.presented.
This study introduces a method of estimating the 3D coordinates of structural damage from the detection results of visual inspection provided in 2D image coordinates using sensing data of UAV and 3D shape information of BIM. This estimation process takes place in a virtual space and utilizes the BIM model, so it is possible to immediately identify which member of the structure the estimated location corresponds to. Difference from conventional structural damage localization methods that require 3D scanning or additional sensor attachment, it is a method that can be applied locally and rapidly. Measurement accuracy was calculated through the distance difference between the measured position measured by TLS (Terrestrial Laser Scanner) and the estimated position calculated by the method proposed in this study, which can determine the applicability of this study and the direction of future research.

This paper deals with the method and algorithm used to find fault locations in gas insulated transmission line. The method uses UHF sensors and digital oscilloscope to detect discharge signals emitted to the outside through insulating spacer in the event of breakdown inside GIL. UHF sensors are the external type and installed at outside of insulating spacers of GIL. And we used wavelet signal processing to analyze the discharge signals and confirm the exact fault location findings in the GIL test line. This method can overcome demerit of TDR(Time Domain Reflectometer) method having been applied to detect fault location for conventional underground transmission lines, and Ground Fault Sensors used in conventional GIS systems. TDR method requires high level of specialty and experience in analyzing the measured signals. Ground fault sensors are installed inside GIL and can be destroyed by high transient voltage. This paper's method can simplify the fault location process and minimize the damage of sensors. In addition, this method can estimate the fault location only by the time difference when discharge signals are arrived to detecting sensors at the ends of GIL sections without reasons of breakdown. To test the performance of our method, we installed sensors at the ends of test line of GIL(84m) and sensed discharge signals occurred in GIL, energized with AC voltage generator up to 700kV.

In this paper, a hybrid damage monitoring scheme for prestressed concrete (PSC) girder bridges by using sequential acceleration and impedance signatures is newly proposed. Damage types of interest include prestress-loss in tendon and flexural stiffness-loss in a concrete girder. The hybrid scheme mainly consists of three sequential phases: damage alarming, damage classification, and damage estimation. In the first phase, the global occurrence of damage is alarmed by monitoring changes in acceleration features. In the second phase, the type of damage is classified into either prestress-loss or flexural stiffness-loss by recognizing patterns of impedance features. In the third phase, the location and the extent of damage are estimated by using two different ways: a mode shape-based damage detection to detect flexural stiffness-loss and a natural frequency-based prestress prediction to identify prestress-loss. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is evaluated on a laboratory-scaled PSC girder model for which hybrid vibration-impedance signatures were measured for several damage scenarios of prestress-loss and flexural stiffness-loss.

The magnitude and frequency of extreme floods are increasing owing to the effects of climate change. Therefore, multipurpose flood management techniques incorporating nature-based solutions have been introduced to mitigate the limitations of flood management and river design methods relying on existing observation data. Nature-based solutions to prepare for such extreme flooding events include ways to retreat the embankment, expand the floodplain, and reduce flood damage. To apply these technologies, adopting appropriate location selection methods based on various evaluation factors, such as flood damage reduction effects, sustainable ecological environments, river connectivity, and physical channel structure enhancements, should be prioritized. Therefore, in this study, the optimal location for implementing the multipurpose floodplain construction project was determined by selecting the location of the floodplain expansion with objectivity in the river waterfront area upstream of Daecheong Dam to downstream of Yongdam Dam. Through the final location determination, the Dongdaeje and Jeogokje sections were included in the optimal location considering both flood damage reduction and water environment improvement.
