Modal strength reduction factors for seismic design of plane steel frames

  • A new method for the seismic design of plane steel moment resisting frames is developed. This method determines the design base shear of a plane steel frame through modal synthesis and spectrum analysis utilizing different values of the strength reduction (behavior) factor for the modes considered instead of a single common value of that factor for all these modes as it is the case with current seismic codes. The values of these modal strength reduction factors are derived with the aid of a) design equations that provide equivalent linear modal damping ratios for steel moment resisting frames as functions of period, allowable interstorey drift and damage levels and b) the damping reduction factor that modifies elastic acceleration spectra for high levels of damping. Thus, a new performance-based design method is established. The direct dependence of the modal strength reduction factor on desired interstorey drift and damage levels permits the control of deformations without their determination and secures that deformations will not exceed these levels. By means of certain seismic design examples presented herein, it is demonstrated that the use of different values for the strength reduction factor per mode instead of a single common value for all modes, leads to more accurate results in a more rational way than the code-based ones.

  • This paper develops practical models and methods for the assessment of safety and rating of damaged and/or deteriorated bridges by incorporating a system identification technique for the explicit inclusion of the degree of deterioration or damage and of the actual bridge response. And, based on the proposed model, reliability-based rating methods are proposed as LRFR(Load and Resistance Factor Rating) and system reliability-index rating criteria. The proposed limit state model explicitly accounts for the degree of deterioration or damage in terms of the damage and response factors. The damage factor in the paper is proposed as the ratio of the current stiffness to the intact stiffness. Based on the observation and the results of applications to existing bridges, it may be concluded that the proposed rating models, which explicitly account for the uncertainties and the effects of degree of deterioration or damage based on the system identification technique, provide more realistic and consistent safety-assessment and capacity-rating.

  • After the forest fire, as access is not easy, forest damage degree are determined with Landsat TM image rather than visual inspection. Therefore in this study, damaged areas are extracted with factor analysis and cluster analysis. Second factor analysis was performed for areas suspicious as forest fire damage areas to evaluate accuracy after separating into strong, medium and light forest fire areas.

위성영상 자료에서 요인분석에 의한 산불 피해 지역 추출 (The Abstraction of Forest Fire Damage Area using Factor Analysis from the Satellite Image Data)

  • 산불의 피해를 조사함에 있어서 현재 상당수의 조사가 육안 관측에 의존하고 있으나, 광범위한 면적에 걸쳐 피해가 확대되고, 발생 직후 접근이 용이하지 않다는 점에서 위성영상 등을 이용한 산불 피해 조사가 이용되고 있다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 산불 직후의 위성영상을 이용하여 통계적 해석에 의해 산불 피해 정도를 분류하고자 하며, 1차와 2차에 걸쳐 요인분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과 1차 요인 분석에서는 분류하기 어려웠던 산불 발생 지역에 포함되어 있는 하천의 수초, 논두렁 등을 2차 요인분석에 의하여 비교적 정확하게 분류할 수 있었다. 또한, 1차 요인분석으로 분류된 영역들에 대하여 2차 요인분석을 하여 산불 피해가 경미한 지역과 강한 지역을 각각 분류 할 수 있었다. 이를 검증하기 위하여 위성영상에서 얻은 산불 피해 영상과 분광반사계를 이용하여 얻은 실측 자료와는 높은 상관관계를 가지고 있으므로 위성영상자료를 이용하여 산불 피해 정도를 분류하는데 유용하게 이용될 수 있다.

휘핑계수-수중폭발 가스구체 압력파 크기의 척도 (Whipping factor - a Measure of Damage Potential of an UNDEX Bubble Pulse)

  • A new novel Whipping Factor is proposed as a measure of the ship damage potential due to an underwater explosion bubble pulse. The factor was derived from the relationships among the charge weight, its depth and the fluid acceleration due to pulsating gas bubble. From the whipping response analyses for three uniform Timoshenko beams with similar characteristics of real naval surface ships, we have confirmed the maximum bending moment responses of beams due to whipping are almost same if the applied whipping factor is constant regardless of the charge weights and depths, which could validate the proposed whipping factor.

Demand response modification factor for the investigation of inelastic response of base isolated structures

  • In this study, the effect of flexibility of superstructures and nonlinear characteristics of LRB (Lead Rubber Bearing) isolator on inelastic response of base isolated structures is investigated. To demonstrate the intensity of damage in superstructures, demand response modification factor without the consideration of damping reduction factor, demand RI, is used and the N2 method is applied to compute this factor. To evaluate the influence of superstructure flexibility on inelastic response of base isolated structures, different steel intermediate moment resisting frames with different heights have been investigated. In lead rubber bearing, the rubber provides flexibility and the lead is the source of damping; variations of aforementioned characteristics are also investigated on inelastic response of superstructures. It is observed that an increase in height of superstructure leads to higher value of demand RI till 4-story frame but afterward this factor remains constant; in other words, an increase in height until 4-story frame causes more damage in the superstructure but after that superstructure's damage is equal to the 4-story frame's. The results demonstrate that the low value of second stiffness (rubber stiffness in LRBs) tends to show a significant decrease in demand RI. Increase in value of characteristic strength (yield strength of the lead in LRBs) leads to decrease in the demand RI.

열수송관 파손확률 추정 방법론 개발 (Methodology for Estimating the Probability of Damage to a Heat Transmission Pipe)

  • 도심지 지하에 매설된 열수송관 등 지하매설관이 점차 노후화함에 따라 파손에 의한 인적, 경제적 피해가 증가하고 있다. 외부로 노출되지 않아 파손 등 문제점을 즉시 확인하기 어려운 열수송관의 특징을 고려할 때, 시설물 유지관리를 통해 주기적으로 수집하는 이력정보를 기반으로 시설물의 상태를 간접적으로 확인하는 방법이 현실적이다. 본 논문에서는 열수송관 이력정보를 검토하여 파손확률과 연관성을 가지는 평가인자를 도출하고, 이를 통해 파손확률을 추정하는 방법론을 제시하고자 한다. 파손확률 추정을 위한 영향인자는 유럽의 사례, 국내 열수송관 관리기준 등을 분석해 도출하였으며, 데이터의 확보 가능성도 함께 고려하여 선정하였다. 열수송관 설치기준이 변경된 1999년을 기준으로 매설시기에 따라 2가지 파손확률 추정 함수를 달리 제시하고 관경, 용도, 관리주체 등 평가인자별 정보에 따른 가중치를 부여하여 파손확률을 보정하여 파손확률추정의 신뢰성을 확보하였다.

비소와 크롬에 의한 산화적 스트레스와 염색체 상해에 대한 셀레늄의 방어 효과 (An anti-clastogenic Role of Selenium in Arsenic- and Chromium-induced Oxidative Stress Causing Chromosomal Damages)

  • This experiment was carried out to examine the roles of selenium in arsenic- and chromium-induced oxidative stress, which results in chromosomal damage, such as sister chromatid exchange (SCE) and chromosomal aberration (CA). For this purpose, the frequency of CA and SCE related to the level of 0xidative stress were analyzed. Selenium decreased the frequency of CA induced by As. In order to evaluate the effect of selenium on clastogenic factors, media from As- and Cr-treated cells were ultrafiltered and added again to cells in the presence or absence of selenium. Selenium decreased the frequency of SCE by As and Cr. This observation indicates the possibility of presence of clastogenic factor. In addition, the clastogenic factor would be involed in oxidative stress since selenium decreased the level of oxidative stress. Thus, it is suggested that selenium may play a role as an anti-clastogenic effector by preventing the oxidative stress, thereby decreasing the frequency of Asand Cr-induced chromosomal damage.

정적변위를 이용한 교량의 손상도 평가기법 (A Damage Assessment Technique for Bridges Using Static Displacements)

  • 본 논문에서는 정적 처짐데이터를 이용한 교량의 강성추정에 관한 기법을 개발하였다. 제안된 기법은 주기적으로 교량의 자중에 의한 처짐을 계측하여 이들 처짐값의 변화량을 이용하여 손상의 진행정도를 규명하는 기법으로써 재하시험이 필요하지 않으며, 최근 활발히 진행되고 있는 계측모니터링 시스템으로부터 획득된 계측데이터를 정량적으로 분석하는 기법으로 활용이 가능하리라 판단된다. 손상평가를 위한 정식화과정에서 부재의 손상은 강성의 저감으로 표현하였으며, 부재의 질량과 초기강성은 실측 또는 도면을 통하여 획득이 가능하다고 가정하였다. 제안된 기법의 타당성 검증을 위하여 수치모형을 통한 손상도 추정결과를 제시하였으며, 기존의 손상도 추정기법 중 비교적 손상에 대한 민감도가 높은 모드형상을 이용한 기법과 손상도 추정결과를 비교하였다. 또한, 손상추정결과를 정확도를 감소시키는 노이즈의 영향을 분석하기 위하여 정적응답자료에 백색잡음을 추가하여 손상도를 추정하였으며, 손상부재의 수가 손상추정 결과에 미치는 영향을 검토하였다.

  • This study develops practical models and methods for the assessment of safety and capacity rating of existing P.C. girder bridges based on the reliability methods. One of the main objectives of the study is to propose a practical but realistic limit state model for safety assessment and LRFR rating criteria, which explicitly incorporates the degree of deterioration and damage as well as actual condition of P.C. girder bridges in terms of the damage factor and the response ratio. The damage factor proposed in the paper is defined as the ratio of the current estimated stiffness to the intact base-line stiffness of a member. Based on the observation and the results of applications to existing bridges, it may be concluded that the proposed methods for the assessment and capacity rating models, which explicitly account for the uncertainties and effects of degree of deterioration or damage, provide more realistic and consistent safety-assessment and capacity rating.
