  • In recent years, the United States has used the Load Duration Curve (LDC) method to identify water pollution problems, considering the size of the pollutant load in the entire stream flow condition to effectively evaluate Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). A study on the improvement of the target water quality evaluation method was carried out by comparing evaluations of two consecutive years of water quality and LDC data for 41 unit watersheds (14 main streams and 27 tributaries). As a result, the achievement rate of the target water quality evaluation method, according to current regulations, was 68-93%, and that by the LDC method was 82-93%. Evaluating the target water quality using the LDC method results in a reduction in the administrative burden and the total amount of planning as compared to the current method.

  • To provide the basic information for the water quality management of the Sumjin River Basin, delivery ratios for flow duration were studied. Using the day-interval data set of discharge and water quality observed from the Chooryeong-cheon watershed, the flow-duration and discharge-load relation curves for the watershed were established, then the load-duration curve was constructed. Delivery ratios for flow duration were also developed. Delivery ratios showed wide variation according to flow conditions. In general, delivery ratio of high flow condition showed higher value reflecting nonpoint source pollution contribution from the forest dominating watershed. To resolve this problem, a regression model explaining the relation between flow rate and delivery ratio was suggested. The delivery ratios for different flow regime could be used for pollutant load estimation and TMDL (Total maximum daily load) development.

  • This paper presents Kohonen neural network and wavelet transform analysis based technique for industrial peak load forecasting for the purpose of peak demand control. Firstly, one year of historical load data were sorted and clustered into several groups using Kohonen neural network and then wavelet transforms are adopted using the Biorthogonal mother wavelet in order to forecast the peak load of one hour ahead. The 5-level decomposition of the daily industrial load curve is implemented to consider the weather sensitive component of loads effectively. The wavelet coefficients associated with certain frequency and time localization is adjusted using the conventional multiple regression method and the components are reconstructed to predict the final loads through a six-scale synthesis technique.

  • Reliable flow measurement for dry season is very important to set up the in-stream flow exactly and total maximum daily load control program in the basin. Especially, in the points which tidal current effects are dominant because reliability of the low measurement decrease. The reliable measuring methods are needed. In this study, we analysis the water surface elevation difference of water surface elevation. Quantity relationship to consider tidal currents in these regions. It is known that tidal current effects from Nakdong river barrage are dominant in Samrangjin measuring station. We developed multiple regression equation with water surface elevation, quantity, and difference of water surface elevation and compared these results water measured rating curve. All of these regression equation including linear regression equation and log regression equation fits better measured data them existing water surface elevation quantity line and Among three equations, the log regression equation is best to represent the measured the rating curve in Samrangjin point. The log regression equation is useful method to obtain the quantity in the regions which tidal currents are dominant.

  • In this study, pollutant loads delivery ratio by flow duration in Hwangryoung A watershed was estimated. The delivery ratio was estimated with measured data by Ministry of Environment(MOE) and the regression equation based on geomorphic parameters. Eight day interval flow data measured by the MOE were converted to daily flow to calculate daily load and flow duration curve by correlating data of neighboring station which has daily flow data. Regression equation developed by previous study was tested to study watershed and found to be satisfactory. The delivery ratios estimated by two methods were compared. For the case of Biochemical oxygen demand(BOD), the delivery ratios of low flow condition were 7.6 and 15.5% by measured and regression equation, respectively. Also, the delivery ratios of Total phosphorus(T-P) for normal flow condition were 13.3 and 6.3% by measured and regression equation, respectively.

  • The paper presents a method of assessing the adequate tapaclty of photovoltaic generation systems for public buildings based on analysis of load variation patterns of customers. When PV systems are installed for supplying power for the customer load, reverse power relay is required by the guideline to be installed at the point of common coupling with the power network. The suggested method analyzes daily, weekly and monthly load demand of the customer that Irishes PV system installation, and determines the appropriate rating of the PV system for preventing PV generation from exceeding the customer demand. This work is expected to support renewable energy dissemination projects of public organizations.

  • The objective of this study is to construct the watershed management system with link of the non-point sources model and to estimate delivery ratio duration curves for various pollutants. For the total water pollution load management system, non-point source model should be performed with the study of the characteristic about non-point sources and loadings of non-point source and the allotment of pollutant in each area. In this study, daily flow rates and delivered pollutant loads of Nakdong river basin are simulated with modified TANK model and minimum variance unbiased estimator and SWAT model. Based on the simulation results, flow duration curves, load duration curves, and delivery ratio duration curves have been established. Then GIS analysis is performed to obtain several hydrological geomorphic characteristics such as watershed area, stream length, watershed slope and runoff curve number. As a result, the SWAT simulation results show good agreements in terms of discharge, BOD, TN, TP but for more exact simulation should be kept studying about variables and parameters which are needed for simulation. And as a result of the characteristic discharges, pollutants loading with the runoff and delivery ratios, non-point sources effects were higher than point sources effects in the small-scale test bed of Nakdong river basin.

  • For the development of flow duration curves for the management of 41 Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) units of the Nakdong River basin, first, an equation for estimating daily flow rates as well as the level of correlation (correlation and determination coefficients) was extrapolated through regression analysis of discrete (Ministry of Environment) and continuous (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation) measurement data. The equation derived from the analysis was used to estimate daily flow rates in order to develop flow duration curves for each TMDL unit. By using the equation, the annual flow duration curves and flow curves, for the entire period and for each TMDL unit of the basin, were developed to be demonstrated in this research. Standard flow rates (abundant-, ordinary-, low- and drought flows) for major flow duration periods were calculated based on the annual flow duration curves. Then, the flow rates, based on percentile ranks of exceedance probabilities (5, 25, 50, 75, and 95%), were calculated according to the flow duration curves for the entire period and are suggested in this research. These results can be used for feasibility assessment of the set values of primary and secondary standard flow rates for each river system, which are derived from complicated models. In addition, they will also be useful for the process of implementing TMDL management, including evaluation of the target level of water purity based on load duration curves.

  • In this study, the method of annual sediment estimation for reservoir long-term operation is proposed. Long-term daily precipitation and evaporation are predicted by Markov Chain. Using these values, reservoir inflow is simulated by NWS-PC model. Reservoir sediment load is estimated by sediment rating relation curve which is observed. From the simulation results, it was found that each simulated value by Markov Chain and NWS-PC was well compared to the observed ones and also estimated reservoir sediment was appropriate to the compared values using empirical equations. It is thought that the proposed method for estimation of reservoir sediment can be useful used to operate the reservoir.

  • It is difficult to manage hotspot area and to establish the reduction plan considering with spatial-distribution on Korea TMDLs (Total Maximun Daily Loads) system. To solve this problems, methods of Load Duration Curve (LDC) using long-term flow and water quality data, and spatial-analysis were applied on present TMDLs. Jinwi A watershed which is enforced TMDLs plan were selected to study area. Results of application of suggested methods in this study to Jinwi watershed, Hwangguji tributary was selected to hotspot area and Jinwi tributary was exclued. Also, middle area of Hwangguji tributary was needed a reduction plan for the protection of non-point source pollution. In downstream area, livestock manure should be managed additionally. The new methods suggested in this study were useful to increase healthiness for total watershed.
