This paper evaluated the water resources aspect of the operating results of the Daecheong Multipurpose Dam for the last 21 years. The elements that were evaluated included the amount of water supply from the dam. volume of outflow from the regulating dam, changes in the runoff volume at the dam site and downstream, and variations in the water supply capacity of the Daecheong Multipurpose Dam and the Geum River Barrage Dam situated in the estuary. The rainfall-runoff model was used to evaluate the changes in the runoff volume, and the water balance analysis system was used to evaluate the variations in the dams'water supply capacities. The volume of domestic and industrial water supply from the Daecheong Multipurpose Dam increased to 6.1 times for the last 21 years from 61${\times}$$10^6$$m^3$ in 1981 to 375${\times}$$10^6$$m^3$in 2001. The rate of outflow to inflow of the Daecheong Dam was analyzed 1.30 times in dry season, 1.12 times in semi-dry season, and 0.90 times in rainy season. The volume of inflow to the Geum River Barrage Dam down- stream after the dam's construction increased to 1.25 times in dry season and 1.02 times in semi-dry season and decreased to 0.94 times in rainy season. The water supply capacity of the estuary barrage dam almost did not change in cases with or without the Daecheong Multipurpose Dam, but storages were largely affected by the outflows of the Daecheong Multipurpose Dam.

Riverbed change is greatly influenced by artificial factors such as dam construction, gravel collection, and river improvement. This study simulated a long-term bed change based on the GSTARS3 model using actual data from the area downstream of the Geum River Daecheong Dam and compared the estimation with a section of the actual measurement. As a result, it was found that the section of the actual measurement was far lower than the result of the simulation in terms of long-term bed change. While the area downstream of Daecheong Dam displayed approximately an average of 2.29 m of streambed degradation on average while the upper stream area showed approximately 0.63 m of bed degradation over 24 years. In the simulation of the area downstream of Daecheong Dam based on the GSTARS3 model, similar bed degradation was observed. However, a great difference was detected between the result and the actual measurement. According to the cause analysis, the riverbed in the area downstream of Daecheong Dam has continuously degraded due to the dam construction and mass collection of gravel. The mass collection of gravel was the main cause of riverbed change. It was found that about 76% of all riverbed degradation was caused by the mass collection of gravel.

In order to analyze the water storage of the Daecheong dam after constructing the Yongdam dam situated in upstream, a daily cascaded simulation model for analyzing water storages in the Yongdam-Daecheong dams was developed. Operation scenarios of the Yongdam dam were selected to 8 cases with the combinations of downstream outflows and water supplies to the Jeonju region. Daily water storages in the Daecheong dam was analyzed daily by simulating from 1983 to 2004. The results are summarized as follows. Firstly, water supplies from the Daecheong dam were analyzed to amount $1,964.2Mm^3$ on a yearly average in case without the Yongdam dam. In case with the Yongdam dam, water supplies from the Daecheong dam were analyzed to amount $1,858.7\~1,927.3Mm^3$ in case with downstream outflow of $5\;m^3$ is, and were analyzed to amount $1,994.9\~2,017.8Mm^3$ in case with downstream outflow of $10\;m^3/s $. These values are compared to $1,649Mm^3$ applied in design. Secondly, reservoir use rate which was defined rate of water supply to effective water storage reached $241.3\% in case without the Yongdam dam. In case with the Yongdam dam, reservoir use rate reached $228.3\~236.8\% In case with downstream outflow of $5\;m^3/s$, and reached $245.1\~247.9\% in case with downstream outflow of $10\;m^3/s$. Thirdly, runoff rate which is defined rate of dam inflow to areal rainfall reached $57.3\% in case without the Yongdam dam. In case with the Yongdam dam, reservoir use rate reached $62.0\~68.4\% in case with downstream outflow of $5\;m^3/s$, and reached $64.1\~68.5\% in case with downstream outflow of $10\;m^3/s$. Fourth, in case with downstream outflow of $10\;m^3/s$ is from the Yongdam dam, appropriate water supply amounts to the Jeonju region were analyzed to only $0.50Mm^3/day$ from the daily simulation of water storages in the Yongdam dam. Comprehensively, water supply capacity of the Daecheong dam was analyzed to affect in small amounts in spite of the construction of the Yonsdam dam. It is effected to achieve the effective water management of the Yongdam dam and the Daecheong dam by using the developed cascaded model.
In order to solve water quality problem of domestic dam reservoir, many projects have been performed in a point of view to restoration of water quality. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of release from sediment on water quality and release characteristics. Daecheong dam reservoir was investigated for two years, from 1998 to 1999. The nutrient release rates of Daecheong reservoir is less than foreign eutrophic reservoir at anoxic condition. For the evaluation of the effect of nutrient release on water quality, internal and external loading was calculated at Daecheong reservoir. As total phosphorus loading from sediment is calculated 9.3 ton/yr and inflow loading from Daecheong reservoir watershed 118 ton/yr, internal loading shows the portion of 7.88% to external loading. At this study, because sampling point was choosed at the point where much sediment is accumulated, experimental result is more than average release rates. Because Daecheong reservoir shows complete thermal stratification and anoxic condition below 30m from water surface in summer seasons, released phosphorus from sediment can not transfer to epilimnion and eventually resettles. Therefore sediment has insignificant impacts on water quality on Daecheong dam reservoir.
The objectives of this study are an establishment of developing strategies of environment-friendly agriculture(EFA) around the Daecheong and Chungju Dam. To establish strategic target, a series of farm household survey were conducted for farmers residing around the Dacchcong and Chungju Dam. The sample size of the survey is 233 respectively. As a result, the farmers rgcognized that EFA is fit for around Daecheong and Chungiu Dam as well as the prospects is very bright. In conclusion, the main streams to develop EFA are come up with vision and purpose around dam area, systematic connection of environment-friendly agricultural capability around dam area, construction of organic resource circulation system, and connecting propulsion with green tourism including quantitative and qualitative upgrade of environment-friendly agricultural products.

There are many long and round shape shores due to terrain characteristics in Daecheong reservoir. Therefore it is indicated different spatial distribution of algae every year since the stream is being regulated by these terrain characteristics and reservoir operation about inflow and outflow discharge. Also oversupply of nutrient salt from tributaries of Daecheong reservoir where pollutants were concentrated generates massive growth of algae and depending on hydrological, reservoir operation condition, those proliferated algae at the stagnant tributaries moves to the mainstream of Daecheong reservoir which could create problems of water quality. In this study, it was analyzed the tendency of algae generation by examining algae occurring status for the last 4 years since 2008, and implemented hydraulic analysis at Daecheong reservoir through numerical tracer simulation by applying 3-dimensional hydrodynamic model, ELCOM. Also it was implemented a quantitative analysis of causal relationship based on the algae generation tendency and hydraulic behavior at Daecheong reservoir. Through numerical tracer simulation in this study, it could be noticed the degree of spread of inflow indicated similar trend to the algae occurring status at Daecheong reservoir and verified the different tendency of algae generation in 2011 unlike previous year caused by the rise of water temperature.
The objectives for this study were to evaluate spatial and temporal characteristics of water quality, based on long-term water quality monitoring data during 1993~2008. We found that physico-chemical and ecological conditions in the Daecheong Reservoir (DR) were modified by the construction of upper dam (i.e., Yongdam Reservoir). total phosphorus (TP), Secchi depth (SD), and chlorophyll-a (CHL) in the DR showed significant longitudinal decreases along the headwater-to-the downlake, indicating a large spatial variation, and this gradient was more intensified during the high-flow season (monsoon). Nutrient-rich water containing high nitrogen and phosphorus in the monsoon season (July~August) passed through the reservoir as a density current in the metalimnetic depth, and also high suspended solids increased in the metalimnetic depth, especially during the monsoon. According to the deviation analysis of Trophic State Index (TSI), >50% of TSI (CHL)-TSI (SD) and TSI (CHL)-TSI (TP) values were negatives, so that inorganic suspended solids (non-votatile solids) influenced the underwater light regime against phytoplankton growth. Also, ratios of CHL:TP after the dam construction evidently increased, compared to the values before the upper dam constructions, indicating a greater yield of phytoplankton in the unit phosphorus. Overall data showed that ecological and functional changes in Daecheong Reservoir occurred after the construction of upper dam (Yongdam Reservoir).

This study proposes an evaluation method of water supply capacity of a dam, which uses the concept of return period by conducting bivariate frequency analysis of dam storage capacity. The proposed method was applied to the Daecheong Dam for the evaluation. Additionally, the return periods of Daecheong Dam were estimated for the representative drought events in Korea, whose results were also reviewed. Summarizing the results is as follows. First, this study evaluated several climatological factors related to the water supply capacity of dams in Korea to conduct the bivariate frequency analysis and selected the storage on May and the storage difference between June and October as variables for analysis. Second, as an evaluation result of the water supply capacity of the Daecheong Dam, it was found that the Daecheong Dam secures the water supply capacity under 20 years of return period. Finally, it was also confirmed that the proposed method in this study is valid to analyze and estimate the return period of representative drought events occurred in the Korean peninsula.

Reservoirs play a key role in the carbon cycle between terrestrial and marine systems and are pathways that release greenhouse gases(GHGs), CO2, CH4, and N2O, into the atmosphere by decomposing organic matters. Developed countries have been actively conducting research on carbon emission assessment of dam reservoirs for over 10 years under the leadership of UNESCO/IHA, but associated research is very rare in Korea. In particular, the GHGs footprint evaluation, which calculates the change in net carbon emission considering the watershed environment between pre- and post- impoundment, is very important in evaluating the carbon emission of hydroelectric dams. The objective of this study was to estimate the GHG emissions and footprints in Daecheong Reservoir using the G-res Tool, an online platform developed by UNESCO/IHA. The G-res Tool estimates CO2 and CH4 emissions in consideration of diverse pathway fluxes of GHGs from the reservoir and characterizes changes in GHG fluxes over 100 years based on the expected lifetime of the dam. The input required to use the G-res Tool include data related to watersheds, reservoirs, and dams, and most were collected through the government's public portal. As a result of the study, the GHG footprint of Daecheong Reservoir was estimated to be 93 gCO2eq/m2/yr, which is similar to that of other reservoirs around the world in the same climate zone. After impoundment, the CH4 diffusion emission from the reservoir was 73 gCO2eq/m2/yr, also similar to those of the overseas reservoirs, but the CH4 bubbling emission, degassing emission, and CO2 diffusion emissions were 44, 34, 252 gCO2eq/m2/yr, respectively, showing a rather high tendency. Since the dam reservoir carbon footprint evaluation is essential for the Clean Development Mechanism evaluation of hydroelectric power generation, continuous research is needed in the future. In particular, experimental studies that can replace the emission factors obtained from the overseas dam reservoirs currently used in the G-res Tool should be promoted.
