  • We propose a soft QoS-based borrowing scheme for call admission control(CAC) in DVB-RCS(Digital Video Broadcast-Return Channel via Satellite). Some of the ongoing calls temporarily and fairly release bandwidths that can be used to accommodate a new call in an overloaded satellite network. The amount of bandwidth borrowed from each call is proportional to each user's critical bandwidth ratio, one of parameters for soft QoS mechanism. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the system performance in terms of call blocking probability and bandwidth utilization.

  • The Digital Frequency Synthesizer(DFS) that generates the wideband signal with high speed frequency hopping rate and high frequency resolution characteristics was designed and implemented in this paper The DFS was applied as local oscillator for direct frequency conversion IF modules of DVB-RCS, which directly generates the transmission immediate frequency signal by using DDS and wideband PLL technologies. The DDS technology provides high speed frequency hopping rate and high frequency resolution characteristics, which are also the DVB-RCS requirement. The wideband PLL technology also provides the wideband signal generation, which is a necessity for direct frequency conversion modules. The implemented DFS provides the spurious suppression characteristic of -50 dBc and less, frequency resolution of 0.233 Hz and frequency hopping rate of 125 ns, respectively. Also the DFS represents the amplitude flatness of 3 dB and less in the pass-band, and phase noise characteristic of -75 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz frequency offset.

  • Phase noise spectrum distributions of signal generators for next-generation VSAT satellite system based on DVB-RCS2 were analyzed in this paper. The forward link of VSAT system utilizes the APSK higher-order modulation methods based on the DVB-S2 ACM, the modulation methods of the return link utilizes the higher-order PSK and QAM based on the DVB-RCS2. In digital satellite system using the higher-order modulation techniques, the phase noise have an effect on transmission performance, the transmission performance is dominantly degraded by the phase noise of signal generators in the transmission system. The phase noise spectrum distribution of signal generators are analyzed by considering the ACM conditions that adopts the modulation techniques and data rates due to satellite transmission environment. The proper phase noise spectrum distribution for next-generation VSAT system based on DVB-RCS2 are proposed from the analyzed phase noise spectrum characteristics.

  • In general, two way satellite communication systems based on TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access) require network clock synchronization between hub station and remote terminals. This paper describes basic concepts for network clock synchronization based on NCR(Network Clock Reference) clock recovery scheme as suggested in DVB-S2/ RCS2 international standards. in addition, a new NCR insertion method has been proposed and evaluated in terms of supporting CCM mode as well as ACM mode which optimizes throughput by changing code rates and modulation types ranging from QPSK to 32-APSK.

  • This paper proposes the specific code synchronization technique for DS-SS(Direct Sequence-Spread Spectrum transmission in the DVB-RCS +M standard. DS-SS is better than multi-carrier transmission method under nonlinear channel but imposes a long acquisition time. To improve the synchronization aspect, the robust correlation structure is introduced for acquisition and the nonlinear delay lock loop is done for tracking. MAT(Mean Acquisition Time) performances is shown to validate its superiority. In addition, code tracking and jitter performances are done when code tracking algorithm based on 2 oversamples which is not influenced by sampling clock timing offset and carrier freq. offset is used.

  • Digital satellite communication systems are usually integrated with terrestrial systems to provide various services. In these cases, they should satisfy the performance objectives defined by the terrestrial systems. Recommendation ITU-R S.1062 specifies the error performance objectives of digital satellite communication systems operating below 15 GHz. The error performance are given in terms of bit error probability divided by the number of the average bit errors in the burst ($\alpha$). This paper presents a theoretical method to estimate $\alpha$ that is a very important parameter in the satellite communication systems to analyze the error performance objectives. We show performance estimation result of DVB-RCS turbo code using the presented method, and verify them by comparing to the simulation results.

  • This paper considers a timeslot assignment problem in an interactive satellite multimedia (ISM) system with digital video broadcast-return channel via satellite (DVB-RCS). The timeslot assignment problem is formulated as a binary integer programming to maximize the overall weighted throughput and is shown to be NP-hard. Thus, three real-time heuristic algorithms including ratio-based, packet-size (PS)-based, and transmission gain (TG)-based are derived, and some computational experiments are made. Considering the results, the ratio-based heuristic algorithm is demonstrated to be the most effective and efficient. We propose adapting the ratio-based heuristic algorithm to the timeslot assignment problem to greatly improve the ISM system utilization.

  • In this paper, we introduce the efficient carrier phase estimating algorithm collaborate with the channel decoder of turbo coded QPSK modulation for mobile DVB-RCS systems. At low SNR, the phase estimation using soft information of turbo decoder is able to improve power efficiency because of achieving the good synchronization. We investigate performance of external single estimator and internal multiple estimator in the PSP (Per Survivor Processing) manner over AWGN channel. For phase estimation, the LMS (Least Mean Square) scheme is considered. Three different APP-based methods are also proposed.

  • This paper addresses the design and implementation of compensation of rain attenuation for Ka-band satellite communication system complied with DVB-RCS[2]. A structure of rain fade compensation scheme in the Ka-band satellite communication system is presented. Rain fade compensation scheme in this paper is mainly applied into return-link, which is the path through which user terminal transmit the data tn hub system providing a service. Symbol rate and code rate of channel code are used as variable transmission parameter for rain fade compensation. For estimation of channel environment, SNR of the user terminal which is measured by demodulator of hub system is used. Rain fade compensation scheme in the paper changes the symbol rate and/or code rate according to the measured SNR so that it can compensate the attenuation of the signal.

  • We developed a method for optimal superframe design in the multi-frequency time division multiple access (MF-TDMA) return-link of a satellite multimedia interactive network called a digital video broadcasting return channel over satellite (DVB-RCS) sub-network. To find the optimal superframe pattern with the maximum data throughput, we formulated the design problem as a non-linear combinatorial optimization problem. We also devised the proposed simple method so that it would have field applicability for improving radio resource utilization in the MF-TDMA return link.
