A Variable Block Encoding Method Using the Space-Time Redundancy of Stereoscopic Vectors (양안시차 벡터의 시공간적 중복성을 이용한 가변블록 부호화 방안)

  • 본 논문에서는 비대칭적 화질을 갖는 양안식 3DTV 시스템에서 좌우영상간의 화질차이가 크게 발생하는 경우, 열화된 우영상의 화질을 보상하기위한 부가정보로 양안시차 벡터맵을 사용하는데, 이때 넓은 대역폭을 갖는 부가정보를 효율적으로 부호화하여 전송하기위한 방법을 제안한다. 공간적인 중복성을 피하기 위해 쿼드트리 분해방식을 적용하였고, 양안시차 벡터의 시간적 중복성을 고려하여 부호화 효율을 높였다. 제안된 압축 알고리듬인 가변블록 부호화 방안을 적용한 복원영상은 비슷한 전송률을 갖는 고정블록 복원영상에 비해 개선된 PSNR을 가짐을 실험을 통해 확인하였다.

Transmission Performance Analysis for Terrestrial Digital Broadcast Systems According to Hierarchical Modulation Factor(α) (계층변조 지수(α)에 따른 지상파 디지털 방송 시스템의 전송성능 분석)

  • An analytical method for identifying terrestrial broadcasting coverages is proposed for a terrestrial broadcasting transmission system adopting a hierarchical modulation technique. Bit Error Rates(BERs) are derived for hierarchically modulated non-uniform QAM constellations based on the Q-function analysis in AWGN environments. The derived BERs depend on the hierarchical modulation factor ${\alpha}$(HMF) and could be mapped to the broadcasting coverages according to the link budget analysis based on the log-distance path loss model. Finally the broadcasting coverage ratios for high priority(HP) streams and low priority(LP) streams are calculated and presented for the determination of the HMF.

  • Recently, there has been much interest in realistic broadcasting that is a new field following HDTV and 3DTV. In general. the realistic broadcasting is composed of diverse components such as aquisition, authoring, compression, transmission and display, posing many challenging tasks. It is necessary that the types of realistic contents need to be defined prior to the development of realistic broadcasting systems. Based upon them, other components need to be designed and developed. In this paper, we propose some realistic contents suitable to the realistic broadcasting as well as techniques of generating them. Our proposed contents consist of stereoscopic multiview sequences, object-based stereoscopic images, depth map-based image compositing and the composition of stereoscopic real and graphics images. Content generation techniques and their associated software modules are presented with realistic images produced from our experiments. Those contents are produced to deliver stereoscopic perception, immersion and realism to the users as shown in our experimental results.

  • In current digital broadcasting systems, GEM(Globally Executable MHP)-based middlewares such as MHP(Multimedia Home Platform), OCAP(OpenCable Application Platform), ACAP(Advanced Common Application Platform) are the norm. Despite much of the common characteristics shared, such as MPEG-2 and DSM-CC(Digital Storage Media-Command and Control) protocols, the information and data structures they need are slightly different, which results in incompatibility issues. In this paper, in line with an effort to develop an integrated DTV middleware, we propose a general-purpose, reconfigurable DSM-CC architecture for supporting various standard GEM-based middlewares without code modifications. First, we identify DSM-CC components that are common and thus can be shared by all GEM-based middlewares. Next, the system is provided with middleware-specific information and data structures in the form of XML. Since the XML information can be parsed dynamically at run time, it can be interchanged either statically or dynamically for a specific target middleware. As for the performance issues, the response time and usage frequency of DSM-CC module highly contribute to the performance of STB(Set-Top-Box). In this paper, we also propose an efficient application cache management strategy and evaluate its performance. The performance result has shown that the cache strategy reflecting user preferences greatly helps to reduce response time for executing application.

  • In this paper, we suggested new additional data transmission technology for T-DMB system using MOK-SS(Mary Orthogonal Keying- Spread Spectrum)mapping method. We applied revised watermarking method of TxID(Transmitter Identification) technology mainly had been used for conventional ATSC-DTV(Advanced Television Systems Committee - Digital TV). And proposed schemes enhanced additional data rate using MOK-SS mapping method. We certified availability of our proposed technology by using various simulation and error rate performance analysis.

  • In this paper, we explain capturing, postprocessing, and depth generation methods using multiple color and depth cameras. Although the time-of-flight (TOF) depth camera measures the scene's depth in real-time, there are noises and lens distortion in the output depth images. The correlation between the multi-view color images and depth images is also low. Therefore, it is essential to correct the depth images and then we use them to generate the depth information of the scene. The results of stereo matching based on the disparity information from the depth cameras showed the better performance than the previous method. Moreover, we obtained the accurate depth information even at the occluded or textureless regions which are the weaknesses of stereo matching.

  • Multi-view video including depth image is necessary to develop a new compression encoding technique for storage and transmission, because of a huge amount of data. Layered depth image is an efficient representation method of multi-view video data. This method makes a data structure that is synthesis of multi-view color and depth image. This efficient method to compress new contents is suggested to use layered depth image representation and to apply for video compression encoding by using 3D warping. This paper proposed enhanced compression method using layered depth image representation and H.264/AVC video coding technology. In experimental results, we confirmed high compression performance and good quality of reconstructed image.

  • Recently, as the development of 3D contents service, production of 4D media that user can feel physical effects by the scene of movie has been increased. This 4D media uses the SMMD (Single Media Multiple Devices) method to give users enhanced effects with multiple devices playing rather than the SMSD (Single Media Single Device) method with single device playing in a smart TV environment. To give more sensible effects to users, from the beginning of making one media, we produced 4D media that consists of 3D contents and the SEM (Sensory Effect Metadata) to define effects of the scene. 4D media is transmitted to a HS (Home Server) to represent 3D contents in 3DTV and multiple devices with synchronized way. In this paper, we suggested the concept and overall 4D media broadcasting service system architecture, aggregator time acquisition, media time scheduling, real-sense device scheduling, evaluation results, user interfaces and implemented devices.

Near-Optimum Blind Decision Feedback Equalization for ATSC Digital Television Receivers

  • This paper presents a near-optimum blind decision feedback equalizer (DFE) for the receivers of Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) digital television. By adopting a modified trellis decoder (MTD) with a trace- back depth of 1 for the decision device in the DFE, we obtain a hardware-efficient, blind DFE approaching the performance of an optimum DFE which has no error propagation. In the MTD, the absolute distance is used rather than the squared Euclidean distance for the computation of the branch metrics. This results in a reduction of the computational complexity over the original trellis decoding scheme. Compared to the conventional slicer, the MTD shows an outstanding performance improvement in decision error probability and is comparable to the original trellis decoder using the Euclidean distance. Reducing error propagation by use of the MTD in the DFE leads to the improvement of convergence performance in terms of convergence speed and residual error. Simulation results show that the proposed blind DFE performs much better than the blind DFE with the slicer, and the difference is prominent at the trellis decoder following the blind DFE.

  • In this paper, we looked into the feature of a transmission system of the terrestrial digital broadcasting system and considered a ATSC 8-VSB transmission standard. Also, we analyzed the performance with the influence of an interchannel interference by the ATSC standard. As a result, the case not to consider Rician fading, The influence of the interfere did not exist if Frequency interval fell off over the 20MHz. The case to consider Rician fading, the system had the degradation of the performance.
