Design of a broadband dual dipole antenna for indoor digital TV reception (실내 디지털 TV수신용 광대역 이중 다이폴 안테나 설계)

  • In this paper, a design method for a dual dipole antenna for an operation in the frequency band of 470-806 MHz for indoor digital TV (DTV) is studied. The proposed antenna is composed of two planar dipoles connected by parallel strip line, and the antenna is fed by a microstrip line. By employing different lengths of dipoles, a broadband characteristics is obtained, and the antenna is size-reduced by bending both ends of the longer dipole. The effects of each parameters on the antenna performance are examined by simulation, and the parameters are optimized for the DTV use. A prototype antenna with optimized parameters for the indoor DTV use is fabricated on an FR4 substrate and tested experimentally. The experimental results show that the frequency band for a VSWR < 2 ranges 458-864 MHz (61.4%, bandwidth 406 MHz, 1.89:1), and it corresponds fairly well with the simulated band 448-868 MHz (63.8%, bandwidth 420 MHz, 1.94:1).

  • In this paper, we introduce a design method for a broadband planar quasi-Yagi antenna (QYA) for terrestrial digital television (DTV) receiving. The coplanar strip line feeding the driver dipole is connected to a microstrip line and is terminated by short circuit. By appending a wide strip-type director at a location close to the driver dipole, a broadband impedance matching and a gain characteristics in a high frequency region are obtained. The gain characteristics in a low frequency region are improved by adding a reflector formed by a truncated ground plane. To reduce the antenna size, the strip-type dipole and reflector are modified to half bowtie (V)-shaped elements. The effects of various parameters on the antenna characteristics are examined. An antenna, as an design example for the proposed antenna, is designed for the operation in the frequency band of 470-806 MHz for terrestrial DTV. The optimized antenna is fabricated on an FR4 substrate and tested experimentally to verify the results of this study.

The proposed antenna is composed of two planar dipoles connected through conducting strips, and the antenna is fed by a microstrip line. By employing different lengths of dipoles, a broadband characteristics is obtained, and the antenna is size-reduced by bending both ends of the longer dipole. The effects of design parameters on the antenna performance are examined by simulation, and the parameters are adjusted for terrestrial DTV band use. A prototype of the antenna for indoor DTV reception is fabricated on an FR4 substrate with a size of $240mm{\times}139.5mm$ and tested experimentally. The experiment results show that the frequency band for a VSWR < 2 ranges 458-864 MHz(61.4%), and it corresponds fairly well with the simulated band of 448-868 MHz(63.8%).

  • In this paper, a design method for a wideband square loop antenna for Digital TV applications is studied. The proposed loop antenna is a square loop antenna combined with circular sectors to connect with central feed points. The square loop is used instead of the circular loop in order to miniaturize the antenna size. The input reflection coefficient and gain characteristics of the proposed antenna are analyzed to match with the 75 ohm port impedance for DTV applications. The effects of the gap between the circular sectors and the length of the square loop on the input reflection coefficient and gain characteristics are examined to obtain the optimal design parameters. The optimized antenna is fabricated on an FR4 substrate, and the experiment results show that it operates in the frequency band of 470-1,300 MHz for a VSWR < 2, which assures the operation in the DTV band.

CPW-fed Wideband Loop Antenna for Indoor Digital TV Applications (실내 디지털 TV용 CPW-급전 광대역 루프 안테나)

  • In this paper, a design method for a CPW-fed wideband loop antenna for indoor digital TV applications is studied. The proposed loop antenna consists of a square loop and two circular sectors which connect the loop with central feed points, and the CPW feed line is inserted in the lower circular sector. The CPW feed line is designed to match with the 75 ohm port impedance for DTV applications, and the ground slots are etched in order to improve the impedance matching in the middle frequency region. The effects of the gap between the circular sectors and the location and dimension of the ground slots on the input reflection coefficient and gain characteristics are examined to obtain the optimal design parameters. The optimized antenna is fabricated on FR4 substrate, and the experiment results show that it operates in the frequency band of 463-1,280 MHz for a VSWR < 2, which assures the operation in the DTV band.

  • In this paper, a design method for a compact broadband planar monopole antenna fed by coplanar waveguide (CPW) is studied. The proposed broadband monopole is optimized for terrestrial digital television (DTV) receiving. The monopole is fed by a CPW with 75-ohm characteristic impedance on an FR4 substrate and its size is $100mm{\times}200mm$. A pair of slit is appended for size reduction and an inductive stub is loaded for the impedance matching between the feedline and monopole. The optimized monopole antenna for DTV band (470-806 MHz) is fabricated on an FR4 substrate and tested experimentally to verify the results of this study.

  • In this paper, a design method for a compact broadband planar dipole antenna fed by a microstrip (MS) line is studied. The proposed broadband dipole is optimized for terrestrial digital television (DTV) receiving. The dipole is fed by an MS line with 75-ohm characteristic impedance on an FR4 substrate and its size is $90mm{\times}180mm$. The dipole is modified to half bow-tie type for size reduction. A simplified balun is adopted for the impedance matching between the MS line and coplanar strip which feeds the dipole. The optimized dipole antenna for DTV band (470-806 MHz) is fabricated on an FR4 substrate and tested experimentally to verify the results of this study.

To reduce the antenna size, the strip-type dipole and reflector are modified to half bow-tie (V)-shaped elements. The effects of various parameters on the antenna characteristics are examined. An antenna, as a design example for the proposed antenna, is designed for the operation in the frequency band of 470-806 MHz for terrestrial DTV. The optimized antenna is fabricated on an FR4 substrate and the experimental results show that the antenna has a good performance such as a frequency band of 450-848 MHz for a VSWR < 2, gain > 4.1 dBi, and front-to-back ratio > 10.4 dB.

  • In this paper, the measurement data is analyzed and channel characteristics are derived through MIMO Channel measurements at 781MHz considering antenna correlation. 781MHz frequency band currently operates the DTV system, however, it will be allocated new mobile communication frequency band. The channel characteristics at 781MHz seem to be similar existing mobile communication system at 900MHz but quite a different part of the existing research has demonstrated. In addition, the signal procedure of the channel characteristics, considering the correlation of the antenna, for a more accurate prediction research is needed. To avoid interference with Korean DTV broadcasting, we measured channel characteristics in urban areas of Jeju island by channel sounder and $4{\times}4$ antenna. Channel characteristics with antenna correlation were derived based on the measured data in the urban area.

  • In this paper, a design method for a quasi-Yagi antenna (QYA) suitable for UHF band is studied. Due to the mutual coupling between a coplanar strip (CPS)-fed planar dipole and a conducting strip director placed close to the dipole, the dipole obtains broadband characteristics. A ground reflector improves gain in the lower frequency band, and the antenna size might be reduced by employing a bent reflector. The balun between the CPS line and the microstrip(MS) line is constructed by connecting the end of MS line and the CPS line through a shorting pin. In addition, a ring-type conductor connects the CPS line and reflector. The effects of various geometrical parameters and balun on the antenna characteristics are examined. An antenna, as an design example for the proposed antenna, is designed for the operation in the frequency band of 470-806 MHz for terrestrial DTV.
