  • The purpose of this study was to analyze fabrics suitable for use as examination gowns to determine whether examination gowns affect imaging during anterior to posterior chest examinations(Chest AP) on a digital X-ray system. Examination gowns in use at five medical centers in Seoul were collected and included modal, tencel, cotton, and rayon fabrics. The selection of fabrics was based on studies that reported fabrics with good tactile, absorbent, stretchable, and wrinkle resistance. Phantoms of five hospital gowns and four fabrics, arranged in overlapping layers from one to eight, were created and examined on a digital X-ray system in both Chest AP examination. The images examined were subjected to a first-step profile analysis, a second-step signal intensity averaging analysis, and a third-step microscopic analysis. The results showed that all nine materials had an increasing impact on the image as the number of layers of fabric increased, with the modal fabric having the least impact on the image in the first, second, and third analyses. In conclusion, as the resolution of digital x-ray systems increases, the impact of examination clothing on the image will increase, and research to find suitable materials for examination clothing will continue to be necessary.

  • This study is to suggest a method to evaluate the detector performance using change of absorbed dose and histogram according to sensitivity change of Auto Exposure Control(AEC). The experiment site is skull, abdomen pelvis and the accuracy of the detector was evaluated by measuring the absorbed dose of the detector sensitivity S200, S400, S800, S1000. Also the dynamic range of the detector was evaluated through the histogram analysis. As a result, the absorbed dose decreased gradually as the sensitivity was set higher from S200 to S1000. And through the sensitivity histogram analysis, as the sensitivity of the skull is set higher, the amount of information at both ends of the histogram is lost. Abdomen and pelvis areas showed underflow phenomena in which the amount of information in the first part of the histogram was lost as the sensitivity was set higher. In conclusion, the detector accurately implemented the sensitivity change, but the dynamic range of the image due to the sensitivity change of the AEC due to the deterioration of the detector performance can not be realized properly and it was found that the evaluation through the absorbed dose and the histogram is useful when evaluating the performance of the detector.

  • This study uses the 'S-align' function to present a reference value of the X-ray tube angle for the realization of an image similar to that of the chest PA image during chest AP radiography. This study targeted dummy phantom and used a 17"×17" DR image receptor. The irradiation conditions were 110 kVp, 160 mA, 50 ms, and the distance between the central X-ray and the image receptor was set to 180 cm and 110 cm, respectively. The end of the catheter was placed at the 11th thoracic height to indicate the nasogastric tube. In the case of lung apex length measurement, the mean value of measurement was 30.53±0.47 in PA. T 0°, TCA 5~25°, TCE 5~15° were 21.07±0.29, 27.60±0.21, 34.13±0.44, 39.86±0.31, 45.96±0.61 mm, 54.13±0.37 mm, 16.16±0.46 mm, 9.81±0.35 mm, 2.75±0.30 mm, respectively. For the depth of the catheter end, the average value measured at PA was 6.70±0.31 mm. T 0°, TCA 5~25°, TCE 5~15° were 15.72±0.38 mm, 24.10±0.50 mm, 29.24±0.86 mm, 34.35±0.35 mm, 41.06±1.08 mm, 48.07±0.38 mm, 12.85±0.25 mm, 7.92±0.36 mm, 3.01±0.39 mm, respectively. The length of the lung apex was similar to that of chest PA when the angle of incidence was adjusted from 5° to 10° in the leg direction, and the depth of the catheter tip was most similar when the X-ray tube angle was incident at 10° in the head direction. Therefore, To change the X-ray tube angle according to the purpose of the examination during the chest AP radiography using 'S-align' function is considered necessary.

  • Digital Radiography (DR) has rapidly developed in megavoltage X-ray imaging (MVI). Thus, a very simple and general quality assurance (QA) method is required. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the modulation transfer function (MTF), the noise power spectrum (NPS) and the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) for MVI using general QA method and computed radiography (CR) device. We used tungsten edge block with $19{\times}10{\times}1cm^3$ thickness and 6MV energy. For detector, CR-IP (image plate), CR-IP-lead, the CR-IP-back (lanex TM fast back screen), CR-IP-front (lanex TM fast front screen) were used and pre-sampling MTF was calculated. The MTF of CR-IP-front showed the highest value with 1.10 lp/mm although the CR-IP showed the only 0.70 lp/mm. The best NPS was observed in CR-IP front screen. According to the increase in spatial frequency, our results showed that DQE was approximately 1.0 cycles/mm. The present study demonstrates that the QA method with our home-made edge block can be used to evaluate MTF, NPS and DQE for MVI.

  • Obstacle detection is an important task for many mobile robot applications. The methods using stereo vision and optical flow are computationally expensive. Therefore, this paper presents a vision-based obstacle detection method using only two view images. The method uses a single passive camera and odometry, performs in real-time. The proposed method is an obstacle detection method using 3D reconstruction from taro views. Processing begins with feature extraction for each input image using Dr. Lowe's SIFT(Scale Invariant Feature Transform) and establish the correspondence of features across input images. Using extrinsic camera rotation and translation matrix which is provided by odometry, we could calculate the 3D position of these corresponding points by triangulation. The results of triangulation are partial 3D reconstruction for obstacles. The proposed method has been tested successfully on an indoor mobile robot and is able to detect obstacles at 75msec.

  • Single exposure dual X-ray imaging can be used to separate soft and dense-material images for medical and industrial applications. This study keep focusing baggage inspection system(BIS) specifically. New detector modules for single exposure dual X-ray imaging are consisted of low energy detector (LED) and high energy detector (HED). First, the optimized thickness of copper filter coupled HED to separate low energy and high energy was simulated by the given X-ray energy (140 kVp, 1 mA) using Monte Carlo simulation codes, MCNPX. So as a result of simulation, the copper filter thickness is 0.7 mm. For the design of PIN photodiode, ATLAS device simulation tool was used. 16 channels PIN photodiode of 1.5 mm ${\times}$ 3.2 mm for Dual X-ray imaging detector was fabricated in the process of ETRI. And its dark current and quantum efficiency, terminal capacitance were measured. It was proven that the Lanex Fast B coupled HED were a sufficient candidate to replace the CsI(Tl) commerced in dual X-ray system, since these give a strong signal, overcoming system noise. Finally dual X-ray image was acquired through correction of the LED X-ray Image and the HED X-ray Image.

  • Morphological information such as shape and margin of micro lesion is important information for diagnosis of disease in clinical imaging. In this study, we investigated the morphological changes of the micro lesions by comparing the contrast and area in grid suppressed DR images according to grid frequency. In the profile analysis of the image, the mass showed an average intensity variation of 8.6 ~ 72.4 after suppression, The higher the grid frequency, the more the contrast was increased. However, in the images obtained using 103 lp / inch, which is a grid frequency less than the sampling frequency, the contrast of the mass in the vertical direction decreased after suppression. In the binary image, the area change of the mass was also large. As a result, the shape, size, and margin of the mass changed. In the case of very small calcification, the higher the grid frequency is the larger the change in contrast, so that a clear image can be obtained in the post-suppression image. However, we could confirm that the margin of the lesion was blurred and the lesion was lost in some of the images using the 103 lp / inch grid. The higher the frequency of the grid, The change of the contrast of fiber occurred largely and clear boundary was confirmed. The decrease of the number of pixels was small and morphological change was small. In conclusion, when using a grid frequency that is not suitable for the sample frequency, morphological changes or lesion loss of micro lesions in the post- suppression image may give the possibility of misdiagnosis in diagnosis and differentiation of the image.
