  • In this paper, we propose the bus/bypass synchronization phase lock loop (B-Sync PLL) method using each phase voltage controller of a parallel UPS inverter. The B-Sync PLL included in each phase voltage control system of parallel UPS inverters has the transient response and the phase synchronization error at grid normal or blackout. The validity of this method is verified by simulation and experiment. As a result, the parallel UPS inverters using the proposed method confirmed that the output phase was continuously synchronized when a grid blackout, improving the transient response characteristics for stable load power supply and equal load sharing.

  • To analyze influences under faults caused by a stator winding short and to evaluate an effectiveness of a diagnostic algorithm a faulty model for an inverter-driven permanent magnet synchronous motor is presented. Even though the conventional dq motor model obtained through the transformation of phase voltage model is widely used to analyze and control the motor, it can not be used in the analysis of a faulty motor since the 3-phase balanced condition is no longer hold under the fault caused by a stator winding short, and thus, it is very difficult to obtain motor input voltages from the pole voltage of an inverter. To overcome this problem, a faulty model for an inverter-driven permanent magnet synchronous motor is proposed by considering the line voltage of 3-phase variables. The effectiveness of the proposed faulty model is verified through comparative simulations and experiments using DSP TMS320F28335 and motor built to allow a partial short of inter-turn.

  • To analyze influences under open faults in switching devices of the PWM inverter and under the isolation between the inverter and motor terminal, a faulty model for the inverter-driven permanent magnet synchronous motor is presented. Even though the conventional dq motor model obtained through the transformation of phase voltage model is widely used to analyze and control AC motor, it can not be used under open faults in switching devices since the 3-phase balanced condition is no longer hold under the open fault and it is not easy to obtain motor input voltages in open phase from the pole voltage. To deal with this problem, a faulty model for an inverter-driven permanent magnet synchronous motor is derived by using the line voltage of motor according to switch open, which can be effectively used for performance evaluation of the diagnostic algorithm. The validity of the proposed faulty model is verified through comparative simulations and experiments using DSP TMS320F28335.

  • This paper proposes a compensation algorithm for the analog rotor position errors caused by nonideal sinusoidal encoder output signals including offset and gain errors. In order to achieve a much higher resolution, position sensors such as resolvers or incremental encoders can be replaced by sinusoidal encoders. In practice, however, the periodic ripples related to the analog rotor position are generated by the offset and gain errors between the sine and cosine output signals of sinusoidal encoders. In this paper, the effects of offset and gain errors are easily analyzed by applying the concept of a rotating coordinate system based on the dq transformation method. The synchronous d-axis signal component is used directly to detect the amplitude of the offset and gain errors for the proposed compensator. As a result, the offset and gain errors can be well corrected by three integrators located on the synchronous d-axis component. In addition, the proposed algorithm does not require any additional hardware and can be easily implemented by a simple integral operation. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified through several experimental results.

  • This study proposes a control design for the grid output current and for reducing the neutral-point voltage oscillation through the small-signal modeling of the three-phase grid connected with a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter with LCL filter. The three-level NPC inverter presents an inherent problem: the neutral-point voltage fluctuation caused by the neutral-point current flowing in or out from the neutral point. The small signal modeling consists of averaging, dq0 transformation, perturbing, and linearizing steps performed on a three-phase grid connected to a three-level NPC inverter with LCL filter. The proposed method controls both the grid output and neutral-point currents at every switching period and reduces the neutral-point voltage oscillation. The validity of the proposed method is verified through simulation and experiment.

  • This paper proposes a wide air-gap control method for the multi-module permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (MM-PMLSM) based on independent vector control. In particular, the MM-PMLSM consists of symmetrical multi-module and multi-phase structures, which are basically three-phase configurations without a neutral point, unlike conventional three-phase machines. In addition, there are no additional magnetic levitation windings to control the normal force of the air-gap between each stator and mover. Hence, in this paper, a dq-axis current control applying a d-q transformation and an independent vector control are proposed for the air-gap control between the two symmetric stators and mover of the MM-PMLSM. The characteristics and control performance of the MM-PMLSM are analyzed under the concept of vector control. As a result, the proposed method is easily implemented without additional windings to control the air-gap and the mover position. The effectiveness of the proposed independent vector control algorithm is verified through experimental results.

  • This paper proposes a robust optimal nonlinear control with an observer to reject the offset errors of position tracking for surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors. We provide the control method to reject offset errors and load torque for designing field oriented control (FOC) based the alternating current (AC) frame. The proposed method consists of a torque generator, a commutation scheme, an electrical controller, and a load torque observer. The mechanical controller is designed to compensate for load torque and the offset error and generate the desired torque. The commutation scheme is proposed to create the desired currents for the desired torque. The electrical controller is developed to guarantee the desired currents. The observer is designed to estimate both the velocity and the load torque. In order to obtain the robustness to parameter uncertainties and a gain tuning guide, the linear quadratic regulator method is applied to the proposed method. The closed-loop stability is proven. A detailed process for the FOC design and an analysis of the control methods based on the AC frame are presented. The performance of the proposed method was validated via experiments. The proposed method obtains the FOC based on the AC frame. Furthermore, the position tracking performance of the proposed method is superior to that of the conventional method.

  • The conventional sliding mode control (CSMC) has a number of problems. It may cause dc output voltage ripple and it cannot guarantee the robustness of the whole system for a matrix rectifier (MR). Furthermore, the existence of a filter can decrease the input power factor (IPF). Therefore, a novel global sliding mode control (GSMC) based on a hyperbolic tangent function with IPF compensation for MRs is proposed in this paper. Firstly, due to the reachability and existence of the sliding mode, the condition of the matrix rectifier's robustness and chattering elimination is derived. Secondly, a global switching function is designed and the determination of the transient operation status is given. Then a SMC compensation strategy based on a DQ transformation model is applied to compensate the decreasing IPF. Finally, simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the correctness and effectiveness of the control algorithm. The obtained results show that compared with CSMC, applying the proposed GSMC based on a hyperbolic tangent function for matrix rectifiers can achieve a ripple-free output voltage with a unity IPF. In addition, the rectifier has an excellent robust performance at all times.

  • Nowadays, the PV systems have been focused on the interconnection between the power source and the grid. The PV inverter, either single-phase or three-phase, can be considered as the core of the whole system because of an important role in the grid-interconnecting operation. An important issue in the inverter control is the load current regulation. In the literature, the Proportional+Integral (PI) controller, normally used in the current-controlled Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), cannot be a satisfactory controller for an ac system because of the steady-sate error and the poor disturbance rejection, especially in high-frequency range. By comparison with the PI controller, the Proportional+Resonant (PR) controller can introduce an infinite gain at the fundamental ac frequency; hence can achieve the zero steady-state error without requiring the complex transformation and the dq-coupling technique. In this paper, a PR controller is designed and adopted for replacing the PI controller. Based on the theoretical analyses, the PR controller based control strategy is implemented in a 32-bit fixed-point TMS320F2812 DSP and evaluated in a 3kW experimental prototype Photovoltaic (PV) power conditioning system (PCS). Simulation and experimental results are shown to verify the performance of implemented control scheme in PV PCS.
