  • This paper investigates the steady state combustion characteristics of LPG homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) engine with variable valve timing(VVT) and dimethyl ether(DME) direct injection, to find out the benefits in exhaust gas emissions. VVT is one of the attractive ways to control HCCI engine. Hot internal residual gas which is controlled by VVT device, makes fuel is evaporated easily, and ignition timing is advanced. Regular gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas(LPG) were used as main fuel and dimethyl ether(DME) was used as ignition promoter in this research. Operating range and exhaust emissions were compared LPG HCCI engine with gasoline HCCI engine. Operating range of LPG HCCI engine was wider than that of gasoline HCCI engine. The start of combustion was affected by the intake valve open(IVO) timing and the ${\lambda}TOTAL$ due to the latent heat of vaporization, not like gasoline HCCI engine. At rich operation conditions, the burn duration of the LPG HCCI engine was longer than that of the gasoline HCCI engine. CAD at 20% and 90% of the mass fraction burned were also more retarded than that of the gasoline HCCI engine. And carbon dioxide(CO2) emission of LPG HCCI engine was lower than that of gasoline HCCI engine. However, carbon oxide(CO) and hydro carbon(HC) emission of LPG HCCI engine were higher than that of gasoline HCCI engine.

  • Variable valve timing is one of the attractive ways to control homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine. Hot internal residual gas which can be controlled by variable valve timing(VVT) device, makes fuel evaporated easily, and ignition timing advanced. Regular gasoline was used as main fuel and di-methyl ether(DME) was used as ignition promoter in this research. HCCI engine operating range is limited by high combustion peak pressure and engine noise. High combustion pressure can damage the engine during operation. To avoid engine damage, the rich limits have to define using various methods. Peak combustion pressure, rate of cylinder pressure rise was considered to determine rich limit of engine operating range. Knock probability was correlated with the rate of cylinder pressure rise as well as the peak combustion pressure.

  • The prediction of diesel spray penetration has been the subject of several works and intensive investigations are still underway by many researchers. It is required to summarize the correlations developed before 1990 days and to introduce the correlations reported recently in the literature. The existing zero-dimensional models for the prediction of diesel fuel spray penetration can be classified as theoretical and empirical correlations. Of various correlations, the models considered in this paper were selected as based on the evaluation results of previous reviews and the recently published works in the literature. The existing theoretical correlations can be classified into seven categories and the existing empirical ones as two categories in this review. According to the review of existing models, the dominating factors for the prediction of spray tip penetration are the spray angle, discharge coefficient, pressure drop across nozzle, ambient density and orifice diameter and time after the start of injection. Especially, the definition for the measurement of spray angle is different with researchers. It is required to evaluate the existing spray tip penetration models for the very high injection pressure and other fuel sprays such as DME. It is also required to evaluate the correlations for the prediction of diesel spray penetration with the connection of liquid-phase penetration.

  • The combustion and exhaust emissions characteristics of a liquefied petroleum gas-di-methyl ether compression ignition engine with a variable valve timing device were investigated under various liquefied petroleum gas injection timing conditions. Liquefied petroleum gas was used as the main fuel and was injected directly into the combustion chamber. Di-methyl ether was used as an ignition promoter and was injected into the intake port. Different liquefied petroleum gas injection timings were tested to verify the effects of the mixture homogeneity on the combustion and exhaust emission characteristics of the liquefied petroleum gas-di-methyl ether compression ignition engine. The average charge temperature was calculated to analyze the emission formation. The ringing intensity was used for analysis of knock characteristics. The combustion and exhaust emission characteristics differed significantly depending on the liquefied petroleum gas injection and intake valve open timings. The CO emission increased as the intake valve open and liquefied petroleum gas injection timings were retarded. However, the particulate matter emission decreased and the nitrogen oxide emission increased as the intake valve open timing was retarded in the diffusion combustion regime. Finally, the combustion efficiency decreased as the intake valve open and liquefied petroleum gas injection timings were retarded.

  • Hydrocarbon is required to be converted to pure hydrogen without carbon monooxide (CO) for polymer exchange membran fuel cell (PEMFC) applications. In this paper, CO cleaning processes as the downstream of Dimethyl ehter (DME) autothermal reforming process were performed in micro-reactors. Our study suggested two kinds of water gas shift (WGS) reaction process: High Temperature shift (HTS) - Low Temperature shift (LTS), Middle temperature shift (MTS). Firstly, using perovskite catalyst for MTS was decreased effieiciency since methanation. Using HTS-LTS the CO concentration was decreased about 2% ($N_2$ & $H_2O$ free) with the reaction temperature of $420^{\circ}C$ and $235^{\circ}C$ for HTS and LTS, respectively. As the final stage of CO cleaning process, preferential oxidation (PROX) was applied. The amount of additional oxygen need 2 times of stoichiometric at $65^{\circ}C$. The total conversion reforming efficiency of 75% was gained.

  • Dimethyl ether (DME) is an attractive fuel as a hydrogen carrier for mobile PEMFC applications. However, its reforming technologies are rarely studied especially by using autothermal reforming (ATR) method. This work explored the impact of operating conditions to the performance of DME ATR. Temperature, Steam to carbon ratio(SCR), Oxygen to carbon ratio(OCR) and Gas hourly space velocity(GHSV) were considered as the operating conditions. As results, conversion efficiency was increased as the temperature increased, but saturated around $700^{\circ}C$. There was no significant effect of SCR on conversion efficiency, but high SCR led reactions in endothermic manner. High OCR substantially suppressed conversion efficiency, but it helped to sustain the temperature by stimulating exothermic reactions. Conversion efficiency was decreased as GHSV increased. The optimized operating conditions was suggested: $700^{\circ}C$, SCR of 1.5, OCR of 0.45 and GHSV below 15000/h and conversion efficiency was ~85% at the conditions.

  • The introduction of mixture heterogeneity has been considered to be one of the ways to avoid knocking, as it reduces the pressure rise rate in HCCI Combustion. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of heterogeneity, in particular thermal stratification and fuel strength stratification, on HCCI Combustion fueled with DME and n-Butane. Thermal stratification is formed in the Combustion Chamber of a Rapid Compression Machine with three kinds of pre-mixture, each with different properties. The stratified charge mixture was adiabatically compressed, throughout which cylinder gas pressure and two-dimensional chemiluminescence images were measured and analyzed.

  • For practical application on the HCCI engine, the solution of subjects, such as control of auto-ignition timing and avoidance of knocking, is indispensable. This study focused on the technique of controlling HCCI combustion appropriately, changing the mixture ratio of two kinds of fuel. Methane and DME/n-Butane were selected as fuels. The influences, which the mixing ratio of two fuels does to ignition timing, ignition temperature, rate of heat release and oxidation reaction process, were investigated by experiment with 4-stroke HCCI engine and numerical calculation with elementary reactions.

  • Hydrogen is an alternative fuel for the future energy which can reduce pollutants and greenhouse gases. Synthesis gas have played an important role of synthesizing the valuable chemical compound, for example methanol, DME and GTL chemicals. Renewable biomass feedstocks can be potentially used for fuels and chemical production. Current thermal processing techniques such as fast pyrolysis, slow pyrolysis, and gasification tend to generate products with a large slate of compounds. Lignocellulose feedstocks such as forest residues are promising for the production of bio-oil and synthesis gas. Pyrolysis and gasification was investigated using thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and bubbling fluidized bed gasification reactor to utilize forest woody biomass. Most of the materials decomposed between $320^{\circ}C$ and $380^{\circ}C$ at heating rates of $5{\sim}20^{\circ}C/min$ in thermogravimetric analysis. Bubbling fluidized bed reactor were use to study gasification characteristics, and the effects of reaction temperature, residence time and feedstocks on gas yields and selectivities were investigated. With increasing temperature from $750^{\circ}C$ to $850^{\circ}C$, the yield of char decreased, whereas the yield of gas increased. The gaseous products consisted of mostly CO, CO2, H2 and a small fraction of C1-C4 hydrocarbons.

  • The numerical analysis of the reduction of reaction mechanism for the ignition of dimethyl ether (DME) was performed. On the basis of a detailed reaction mechanism involving 79 species and 351 reactions, the peak molar concentration and sensitivity analysis were conducted in a homogeneous reactor model. The reduced reaction mechanism involving 44 species and 166 reactions at the threshold value $7.5{\times}10^{-5}$ of the molar peak concentration was established by comparing the ignition delays the reduced mechanism with those the detailed mechanism. The predicted results of the reduced mechanism applied to the single-zone homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine model were in agreement with those of the detailed mechanism. Therefore, this reduced mechanism can be used to accurately simulate the ignition and combustion process of compression ignition engine using DME fuel.
