  • The electrochemical behaviors of various metals with and without diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coating in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution were investigated. The effect of hydrodynamic conditions was focused by employing a rotating disc electrode (RDE). The experimental results showed that each bare metal had a more positive corrosion potential and a higher corrosion rate due to enhanced oxygen transport at the higher rotating speed of the RDE. DLC coating caused a substantial increase in the corrosion resistance of all metals studied. However, localized corrosion was still found in the DLC-coated metal at sites where deposition defects existed. Surface morphology examination was performed after the electrochemical test to confirm the roles of hydrodynamic conditions and DLC coating.

  • Diamond like carbon(DLC) thin films possesed not only marvelous material characteristics such as large thermal conductivity, high hardness and being chemically inert, but also possesed negative electron affinity (NEA) properties. The NEA is an extremely desirable property of the material used in microelestronics and vacuum microelestronics device. DLC films were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition(PLD). Theeffect of the laser energy density and the substrate temperature on the properies of DLC films was investigated. The experiment was accomplished at temperatures in the range of room temperature to $600^{\circ}C$. The laser energy density was in the range of 6 $J/cm^2$ to 16 $J/cm^2$.

  • DLC(Diamond-Like Carbon) films were prepared by Inductively Coupled Plasma(ICP) CVD system. It was confirmed that the field emission characteristics are closely related to the richness of C-H bonding incorporated in the DLC. According to Fowler-Nordheim equation, it is thought that the ability of DLC to emit electron at relatively low voltage is due to the field enhancement caused by the nodules of ${\sim}100nm$ size on the surface of DLC. The electric field to start field emission was about $1.4{\times}10^9V/m$ in case of DLC film deposited at input power of 400W and substrate bias of -100V.

  • Transparent diamond-like carbon (DLC) films were synthesized on glass using radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition method from the gas mixture of $CH_4$, $SiH_4$ and Ar. The pressure, the rf-power, $CH_4/SiH_4/Ar$ ratio, and the deposition time were 0.1Torr, 100W, 20 : 1 : 1, and 20 min, respectively. The optical transmittances of DLC-deposited glass and uncoated glass were compared with each other in the visible light regions. The DLC-deposited glass showed transmittance of approximately 83 % and 95 % as compared to the uncoated glass for the wavelength of 380 nm and 500 nm, respectively. The hardness and roughness of DLC-coated glass have been measured by nanoindentation and AFM, respectively. The DLC-coated glass showed a little less or similar optical transmittance compared to the uncoated glass, while the hardness of DLC-coated glass was 2.5 times higher than that of the uncoated glass. The deposited DLC film had the very smooth surface and was thicker than 150 nm after deposition for 20 min.

  • Dimond-like carbon(DLC) films have been deposited by using both rf plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) deposition systems. Effects of deposition conditions, such as dc self-bias, $CH_4$ gas pressure, substrate bias, and $N_2$ partial pressure, on the structural and electrical properties of DLC films are examined. The experimental results obtained have also been discussed by considering a theoretical model for film growth.

  • DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) DLC박막의 구조는 Raman Spectra을 통해, Sp3 (like diamond) peak와 Sp2 (like graphite) peak의 혼재 여부를 분석하였고, FE-SEM을 이용하여 막의 표면 및 단면을 관찰하였다.

  • This paper reports an investigation on nanotribological properties of silicon nanochannels coated by a diamond-like carbon (DLC) film. The nanochannels were fabricated on Si (100) wafers by using photolithography and reactive ion etching (RIE) techniques. The channeled surfaces (Si channels) were then further modified by coating thin DLC film. Water contact angle of the modified and unmodified Si surfaces was examined by an anglemeter using the sessile-drop method. Nanotribological properties, namely friction and adhesion forces, of the Si channels coated with DLC (DLC-coated Si channels) were investigated in comparison with those of the flat Si, DLC-coated flat Si (flat DLC), and Si channels, using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Results showed that the DLC-coated Si channels greatly increased hydrophobicity of silicon surfaces. The DLC coating and Si channels themselves individually reduced adhesion and friction forces of the flat Si. Further, the DLC-coated Si channels exhibited the lowest values of these forces, owing to the combined effect of reduced contact area through the channeling and low surface energy of the DLC. This combined modification could prove a promising method for tribological applications at small scales.

  • A diamond-like carbon (DLC) film was produced on a TiO2 substrate using a plasma enhance chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) method. The CH4-H2 plasma was produced by applying 400 V DC. The DLC film with the best crystalline structure was obtained when the concentration of CH4 in H2 was 0.75 percent by volume and total pressure was 40 torr. The presence of the diamond structure was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy methods. It was found that the diluting gas H2 played an important role in producing a DLC film using a PECVD method.

  • Diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coatings could be good candidates as solid lubricants for cutting tools in dry machining of aluminum alloy. In this work, DLC thin films were produced as a friction reduction coating for WC-Co insert tip using the plasma immersion ion beam deposition (PIIED) technique. DLC coatings were also coated on $Al_2O_3$ specimens and high temperature wear tested up to $400^{\circ}C$ in dry air to observe the survivability of the DLC coating in simulated severe cutting conditions using a pin-on-disc tribotester with Hertzian contact stress of 1.3GPa. It showed reduced friction coefficients of minimum 0.02 up to $400^{\circ}C$. And cutting performance of DLC coated WC-Co insert tips to Al 6061 alloy were conducted in a high speed machining center. The main problems of built-up edge formation in aluminum machining are drastically reduced with improved surface roughness. The improvements were mainly related to the low friction coefficient of DLC to Al alloy and the anti-adhesion of Al alloy to WE due to the inertness of DLC.
