  • Dynamic Driving Carbon Nanotube Backlight Units (CNT-BLUs) can well utilize the persistence of their phosphor. This paper studies several dynamic driving schemes for the CNT-BLU developed by DTC/ITRI. Their illuminating efficiencies are experimentally evaluated. From these evaluations, this paper develops a new driving approach and even better efficiencies are obtained.

  • Universal Display Corporation (UDC), together with its University partners at Princeton University and the University of Southern California, are developing high-efficiency electrophosphorescent OLED devices, based on triplet emission. Recent results show both excellent device efficiencies and good lifetimes for the commercialization of low power consumption, full-color, passive and activematrix OLED displays. We also show that phosphorescent devices may be driven by low cost amorphous silicon backplanes, and discuss the benefits of using our proprietary top emission OLED device architecture.

  • This paper proposes a transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) in a whole-pixel switchable configuration with a high aperture ratio using an electrophoretic particle layer (EPL). The switchable transflective LCD consisted of the liquid crystal layer as a display unit, and the EPL as a switchable mirror. The switching of the EPL between the mirror for the reflective mode and the transparency for the transmissive mode was performed by controlling electrophoretic nanoparticles with an applied voltage in a three-electrode structure. The single pixel was used as the whole transmissive or reflective mode that corresponded to the switchable EPL mirror. Thus, a transflective LCD with a high aperture ratio was obtained.

  • In this paper, a new precharging method without any side effects is proposed to overcome image degradation caused by insufficient charging times. This work explains why the precharging method can compensate for short charging times. However, side effects of the precharging method in the form of horizontal line artifacts are addressed, wherein line artifact-compensating precharging (LCP) is presented to mitigate the side effects. Behavioral modeling is employed to investigate the side effects by estimating transient responses of a liquid crystal display. The LCP proves that it can dramatically reduce line artifacts caused by precharging because the brightness difference of adjacent pixels does not exceed 1.0.

  • DC influence between pixel electrode and alignment layer (AL) in in-plane switching mode LCD was analyzed through DC equivalence-circuit equation induction, DC charge-discharge simulation, luminance and residual-DC measurement systems using test patterned (TP) cell. DC discharging rate (DDR) of single layer electrode was faster than that of double layer electrode and DDR of low resistance AL was faster than that of high resistance AL. DC discharging characteristics had a close relation to layer number and resistance between two electrodes.

  • Amorphous silicon nitride (a-SiNx) passivation film as a passivation layer of TFT-LCDs was deposited by AC-reactive sputtering at low temperature. As a result, the electrical characteristics and reliability of TFT with novel passivation showed the same level as the conventional TFT. Finally, we have developed 47"Full HD IPS TFT-LCDs with sputtered amorphous silicon nitride. It is suitable for low temperature based applications such as OTFT and Flexible display.

  • We have developed a novel driving method, Six times Rate Driving(SRD) for the purpose of making cost competitive TFT-LCD. By applying SRD method to an a-Si TFT-LCD, the driving rate was increased six times as it was named but the number of data lines and so its D-Ics were reduced to one sixth of the conventional one which resulted in the cost saving of that much. We also newly designed the gate driver in order to avoid any expansion of the bezel width caused by applying SRD. Our newly developed driving technology, SRD was successfully applied to 7.0-inch WSVGA (1024 ${\times}$ 600) TFT-LCD which can be driven with only one data D-IC and here introduced.

  • We propose a low cost, high performance, effective overdrive implementation method for liquid crystal display systems. The technique can calculate all overdrive values using higher order approximation algorithm by only three measurements. We find that our technique can be applied regardless of LCD panels. Due to its simplicity, we can also tune motion performance of the LCD systems without measurements.

  • Writable Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Display and the algorithm used to detect its image were developed. We could use any hard tip, ex: the tip of a forefinger, to directly write an image on the surface of Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Display (CHLCD). By measuring the capacitance of one pixel of test cell (12mm x 15mm/1x1), F-state or P-state could be detected. By measuring the capacitance of one pixel of 4.1" CHLCD (241um x 241um/ 320x320), F-state or Pstate could not be detected, due to the effect of parasitic capacitance. Therefore, high frequency measurement and the algorithm were developed to detect the image on CHLCD.
